You can easily go wrong while improvising, actually. Mike just doesn't. Firstly, you can go wrong at a strictly technical level. And in the case of this song, you can go wrong stylistically too, because the whole point of Portnoy's soloisms at the end of Finally Free is to raise the tension, and that has to happen all by himself, as the other instruments play the same thing over and over, they don't build up anything. And he obviously succeeds. Brilliantly.

Theres no possible way to go wrong on an improvisation. On the LSFNY DVD he talks about how that was just an improvised part.
