Theres an incredible song out there that is really easy and it really stimulates your overall guitar skills, tabs and the song sample can be found on my channel, check it out, really appreciated!
You are amazing, I got a cheap mandolin, that came with a book, very confusing, I was ready to give up, then I found you:) so I still have hope. It is my dream to learn to play so, I can play with my grandfather.
i wanted to say thanks for your lessons . You are a really great teacher I have about 24 guitars but i really like the mandolin this is coming to me pretty easy . I really love the sound the mandolin gives . Thanks again for the good work . ....
Thanks Brad. The point you made about training the unconscious, and -- bottom line -- you don't want to store any bad habits there is so right, and so important, and so clearly expressed. And it doesn't apply only to the mandolin. Wonderful little video.
Thank you so much for this. I just got my mandolin today and because of you guys not only do I know how to properly tune my mandolin. I also know how to play a few chords. :D
Everybody should learn Paul McCartney's Dance Tonight as their first song on mandolin. Perhaps the simplest and most entertaining beginners song ever.
i just bought my very first mandolin. i have never played one but have wanted to for years! it will be coming in the mail in the next few days so i am so excited to get started learning. your videos have been the best i have been able to find. thank you for sharing!
Thanks SO much Brad for that! I just bought an Epiphone Mandolin today and have never played in my life. My dad and I sat here, watched this and then took turns at playing all the chords. You made it so easy to learn - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
@Juicefani11 Believe me. mandolin is not made for small fingers. you just have to find your own ways to put the chords. I rarely use my indexfinger. but use my little finger almost all the time to be able to use the chords. it hurts like h*ll in the beginning. but with time u get used to it =)
@Juicefani11 I know so many huge & fat fingered people who play mandolin effortlessly and also know so many small fingered people who play the widest possible chords on a guitar ! It doesnt matter ! Just keep trying buddy :)
hi, i'm just learning the mandolin and I am not familiar with all the terms yet. but the very last, smallest string on my mandolin sounds in tune with the other one until i try to play, they it sounds VERRRYY off key. What am I doing wrong? I tuned it yesterday w/ a BL video and everything else sounds good. is my string bad?
I am a guitar player and just thought about adding a Mandolin to my family of guitars but have never tried it before. Not only that you sold me the Mandolin now you are absolutely right with your teaching tricks - I can tell from myself - to slow it down to avoid false memories in the brain. THANKS! Best Danny
I will be getting my mandolin for Christmas in just 16 very long days! Can't wait. I love your simple yet clear teaching style. I will be signing up for the premium lessons once I get my mando!
Does anyone have any recommendations on where and what mandolin to buy? I'm looking to play almost exclusively baroque music. I'm an experienced violinist and I'm able to pick up string instruments quickly.
"before you know it, these will be filed away in your subconscious mind" i love how he words these things but it is totally relevant, no harm intended to mister laird haha thanks for the help!
@spamount028 "Golden Donkey Ate Elephant", lol, that's brilliant!!!
Can you think of a phrase to remember how to tune for "Dance Tonight" by Paul McCartney, because that song is played in lower tuning. Can you think of a phrase for FCGD?
I just bought a mandolin package based on this video. I've played rhythm accoustic electric for 24 + years. Was worried about my fat fingers not being able to fit the small frets. Well, this video made it look easy (at least the key of G) and now...my mandolin came yesterday, and already I've learned 6 chords based on the chart that came with it. Thanks Brad and to you beefcake....you started something. The rest of my band may never forgive you though....now we'll have to learn bluegrass.
I just got a cheap Rogue mandolin today. I got the bridge lowered and it's tuned, thanks to you! I've never played before today, but your chords are helpful! BTW, i'm a long time guitar player. Thanks Brad!
Actually, if you play guitar, these patterns are very familiar. The tuning is like the first four strings of the guitar, only mirrored. The shapes for the mandolin C and G chords are also identical to the basic guitar counterparts (once again, only mirrored).
It might sound shady, but I just bought my first mandolin off Craigslist. With enough patience, you can get some pretty good deals off of there. But if you're pickier, maybe stick with a traditional music store.
Sorry Brad, but my 55 years of playing the classical piano has softened the ends of my fingers to such a degree that I'd never be able to play a basic C Maj chord on this Mandolin. It was fun but it looks like I better stick with the Steinway and place this instrument on eBay. I thank you kindly for your time making your great videos!!!
Yeah, I hear most pianists can't switch over to mandolin, guitar, or any instrument of that nature because of the issue you brought up. I suggest trying the ukulele because they don't use steel strings and it may be easier on your fingers.
Not entirely true. After four years of classical piano training I was able to pick up the guitar easily. But I suppose it wasn't easy my fingers bled over my high action cheap-ass broke stratacoustic but piano certainly helped my notation and learning curve so 50-50.
I wasn't saying that the musical skills learned on the piano weren't helpful, just that many pianists aren't willing to put up with the pain to learn a string instrument. You are a great example of the exception.
Thanks. I am also a guitar player who played the violin many years ago. mandolin tuning is the same as violin tuning, so that kinda helps me.
I think there are a couple of different things here - trained musicians like myself think more about what notes we are playing; others think more about shapes. Both work just as well.
And finally, the word is "proprioception". It means knowledge of the whereabouts of one's own body parts. It's fascinating and far more complex than mandolin playing!.
Cool!! My father has an old mandoline and now finally I can play something on it. I tuned it with one of your ither vids and now I'm trying to learn some chords :-) Thank you!!
Nice intro to the mandolin. He's slightly wrong about muscle memory though - there is a thimg called proprioperception, which is the body's way of recognising where parts of the body are in relation to each other, and can be trained. If you practice touching your nose with your eyes shut, you get better at it. He's right in the fact that the memory doesn't reside in the muscle; but the learning takes place via the interaction of the nerves in the muscle with those in the brain and spinal cord.
Thanks so much! I have been a uke player for years, but mandolin always intimidated me because i thought 8 strings would be too hard.... I bought a mandolin 1 hour ago and I am already rocking, thanks to you! Amazing lessons and I can't wait to start kicking out some mandolin tunes to add to my uke tunes!
