  • "higher standards"? This lady obviously has no clue what it takes to make a play. When I was in high school, the only thing they didn't do was go on stage naked, everything else was up for grabs.

  • It's a play, it's called acting.

  • I know this was a while ago, but I still tell this story everywhere I go, your guys' fight makes me proud to be from La Grande!

  • THEY THINK THIS IS BAD! MY HIGH SCHOOL DID RENT AND IT WAS AMAZING, I DID BACKSTAGE FOR IT! WE SOLD OUT OUR 1500 PERSON THEATRE ON 2/4 OF THE PERFORMANCES AND IT WAS NEARLY FULL THE OTHER NIGHTS!!

  • ha ha ha, this is AMAZING!!!! ha ha ha, Mr. Cahil ROCKS!!!!!! I go to La Grande High School for anybody that thinks that this video is awesome, and I'm part of the music programs, and have played in the Pit orchestra.

  • I looked it up. It was actually written by THE Steve Martin! That just makes the play awesome right there.

  • Kids can do a play and not have to worry about "compromisable standards" I think you're all reading too far into shit.

  • i hate standards

  • Uh yeah I don't really want to be washed in the blood of anything

  • no, I don't speak to imaginary characters. Do you?

  • wtf?

  • haha that stupid bitch jackman is so fucking stupid!!! at 1:54 she says she is sorry that we wont be able to see our work!! dumb cunt bag whore. lol Fun show love ya richie -Jefffrey- Freddy_

  • fuck that bitch! she's a total dumb bitch

  • !) those kids are fucking each other, masturbating, drinking and possibly smoking pot.

    2) Repression leads to psychological problems.

    3) One lady who's afraid of the word "sex" has the power to ruin the work of 50 people involved and 300 people who would come see it? I am ashamed.

  • I graduated from LHS a few years back, and am on the one hand ashamed that this has gotten so much attention, because it should never have been banned, and on the other hand proud that such an effort has been made to bring attention to it. Congratulations to everyone that's helped bring attention to this, and get it put on. My education from LHS was well above average, and skilled teachers like Mr. Cahill and so many others deserve better than petty obstruction of their excellent work.

  • lol thats so dumb.

but hey. props for standing up for what you believe in!

ps april curits is bomb! ;) amazing teacher.

  • Congratulations to everyone who DOESN'T want this play to go on! Really, thank you for getting it cancelled! When you told us that we couldn't do the show at the high school, then told us we had to give our scripts back, and then said that nothing that we were working on before could be used, YOU WERE HELPING US! Now we have a way cooler stage to preform on, Way better costumes, props, and set, and twice as big of a budget! So congrats! canceling the play was the best thing you could have done!!

  • You are correct. Like a quick twist of natural justice, this play will now be bigger and better than ever, and MORE children will be exposed to its evil because of Mrs. Jackman. She does deserve ironic thanks for that. But the thanks are very ironic, because people like her, if they had their way on everything, would create a slave state and a prison planet.

The human desire to dominate others when no domination is needed, though common, is psychopathic. In every issue there is.

  • That busybody authoritarian control-freak piece of dirt, Melissa K. Jackman (whose name was repeatedly in the news for her successful efforts at having this play banned at the High School in question) should be ashamed of her miserable pathetic worthless self.

The world is full of busybody control freaks like Mrs. Jackman, and it's because of people like them, that the world isn't as happy and logical and peaceful as it could be. She has fake spirituality and is nothing but pure ego.

  • If happy, logical and especially "peaceful" are your goals for society, I would suggest not spreading hateful attitudes like "busybody authoritarian control-freak piece of dirt" and "her miserable pathetic worthless self". You are contributing to the very thing you say you want to abolish. You have every right to disagree with her but a school is not a public forum, and free speech can be limited by federal law. We all have the right to disagree, but spreading hate is not the way to do it.

  • Hey, if the shoe fits, then so be it.

I'm only identifying a predator with strong verbal language. I have made no attempts at force whatsoever. Melissa Jackman, however, is choosing to use force on others. Whether she uses a shotgun, or uses the force of law, or the force of bureaucracy, it does not remove the fact that she is trying to control other people....who have never hurt, and never would hurt her. People like Mrs Jackman are the cause of almost every pathology of society.

  • one: She's mormon!, Two: everybody is getting all pissed off about this being a very conservative town, an saying that thats the reason the school board wont allow this play to go on. But what people are forgetting is that there is a big difference between religious conservative and political conservative! P.S. no where in the dictionary with you find the word, "compromisible" lady!

  • Sounds like a good opportunity to discuss with these "children" what those compromising standards are that you pointed out. If you are so concerned about compromising standards, TALK to them and you'll find they already know that it's a play and not real life. Don't just try to block them from it.

"and these children that you spit on as they try to change their world, are immune to you consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going through." -David Bowie

  • CONGRATULATIONS on getting support from the playwright himself. I do hope you'll post a follow-up video report after the production goes up...! May you all break legs and open minds.

  • Yeah I'm hoping to do another one after we preform. Although it may be hard to get good video from Picasso's point of view haha.

  • there is a follow up story of the cast trying to change the decision on the play, it is called Board Meeting on Play Cancelation in Eastern Oregon School. The production is coming up soon. Hopefully we can cover the amazing turnout, because everyone knows there will be.

  • There are so many mixed messages here. Why do they allow the Miss LHS pageant which advocates cross-dressing and the lampooning of women's bodies?

  • is there such a word as compromisable (Ms. Jackman.) I don't think so. Get a dictionary to check that one. Oops! That has some really dirty words in it.

  • What a busy body this broad is.

If you don't want your kids involed thats fine, but screw everyone else?

I'M SOOO SICK OF CHRISTIAN WACKOS!

  • "We are not children. We can think for ourselves!" Exactly. This 53-year-old teacher applauds these students, their director, and Steve Martin. Neither art, nor critical thinking should be banned in high schools. It is the woman and her crew who are trying to ban this who need to grow up.

  • Right on!

  • Wow, this video is amazing! All of you cast members, teachers and supporters are tremendous.

I'm blogging about this now and will grab the video. I ran into the story when I saw that Steve Martin has stepped forward to offer financial backing when the show goes on at Eastern Oregon University. That "concerned parent" should mind her own business and her own "kids." You young adults are an inspiration. In the future you must try to stay in LaGrande and change attitudes for the better.

  • Thank you!

  • WOW that lady is a DOUCHE!

  • I am very proud of these students and Mr. Cahill. As a former LHS student, I stand behind them 100%. This made me reminiscent of old times in Cahill's French class. :-)

  • I've been a part of a production of this play at my uni... and there's nothing objectionable in it! Sex exists... and not talking about it doesn't help anyone. Also... it's called acting for a reason. It's NOT REAL. oy. fundies and their head games.

  • Do the play SOMEWHERE ELSE. Courts have upheld school's rights to censor on-campus productions. But you have EVERY RIGHT to do the show elsewhere, and can probably get community support to do so.

Last year, some kids in Burbank, CA wanted to to "The Laramie Project" and were told they couldn't do it at school. They did the show anyway, and let me tell you - it was one of the most powerful theatre experiences I've ever had, seeing that show. The Colony Theater donated space and tech. PERSEVERE!

  • why cant people look at positive points of this play?its not all sex jokes and profanity. i like this play cuz i can relate. it made me THINK about decisions id been making, and taught me something. so parents who canceled this play, consider this: maybe YOUR kids are children & cant handle being exposed to "evil" but that doesnt mean we all are. whether people like it or not, this play deals w/ many issues in the everyday world that we cannot continue to dismiss, especially in our community.

  • As a former (very former, class of 1983) student of LHS who was very involved in several plays, I am appalled that this play was not allowed to take place at LHS. Get real. Sex and other 'immoral' acts are not caused by a play such as this. The parent who complained is so out of line calling these teenagers children.

Odd that more people came to the board meeting than the number of people who actually attend a play production. I say invite Steve Martin to opening night!!

  • One more thing, I was saddened and disgusted that a "community member" would call the director at his family home and leave a vm message basically threatening him. Please don't let your personal hate and frustrations be presented in such a low and immoral fashion. Be above it, Take a lesson from the cast... the "children" that you are so desperately trying to protect. It's not the school they need protecting from, it's the close-minded, uninformed, angry and vengeful community members.....

  • Morality lessons belong to parents and start when children are young. It is the foundation they build matters in the end. It is a parents responsibility to be present and HONEST with their children that will have the greatest impact on them as young adults, who by HS is what they are, YOUNG ADULTS.

As a parent of a cast member, I did my due diligence on this topic and support the cast/crew completely. I believe the school board served up a huge injustice to these kids and the community.

  • As a theatre director, I have to say that Martin's play is one of the best and displays a great deal of history, realism, passion, and comedy. A small amount of "foul" language or sexual reference should not silence an entire production. All this is teaching our young adults is that no one has the right to say what they want and no one should talk about sex. And BTW, parents who refer to high schoolers as "children" make themselves seem like condescending idiots. DO THE PLAY SOMEWHERE! ANYWHERE!

  • FINALLY ---Students should have the right to use their stage!

I am a Theater major and i think this is the sort of idea that causes drama within DRAMA... leave it be you old crazy woman let these kids perfom their drama. If you need it so bad.. get in your own little play.

  • I dont think it is necessary to have certain content in plays, i feel that this play however.. does NOT influence students to go out and participate in sex, drugs or ANYTHING of that nature. I think it is BEYOND RIDICULOUS that this production was cancelled.

  • Good grief if you don't like the content DONT GO.. if she doesn't want her "six kids" to go see it DONT LET THEM. The content in this play is no worse than what this OLD WOMAN (yes i can call her that because she called them CHILDREN) would hear if she walked in the halls of LHS or lets get practical people, THE REAL WORLD. sex, drugs, alcohol and "immoral things" are all over,if she can't get over herself and admit that this is LIFE... than she has a serious problem.

  • wow, um its just a fucking play ann landers. there not elementry school kids its high school. But, no we have to conform to what christians deam immoral, which is damn near everything. I'm not happy that high school has no free speach. So dont be a sheep use your autonomy!!

  • Hey just wanted to thank you for taking the time to mention our struggle here in Good Ol' Eastern Oregon. As an update, a student group at Eastern Oregon University has pledged to fund a production of our play at the college. We will be raising money to rent out the 500-person theater for a few nights in May. We will not charge admission at the door, just ask for donations. All profits made will go towards a Thespian Scholarship for aspiring actors who plan to attend EOU.

  • Thank you to all our supporters in the community, but be weary, for I feel this battle is still not over....

  • Have you read the play?

  • yeah ive read it, im in the cast. its really good. you should definitely come see it =]

  • As a former actress, and presumably a current adult, I would think you'd be familiar with SATIRE. Look it up. And good luck explaining to your children why they are totally unprepared to have any sort of intelligent conversation with any other member of society.

  • Just a quick update: the school board, in a 4-3 vote, decided to keep the play canceled despite community objections. No students involved in the play were allowed to speak. Really caring for the kids, eh?

  • "There's to many scenes where the children..." <--

WTF??!?!?! Yes because High School student are very young... ... ...I hate people like her....

  • NICE VIDEO RICHIE!!

Hope you guys get to do the play!
