FWW remains the best food org, by far. The "choir" almost always fails to understand how farmers get less with subsidies. TheBartman47is all wrong. Commodity crops lack price responsiveness on both supply and demand sides (Daryll E. Ray) so government must manage markets as 1942-1952 (no subsidies). Free markets since 1996 failed. FWW is wrong here: 1950s-70s farmers got reduced prices with no subsidies until 61, and subsidies gave only 1/7 of price reductions. Consumers got $1 trill fr farms.
They forgot contestant #4. The 3rd world citizen who no longer have domestic farmers as they were all bullied out of the market by bulk food stuffs imported from the states UNDER cost. (There's a longer story to this but essentially US and EU agribusiness are directly responsible for a very large proportion of global poverty.)
The government is subsidizing the farmers with taxpayers money, but the benefit is not to the farmers who work harder to earn less, but to the corporate fat cats who manufacture these cheap processed foods. In essence, the taxpayers money might as well be going DIRECTLY to the corporations! Why does the government support this? Well, because these corporations help fund their party campaigns to get them re-elected! The taxpayer (voter) is the biggest loser at the end of the day.
The gov't is supposed to level the playing field if they would enforce the sherman anti-trust act we wouldn't have consolidation and monopolies - and why aren't corporations responsible for their pollution - it should be factored into their bottom line and net worth reported to the stock exchange - the system's rigged - the guy with the gold makes the rules
I agree that the absence of government will create a balanced market, but since the scales are tipped SO far in the 'fat cat's' favor, we need the government to come in, put everything in balance, THEN step out. The government is here to perpetuate justice within our country, and protect our rights and that's it. I think it's time they did their job.
Not mentioned is GE or GMO and ownership of life as Monsanto patents corn, soy and other seed. Meanwhile, we the consumers aren't allowed GMO labeling of the "patented" organism that is now in our foods. FDA testing? naw, the corporations did their own and have assured us THEIR creation is just fine.
shefbill, you don't have to worry about having your gun taken away. The Big gun lobby in Washington will never let that happen.
gguinges, I may have insinuated that capitalism is evil, it certainly can be but I never suggested that socialism or communism is kind. When it comes down to it I think we all want basically the same thing to be in control of our lives, families and communities and not be taken over by Big government nor Big business. Corporate farming is not the friend of the small
@jazlabaw No Jaz, this video wants more BIG gov to protect us from the BIG fat cats. The big gov has done enough already to ruin the free market. Look up CRP. The FDA shuts down the small timers from selling cheese, milk, eggs, etc, self-perpetuating their jobs. End the FED, don't make it bigger! It will just favor more big corps. That's all BIG Gov does! We need more choices, more freedoms NOT more laws and regs. Education, information, news, emails, etc, are the best way! CHOOSE 4 yrslf
@ShefBill you may indeed be accurate. However I am not picking up that this video is supporting Big Gov or not. Putting that argument aside, it is clear American people are obese because of bad high fructose diets. Agri-business has minimized the small farm and filled our fields of amber with fields of corn all for the processed food industry. Which is it Big government, Big business, or both that are bringing this country into the brink of a depression? In the meantime I will read about CRP.
Those big meany businessmen made us eat all those calories of highly processed foods. We need the super big government to make them go away and distribute our food equally to us because we are too stupid and weak to do it ourselves! In fact, we need the super big gov to tell us how to wipe our butts, when to sleep, how much to work, how much to rest, where to build, what to build, not to have guns, etc. We are not free anymore because of all our needs!
I appreciate this video recognises there is a problem, but the solution is NOT more government. The only real solution is for government to get out of the way and stop subsidizing the corporate fat cat, and then the small farmer will naturally have a competitive edge without any government meddling.
@TheBartman47 "The small farmer will naturally have a competitive edge" ???? Against Monsanto? Against Agri-giants who can fix prices on a whim? Against a unstable Eco-system growing more-so by the day? Really? What world are you living on?
@CrossSIdeTop Apparently either you didn't read my entire post, or you are ignorant of government involvement in agribusiness. Government PAYS the agri-giants with subsidies! And if truth in advertisement would prevail, Monsanto would have to truthfuly label their products as genetically modified, and NO ONE is going to want to eat that. They would go bankrupt without government manipulation.
@TheBartman47 I know that the government subsidizes agribusiness. Do you honestly think that Monsanto and the like wouldn't be able to ride it out if those subsidies stopped? I'm the one with the simplistic view of government-corporate collusion? To imagine that Monsanto would crumble without subsides is beyond un-realistic. Subsides disappear =/= seed prices rise =/= everyone pays the price =/= Monsantos bottom line takes a shallow dip.
@CrossSIdeTop You miss the point. No one in their right mind wants GMO seeds. Monsanto has admitted it themselves that if food companies were required to label their products that contain GMO ingredients, it would be like putting a skull and crossbones on the package! It's a LOT more than simply the subsidies, it's the government protecting Monsanto from truth in advertising. In other words, government protected fraud.
@CrossSIdeTop Also, your understanding of economics is flawed. Everyone is already paying higher prices BECAUSE of subsidies. Where do you think government money comes from? TAXES, that's where. So, your choice is either pay higher seed prices, or choose lower seed prices and pay more in taxes to fund the subsidies, PLUS a little extra to pay for the buearocracy departments to handle the money exchange. ALL subsidies costs everyone more than what it would if simply left alone!
I am sure this video will be just preaching to the choir. Believe me, I am part of that choir. However, it is not just the corporate fat cat who wins but the stock holders too, some of whom probably don't even know when they own stocks in big agri-business something usually only their broker knows and follows. Some of us are woven more into the fabric of capitalism than we care to know.

It is the absence of government and the free market that brings prices down and creates a balance in supply and demand.

As I was saying, corporate farming is not the friend of the small family farm. Are your eggs and milk local? Do you care?
