Great lesson. Obviously the main point of evolving licks was important, but what I liked most is when you explained _what is most likely happening_ when you see a guitarist "randomly shred" up and down. That was good guidance.
re-purposing riffs is only a small part of improvisation. Also being able to see where you are in a song and playing notes that harmonize, that say something on the fly is a big part too
@EmmanuelTromboner it helps more at first to work out what key the progression is in rather than thinking in terms of individual chords. at a more advanced level obviously you'll want to follow the chords, which will essentially mean playing arpeggios, with optional passing notes being taken from the pentatonic scale, or the relevant mode.
if you don't know what key the progression is in, a good rule is to take the first chord - if it's major, use that major scale, if minor, minor
@spankyxc0re because the essence of that "guitar solo" sound is heavily derived from pentatonics. The freaking guitar is designed to make "improvisational" scales easy
@spankyxc0re cause they're the most-used, the easiest to learn all over the neck, and sound the coolest. It's a beginner scale really. Learning something like the Cm scale over the entire neck is a lot more complicated.
@avielp improvising is all about theory. you need to know your scales, scale shapes and be able to use them in different keys in order to improvise ;)
@avielp The trick is to use theory for everything, but you have to use it mixed with your technique either, like what arpeggios to play and stuff like that
@avielp dahl didn't post the video, but i use my music theory all the time its really essential :), especially in soloing & improvisation (you can also learn all the scales by hard (not recomennded btw))
parkers are incredible. im adding one to my live rig. it will be accompanied by a les paul custom shop and an ibanez prestige. u dont know tone till uv played a parker.
i think one of the main things i mess up on is my keys....i try to improvise by staying within the same scale by going in a higher key,so basically this video helped me out alot...
can anybody help me..... when i'm doing solo, some strings are ringing which aren't suppose to. Specially right after i play one, it still rings. kinda makes an annoying sound.......HEEEELLPPP!!!!!!
what i do, sounds wierd and like it shouldnt work..i play a solo piece, whilst laying my pick hand over the strings at the bridge, as if you were palmmuting chords.continue playing the solo but keep as much of your hand down as possible. works fine for me to stop strings ringing out.and doesnt make your wrist ache.could be my own intuitive way of playing though. youve just gotta practise as much as you can and youll find a way that works for you.
k. over the bridge. i had the idea of muting it with me picking hand but I unintentionally mute the strings i'm playing. argggghhh. But gotcha man, just practice, practice, practice..... thanks much!!!^^
;) Anyway this is improvising it's jsut licks, but that doesn't make it bad. :)

It is easy to improvise alone, but if you have a backing track it is hard to "follow the chords", how to practice on that? Arpeggios?
Matheus222 1 year ago 2

Hey Kris!
Thanks for the lesson!
I have question: Do you know a lot of music theory? how often do you use it? do you use it while improvising/writing and other things?

if its electric guitar then it could be that the action is too low, the strings are old and suck already, or the fretwire is uneven. just a guess
