hey can ants melt under a magnifying glass? cuz i just killed one on my "fake wood"(soft rubbery things) and the head seens to come off and now theres a red/yellow dot that looks alot like a pimple on my floor
@derevo2 you're definitely wrong... I have multiple links saying that the area of a circle = pi x R raised to two. If you really still don't believe me I'll send them to you.
Awesome! I love science! We never had ANY experiments remotely close to this when I was in school... You can turn chunks of broken glass into shapes (sort of like glass blowing)... This is really cool! There are so many things you could do with this! How much did that Fresnel lens cost? That's Awesome! 5/5!!
I know, even when I was in school (which wasn't all that long ago), we hardly had any demonstrations... it bugged me, they'd have all of this cool physics equipment and stuff in the classroom and learn how to use a Bunsen burner safely, but we NEVER actually used any of it! Schools just don't do demonstrations anymore like I hear they used to.
The lens cost around $180 if I remember correctly, it's been a while. They do have even larger sizes than this, I'd like to upgrade someday!
Good grief, that's astonishing, never knew this was possible, nor that lenses of that size existed. Wish we'd had vids and demos like this, ( and your other vids/demos ), when I was at school.
This wouldn't work in Britain though, we don't have sun.
Foxsmith2009, funny you should say that about the sun in Britain. See, I've noticed a strange correlation between advanced cultures and the lack of sunshine. For instance, in Africa, South America, etc., there is a hellatious amount of sun and the cultures there are pretty much the least advanced in the world. However, northern countries, which get the least sun, are more advanced, technologically speaking. This of course is a generalized statement, but there does seem to be some correlation.
Yes it should have freed up the oxygen, kind of like how heating mercury oxide does... at least I think so, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm really just melting iron oxide itself... I should try this out weighing it before and after, as it should lose mass if it's losing oxygen.
Actually yes, it does give off oxygen... I'm just now remembering that the thermite reaction (Aluminum powder mixed with iron oxide) works because the iron oxide decomposes to produce pure oxygen which burns the aluminum... so under the right conditions, rust is an oxidizer and not merely the oxidized!
then funneled the beaker threw a water jacket made from pvc pipe. would it condence into a liquid?. i thought i saw something like this on "myth busters"?
props to you for the warning about eye protection, too, for all the little kids at home. And, by the way, for you kids at home, don't try this at home. Go next door...:P
Because aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat; no point on the aluminum can actually reaches Al's melting point (of around 600 degrees C) since it distributes and dissipates the heat so quickly. I've found using other surfaces to do my melting on just melts itself to the object I'm heating.
Had to wear some Welder's Goggles, I don't remember the number of it since I've had the same one in there for 3 years, and I got my lens through Edmund Scientific, but I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere. And yeah it'd probably burn you.
great video! I WILL get one of these!

The error occurred when cm^2 was converted to m^2. 1 m^2 = 10,000 cm^2.
1 m^2 = (100 cm)^2 = 10000 cm^2
The correct answer is .1642 m^2

You've calculated the surface completely wrong!!!
the surface is only 0.16m2

surface of this lens is 0.16m².

You should try using that beast with a mini heat exchanger/boiler set up. You might be able to power a whole steam generator!

whats the name of the song at the beginning? I've been trying to find out ever since I saw Death Note. (I don't think its L's song)

It's called "L's Theme" I believe. =)

then funneled the beaker threw a water jacket made from pvc pipe. would it condence into a liquid?. i thought i saw something like this on "myth busters"?

I have no idea what you mean... like condensing liquid oxygen?
AScannerClearly 2 years ago
yes! am most positive i saw this done by myth busters. the myth was could the confederate south . have made a liquid fuel rocket.
src0872 2 years ago
You've calculated the surface completely wrong!!!
If you are talking of square meters then you need to use radius in meters not in centimeters.
So, the radius is 0.228m and the surface is only 0.16m2

where did you get that fresnel lens?
i have been playing with the front screen fresnels out of old rear projection TV,and i cant get a tight enough focus to melt the brick.

wow if it did that when it was that big think if they would have made it into a small dot like I do it's about the size of a pen tip.

Aluminum does not have a very high melting point... How did you melt the glass and iron oxide without melting the aluminum underneath?
Vierelleni 3 years ago
Because aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat; no point on the aluminum can actually reaches Al's melting point (of around 600 degrees C) since it distributes and dissipates the heat so quickly. I've found using other surfaces to do my melting on just melts itself to the object I'm heating.
