2:02 is hilarious and also makes me wish the song was on YHF. It would have fit so well and I'm so sad it hasn't been put on an album. RIP Jay, what a great duet with Jeff.
It's in the engineer demos -- I don't remember where I found them but on a slightly more useless note, I burned them to a disc called "Yankee Hotel Heaven"
RIP indeed, but to be honest, he was a dick to everyone in Wilco. If you watch the documentary they explain what happens. he tried to say that Jeff was taking over the band, but actually it was the opposite.
this is pretty false, I did a tour with them in 2000 and it wasnt in Jays bones to control anyone. Jay was the rock and a fair amount of the song smithing in wilco. look at , listen to all the albums since, craftsmanship is superb but they are boring and musically weak in comparison.
The shows are worse now two with Kenny and Jay gone. the players are stiff. all good, but the chemistry is STIFF..
@inclinedplanes i find that hard to believe considering the documentary about the band said this..
but i disagree with you're opinion on their music and show quality - sure AM and YHF are classics but I think that some songs from the new albums are as good if not better than some from AM/YHF..
and as far as the live shows go, i don't think they are "stiff" at all.. Nels Cline jumps all over the stage and Glenn Kotche does a great job putting on a show as far as drumming goes..
@sGCoreasheS I wouldn't take the docu' as gospel, particularly since Jeff stated later that the "differences" between them were not as deep as the docu' leads you to believe. Jeff said that Sam Jones was really lopsided in that portryal, which was is unfortunate. Again, my comment about Jones showing Jay playing a solo show to an empty bar is dickheaded; I feel he made Jay look like a stooge, when really he's a demi-god in my eyes. Have you ever heard Titanic Love Affair? The man was amazing.
@inclinedplanes Couldn't agree more! I met Jay many times back in my St. Louis days hob-nobbing and playing with some of the "Champaign pop-mafia" guys like Erik Voeks, Steve Scariano, Adam Schmitt, Nick Rudd, Pat Hawley; all guys who played with and knew Jay very well. He always just happy to play, never controlling. I feel like that was an asinine storyline concocted by the director of "IATTBYH". I really hate the scene after he gets canned and they show him playing to an empty house.
@inclinedplanes ...I am the first-mate with you on the Coomer/Bennett ship! I don't Kotche's playing...no balls. I stopped buying the records after "Ghost", which I listened to about three times before tossing to the bottom of the barrel. It's cool that Tweedy and the band as a whole grew so much artistically from an alt-country band, and I'm not annoyed by the people who are so nutty about them now, I just liked the "Summerteeth" ratio of "rock" : "art-rock". That was the band's zenith!
@cogscretin Hmm..some interesting points. But I can tell you from a drummer perspective(being Iam one)...Wilco ended up SOARING musically/rhytmically...with the switch from Coomer to Kotche. I pretty much dig all of the albums from AM to present. But when i listen to the earlier albums..as a drummer...powerful as Coomer is...his playing is very boring and unimaginative. Jeff wanted to push further..and Kotche PERFECTLY became the foil for this. Ken was good..but they needed Kotche to continue.
@Philmod68 If you look at some of my own vids you'll see I've got a little perspective myself ;)
Sound is awful but you can pick out a bit and judge my technique; just dickin' around, trying to get my chops back; I hadn't played since Woodstick '09. It's true Ken wouldn't fit in nowadays. I'll cop to some nostalgia; I lived in St. Lou' in the Uncle Tupelo days & saw Wilco's 1st show—Henneman from the Bottlerockets played guitar then (a damn tasty picker).
Oh God, the look Jay gives Jeff at 0.32-33 - how precious is that? They were two such great talents, and made such magic together, and maybe there wasn't room for two such egoes in the band, but I think there was a lot of affection between them, you can see this in the film. The music is a beautiful legacy. RIP Jay, and Rock On Jeff :)
@Jojoseahorse It's just unfortunate that Jay had to force himself out of the band. If I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is any indication of his attitude in the band, it's no wonder he got the boot-- although Wilco has never been the same since.
This has always been and always be my favorite Wilco clip. Thank god for that Engineer's Demo bootleg that we finally got to hear the full version of this mix.
Jay was integral to the band, especially on Summerteeth. That, to me, was his baby, and it's also my favorite Wilco album. But let's not use Jay's death as an excuse to bash Jeff. He's been carrying this band for 15 years now and has yet to run out of good songs, and their live shows are better than they ever were.
Poor Jay :(. Sometimes I think Tweedy lets his ego get in the way but who knows. I don't think he made Uncle Tupelo any better they would have been fine without him but at least we got Sun Volt and Wilco!
I love 00.31 of this, I think that must have been Jay's lyric and Jeff realized it was a good one so he included it...also I think this song was left off YHF as a slight to Jay because he did in fact co-write the lyrics...I'm a big fan of Jay's music, he and Jeff were great together, YHF was Wilco's peak IMO and there's been a steady decline ever since, AGIB is a really good record the last two, not so much...
agreed, i think this was left off of YHF because of jay's part in it, though it would have fit in nicely. i think a ghost is born was weak compared to sky blue sky, though. regardless, YHF trumps all
Jay is talented but by all accounts a total prick to Tweedy. There are more talented people than talented pricks in this crazy world, so why put up with the crap?

bennett was probably right about what he said. however, no one really knows what went down when the camera was off... etc. but from what i did see jay was kind of a prick-- so i could see where theyd get fed up with him; still, he was apart of wilco's best work and did a lot of the weird quirky stuff they have lacked in their past 2 albums.
