  • the 2 dislikes were by people banging their heads to hard

  • @1kelseysmith LOL the 2 dislikes could be michael and hagar...

  • @zer0dahero or maybe lynard skynard

  • Listen. here is one fact from 1980. Yes van halen had a new sound and style in "78", and where blowing Black Sabath away. but i remember clearly in 1980, albums like sabbath "Heavan and Hell" AC/DC "Highway to Hell" and Ozzy's Debute solo, where much more well known, and had alot more radio play than van halens "Woman And Children" album. the WACF album was way overshadowd but the others>>

  • There's really no way to describe how f'n good this band was. Hearing this shit on guitar in '78 must have been a mind blower

  • This was on my birthday

  • How is it that there is very good quality video of a lot of bands from this era but everything of VH is poor- they were one of the top bands at this time- there must be something better out there.

  • @TZALMcConkey -- EXACTLY!!! Such a shame that most of the VH live videos are pretty bad quality. 78-81 are iffy. 1982 there were a couple nice pro-shot that are still decent quality and of course the US Festival. there must be better!!

  • he only known video source from the Van Halen 1 tour right here. The songs audio lags sometimes, but it catches itself up at one point or another, and the song is incomplete, as are the others, but its mostly there.

    --

Fuckin shame the relative lack of professional video documentation of this band in the early years.

  • Goddamn EVH had some killer licks & some bad ass stage moves!!! No wonder all the other guitarist back then were hating on him.

  • the band that would represent this planet is "THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!!"

  • awsome tone wow!!!

  • he is not human! well in a good way

  • funny,hes on fire.Thanks for vid.

  • Thanks! one of the best songs of all time!

  • Hey man, thanks again for allowing me to attach my video response.. I have a newer version on my page with better audio/video quality :)

  • Thanks so much for this video, 5150. It took me to a concert back when I just 4 yr old. Youtube is the shit!!!

  • VIDEO sucks!!!! Can barely even here this song.. this video tears them down.. should take it off

  • @Vampresscs its literally the only footage of them from 1978 on youtube so you should be grateful its even around.... the fact that anyone brought cameras into the concert without it being confiscated alone is amazing and this is something youd never get the chance to see. everyone else is amazed this was ever recorded on video

  • @peter1493 YES!, especially a 14 year old like me -.- would of been made to see them back them

  • @joshkosh95 mad*

  • @joshkosh95 yeah im 16 and this stuff is amazing

  • @Vampresscs this is one of the only videos from this tour. i think the true vh fans can deal with the quality.

  • @Vampresscs

better yet...you go else where......sure, we'd all love to see crystal clear footage. but it ain't out there for some reason.... be happy we have anything at all to look at, and quit crying like a middle school kid....really...

  • @gtrrobster i personaly bless youtube for videos like this. I consider myself lucky that aspiring guitarists like myself can watch old videos like this and see the master in his absolute prime.

  • I saw this tour in clevland, ohio. VH blew sabbaths brains out. sabbath also fired ozzy shortly after this. great show, eddie blistered it all night long

  • When Ozzy went solo he said Van Halen was his motivation to put together THAT kind of steller band and acquired Randy because he was clearly the next ground breaking guitarist coming out of L.A.

  • This is awesome, but where are them shoo-be doo-wahs? :3

  • 5150EVH5150... Your awesome for getting this stuff!!! Just unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks man!!

  • hellooooo fresno!

this could have been the greatest VH show ever recorded....

  • one word........RANDY....are you afraid?

  • I was at the 78 bakersfield show. They opened for Sabbath,,,they blew Sabbath away. It was my first ever concert. I will never forget it.

  • This tour was my FIRST concert EVER in 1978! ( I was a wee teen tot! ;) VH came on stage at Nashvillea old Municipal Auditorium and BLEW the citys frickem MIND!! Black sabbath set up their stage and we waited, and waited and waited for over 3 hours and then..NO SABBATH!! ( Ozzy had fallen asleep/passed out in another persons hotel room and they couldn't find him! A HUGE riot erupted with tons of damage!

  • It says Sept 1978 so they were probably the warm up band for Black Sabbath on their Never Say Die tour. I read that David Lee Roth saw Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne get into a fistfight backstage before one of the shows.

  • I didn't think a place like Bakersfield allowed bands like VH to perform there.

  • how much would it be for a copy of those 2 shows?

  • dont matter what is eddy now if he is gonna go down hill or go up hill...what it matter is that eddy is the best guittar player of all time ..mf....

  • That was very cool!!

  • Long before Eddie Van Halen became the douchebag he is today. How the mighty have fallen.

  • You mean before dave became a douche.....

Simply i understand that you don't know what the term douche bag means....and you call yourself vanhalenkid?

  • excuse me, have you seen how eddie talks about his fans now? He called us all undeserving. So know your facts bro.

  • Well i accept facts only by evidence. and you've been like the only person i've heard say something negative about eddie.

Everyone says Eddie's nice and respectful. So he probably was just having a bad day or was very irritable if you were telling the truth.

  • Dude, go to my profile. I garuntee I'm a bigger Van Halen fan then you'll ever be, but seriously. Read the new guitar world with Toni Iommi and Eddie on the cover. He CLEARLY says we are undeserving! I'm not saying anything bad about his playing! Im talking about him as a person

  • oh wow, you've been to a few concerts which i can't afford......your point?

And did you read hes whole rant about how people complain about music that they don't like. It's is clear that he didn't say that to be a douche it was mainly in general of how people react to music and don't appreciate the different genres.

  • its not really the only things he's done lately but alright. Look I'm a huge Van Halen fan So look dude. two years ago I would have sucked eddies dick big time, but the guy cant keep his promises. He says hes got 10 albums worth of material. Ok put it out. The fact is he hasn't released a new album since 98. He fired Michael ANthony for NO reason. He made Mike sign away everything. I mean how can you even say hes not a douche now. Eddie of 78 is alot differnt than eddie of 09

  • Did you say the new eddie was douche? no. I assumed you meant the Past Eddie to present.....

let Eddie do Eddie. Hes done his part for rock. I honestly think his rock career is only gonna go down hill from here.

  • Uhh well look at us... we are.. you dont know what its like to be in the music buiss.. people are just telling you do this, do that.. it gets annoing.. were lucky that hes still makin music..and Mike didnt get fierd. He left with sammy..

  • I dont think were undeserving at all. Van Halen would be nothing without there fans, no band would. I happy with the music he's given us too. But either put out a new album or retire. Because IM tired of the drama. We as fans don't deserve it. And face facts. Mike was fired. He had to find out on the internet he was replaced.

  • in what ways has Eddie became a douchebag? Awnser me that!

  • epic

  • this was the shit this was it the tour to be on..they had something to prove & they did it, night after night, like Zappa said they gave Rock the shot in the arm it needed, they turned the world upside down & inside out.. i remember sitting in my car circa 1978 and listening to"You really got me" saying to myself "who, or What the hell is that guitar..who is that?

holy shit i was floored i was in shock, lord knows what was to come, we'd all eat ,shit, & drink Van halen & eddie's licks.lol

  • I guess thats why we get upset w/ these guys and Eddie, my generation never had it's own guitar hero like the 60's w/ Page,Beck, & Clapton, so we got Eddie & this great band & we don't want no one screwin w/ our Hero's & gods.. We are the generation of Van halen, John McEnroe, Joe Satch, The late 50's early 60's boomers, don't mess w/ our shit. the 60's lost it all..Morrison,Janis, & Hendrix,

then we lost SRV, & Bonham,Moonie &Entwistle..no more let's keep it goin?

    follow Bono & u-2 ..peace

  • I tell people all the time, ya had to be there to know what total shock this stuff was. I remember it like it was yesterday: "Eruption" came on the radio...had no clue who or what it was...then it went straight into 'You Really Got Me". I looked at my friend and said, "What the f*** happened to The Kinks"? He said, "That's Van Halen". And that was all she wrote.

  • I remember one of Eddies peers was sayin"When i 1st heard the guitar i didn;t know what i was hearin, sounded like aliens or some shit from outer space" lol

i think that was Zak Wlyde who said that..

yeah he was a mutha F**ker when he 1st toured..like Dave said we came on the stage w/ flame throwers & bombs.

  • that was actually Gene Simmons who said that......Eddie blew his mind...thats why VH is where they are today...Gene the business man ...Cheers

  • Gene the jew, no problem great guy, ROTH RULEZ

  • Yea ..Gene so they say Discoverd them.. but the record deal that he set up for them didnt work out..

  • This is from Fresno, the night before they did the infamous fake-parachute drop at Anaheim Stadium. VH ruled that night. They kicked Hagar, Black Sabbath, and Boston right off the stage. "Me and Ed was down in Milwaukee.."

  • l love the solo 2:32

    and to qoute Frank Zappa

"Eddie Van Halen saved rock n roll"

  • I feel bad for who ever they are opening for here...

  • i'm pretty sure they opened for black sabbath. i saw them in cleveland around this time and that's who it was.

  • Ed is just blowing my mind here. So much

    fire but tasty as hell...

  • Sounds like Ed took "La Grange" and sped it up.

  • Wow, this is so rare. Thanks for sharing.

  • Yes, some comments are correct about the meter... this version is around 210 BPM & the album is around 223 BPM

  • Fresno is California man! The real deal. Fresno is the soul of California Like Van Halen is the fun in rock. It only follows that VH thrives here.

  • the drums sound in this is great

that double bass is off the hook

  • when this album came out people were amazed because no guitarist was this amazing since hendrix (im not a big fan pf hendrix he is good but not that good)

  • Eddie was fucking peoples brains out at this time

  • @PaulGioia oh yes he was! Now he's a burned out drunk...lol

  • Comment removed

  • haha, i went and saw Van Halen in '07 with Dave out in Fresno...that was awesome! Dave was reminiscing about the old days before they got signed, playing shows all over, partying....smoking weed, lol

  • Good find !!! :0

  • Slightly slower than the album version. My fave VH song is Hot For Teacher (I am a drummer) but the guitar playing on this song on the studio version is the best shit EVH has ever laid down. Sure his style has been beaten to death but nobody can play like that with his touch/feeling. The little solos in this song are what makes EVH the top dog as far as I concerned...

And yes, Alex's sets were impressive with the black and white striped one from '81 being my fave...

    AFM

  • Or, then again, maybe it was just Dave's JOB to support Eddie, I don't know. But it's still great to see these guys when they were just starting to come into their own, before they got REALLY big. It must've taken a lot of folks (from the record company and so forth) to help these guys get to where they got, it's mind-boggling, really, to imagine....

  • These guys were just getting their shit together back then. I don't think Eddie would have been shit without Dave supporting him the way he did. He really believed in Eddie and he wanted everyone else to, too (it's obvious when you see them on stage).

  • Man, this is really slowed down.

  • Eddie.........wow!

  • Jeez-that lick at 2:32 is SICK!

  • Fact.

  • One of my favorite songs off the album. Man, did Alex love his drum kits.

  • I wonder how many people in this crowd realized what they were seeing! My guess is a lot of them. You just can't deny the genius of his playing and their sound...

  • back in the club days eddie would play with his back to the crowd so his playing style didn't get ripped off

  • REally? Lot of good that did! The guy was the most copied guitar player of the late 70s to mid 80s.

Search "Tom Scholz Solo" , from Boston. An A List band, and he's up there on stage aping Eddie. Not too many guitarists have that kind of influence where even established musicians are trying to copy them.

  • Ed only turned his back when he was playing the two-handed stuff. Alex told him to do it.

  • VH today, VH 30 years ago. Still VH, Rock On!

  • fuck Ed was playing smokin live back then, i wish there was more footage of his early live days.

  • Eddie was the first to do swing on rock guitar, long before Satriani and the rest.

  • Still good, I like it just a bit faster, Think the Intro sounds unbelievable when it comes out real fast. Still, this is great. Thanks 5150EVH5150. @007/2008 tour rocks. Saw them twice. Both great. Long Live VH.

  • There simply never has been, and likely never will be, a showman quite like Diamond David Lee Roth.

  • Van Halen Is just great,,,

But the song dont need to be played faster today,,,,The beat hear is just perfect.

  • *rubs eyes* well shit or shineola, seeing is believing. This is a gift indeed. Thanks dude who posted this. You're a god amongst fans.

  • How can anyone say this sounds better than 2007 VH? It is classic, bt the new VH is unbelievable. With or without Mikey. Go Wolf!

  • I saw VH three months after this was filmed and I'll be seeing them tonight. I'm STOKED!

  • wow, imagine almost 30 years later,LIVE, they can still play this song a hell of a lot faster, and have it still sounding fuckin great!Keep on rockin VH!

  • Easy to see why they blew Stoned-out Sabbath. And just think, Eddie originally wanted Dave to stop dancing and screaming because he thought Ozzy was the prototypical front man at the time

  • priceless!!! thanks 5150!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • right at the end of the clip it sounds like he is doing a lick from Icecream man in his solo.

  • omg this is awesome! so much energy its incredible. they were unstoppable back then

  • What I meant to say was song or performance, but the album undoubtedly grooves too!

  • Man, just listen to the groove on this album! Dave's vocals seem a little odd, but this vid's pretty much amazing!

  • jesus what i wouldnt do to go back in time to 1978......

  • same here!

  • As much as I love Sabbath I can see how VH blew them off the stage! What city is this 5150EVH5150?

  • Fresno, they always rock the best in that city.

  • Really wish I was there.....man....It's only ROck N Roll....and I like it.

  • wow !!! increddible !!!! congratulations i'm the one =) eddie van halen = god

  • eddie eddie !!! a futuriste guitar player

  • could anyone , including eddie, ever get this insane guitar tone again. He lost this sweet tone, with the pristine, clear seperation. Get it back eddie!

  • ok , listen charlotte 2007 version is extraodinaire , not bad for a new halen

  • openeing slot for black sabbath, '78. Classic!

  • What a Fix man, bBetter than doing drugs....I think
