You really wouldn't believe the amount of time that is spent in the Hangar fixing and maintaining The Tunderbirds, Snowbirds and Red Arrows (and other Aerobatic teams). The aviant and mechanical engineers work day in day out to make sure that these pieces of finesse are ready and safe to fly. Props to them.

in very small trainer jets the f16's the tbirds fly can actually be made combat ready in a very short amount of time.i dont think any country in the WORLD would want to go head to head with american pilots in combat.

Red Arrows fly in smaller craft so that they can manoeuvre more effectively, for better tricks. Yes the thunderbirds are very good at what they do, and quite impressive, but I don't think I agree with your comment about air combat. The RAF is second to noone. You really think an F16 would be able to pull one over the harrior? If you don't know what the harrior is, I suggest you look it up. Its capable of a lot more than any regular fighter jet.

Red Arrows can not even come close with the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. richardandeddie that had to be the most retarded thing ive heard. The reason why The Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels have had crashes is because they fly in alot closer formations then any other teams and they are alot more daring. If you havent seen them perform and your talking shit your wasting my time and everyone elses. Bottomline Blue Angels and Thunderbirds are the best in the world!

First of all, the red arrows used trainer aircraft in their demos. The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels used actual fighter aircraft that have seen combat to demonstrate the performace and reliablity of the F-18 and F-16. And speaking about crashes, all flight demonstration teams have seen their fair share of incidents including your beloved red arrows.

AGREED! Thunderbirds have proven themselves time and time again. They are unbelievable, I've seen the Red Arrows and the Snow Birds. In Reno each year some of them come down for the Championship Airshows and ive experianced them all, But every year the Thunderbirds just surprise everyone.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I find afterburners to be very amusing. I believe only two of those teams have them. Sneak pass... whoa look out, gets me everytime. Nothing quite like a good old fighter blowing by you at like 500kts with full burner at like 500 ft. Beats the hell out of those piddly-ass trainers those Europeans/Canadians be usin.

Not so. The Thunderthuds rely on G-suits. the Angels use pure talent and skill. No G-suits!

No G-suits result in better, tighter, safer formations. The Angels have a better safety record, They have 2 engines, can land on a carrier, and are combat qualified. and the F/A-18 the Angels use can be combat ready in less than 24 hours.

Where can I find info on the 1980's T-38 Talon crash of the entire diamond formation? I was in Reno for one of their first shows with their F-16's, I got all choked up, it was great. Randolph AFB 1968, I saw them fly their F-105 Thunderchief's, best air show jet ever.

Flying in formation is used by every airforce, not only thunderbirds, so it must be an "instrumental shortcut" for the perfection that shows.

Another example is when they fly in a V-formation, and turn. If they turn to the left for example, the planes to the right gets a higher altitude than the plane to the left for example. In this situation, how do they do it?

Someone who knows, i'd appreciate a reasonably answer;)

Formation flying in turns involves use of power settings by all involved as well as less or more control inputs. The outer aircraft in a left turn would power up a bit since will travel a greater distance through the turn, and will bank more and use more rudder to hold position.

The pilots learn to fly "Cheats". What this is is a small change to the "Diamond" or "Delta" to make the formation look proper from the ground. In some cases the the #2 jet might fly closer to the diamond and at the same time the #3 jet flies a little bit further from the diamond. You are correct in the fact that the outside jet has to power up slightly as the inside jet has to power back slightly to stay in formation. I am an ex team member from 1983-1986.

What I'm asking about, is what instrument does help them, as Autopilot IAS, takes alot of time, like 1-2 minutes, to get 100% stabil at the speed you want.. Of course they practice alot, its not that, but does someone know, Which instruments, and how are they used to do this? Same goes for the "team-roll".

All pilots fly off the Commander/Leader who is using his Head-Up Display to read altitude, airspeed, attitude, and ascent-descent rate data projected there. The other pilots do not look into the cockpit during formation maneuvers.
