to the Bison ultra... Neutral jump, don't press anything in the air and when you land, do a damagin combo. Bison is pretty fucking hard to fight to be honest, you just feel like he will scissor kick or ex psycho crush you ANY time.
Despite the fact that this was over a month ago, I have to say it: You were right about the Gouken player fumbling around for the whole match. He was . . . awful. Still, it shows that you weren't classified as a complete noob if you could tell how good people were.
renic, with cody you can just end any blockstring with lpCriminalUpper. its safe on block and its very bad to spend 2 meter on it like you did in 5:32 (even though it hit there). also on bisons scissor kicks, there is nothing you can do but jump back, reset the situation, maybe even make him come to you so he loses charge and play the footsie game again
Also, I'm really looking forward to watching this series. I'm a Vega/Rose who's trying to up his game too. It's nice to be able to watch someone good learn.
The way to stop scissor kick preasure with Cody is either time a EX zonk or the better option do cr.mk. Also when you use cr.mk you use it with an option select db+LP+LK+MK. Problem with this u can't combo afterwards you could also try to stop it with a normal trow but that depends in spacing. Good pokes against Bison are st.mk, st.hk, cr.mk, cr.hp and b.mp (for anti air purpose). To start your offense cr.lk, normal trow, f.mp and f.hp(this one is risky like Alex overhead) are your best friends.
Im trying to get good at this game too, I used to be pretty good, I have 2 b rank characters online.(Cody is one of em) but then I kept losing and losing so im starting over fresh with learning Makoto and trying to lern the game
@mzhao1 yes you can block it. cross up or no cross up. try it. but i always just jump. sometimes i jump forward if they realize theyre dumb asses and they hold back when they do it.
I used to main bison, so here were my few thoughts:
1) Bison can control where U2 (Psycho Punisher) lands. He's vulnerable in the air. Also, I once had a Balrog player charge a TAP during the freeze and use an autocorrect TAP to stuff U2 (invincible startup FTW).
2) Your cr.lp probably beats scissors. Either weather the storm or mash jab.
3) Bison has a bunch of wakeup options. All very punishable, but not punishable the same way. Also they all startup slowly, so a meaty is probably safe.
And Renic delivers again! These are so the videos for me. Been playing 3rd Strike for "some time" and now starting SSFIVAE:2012 again with Cody. What more can I ask than these videos?
Change your speaking voice. Add generic electronica beat or orchestra or something. Right now I'm falling asleep, even though I am interested and trying to listen. Pretend like you are hyped up for what you're talking about and it will pay off
acually the bison matchup is way in cody's favor space it out eat that sciccor kick dnt be afraid to neutral jump and use i thnk cody's jump fierce (the downward fist punch) cody also has alot of block strings that leave him safe and if you can jump over and cross up bison to make him lose that charge
Don't be afraid to just hold jump when Bison throws out U2 randomly.
And yeah, generally you gotta let him just scissor kick until the pushback moves him too far away. It doesn't do very much chip damage, and they increased the pushback in AE.
cody back-strong aa when they are right above u. standing rh aa when they are jumping in at a distance. qcf+rh for close/medium range to get combo afterwards.
this may seem counteintuitive to a 3s player because parry is always available, but in sf4 be prepared to lame it out, if need be. however, this may not matter as much if you're maining cody. other than that, basic strategy still applies, most of which you already know from previous sf games.
i played sf2 and turbo casually. never got into sf3. returned with ssf4, and i started playing 3s 2 years ago. what i'll say about sf4 is that it's a combination (in terms of psychology and move priority) of sf2 c.e.,st, and 3s. for example, standing medium still AA like it does in c.e., and dashing usage can be applied similar to 3s. a main concept of sf4 is to realize that some matches are not meant to be won in a traditional fashion, depending on matchups. ...

im changing to akuma atm so it would be nice to face you ReNiC. Unfortunately theres only a yellow connection between Germany and America(assuming you're from America:P)
yea I wouldn't go with the "under a certain bp/pp meaning they are easy". They could be training a new character, or bullshitting. my pp go as low as 600 to as high as 2000 depending on my mood and if I'm trying out new things.
I'm digging this series man. It'll be great to see your progress in SF4 and how much you improve. Also, thank you for acknowledging the fact that I am a cutie haha
I get how difficult the transition can be, mobility is a lot more fluid in 3s and every character was rewarded fo their good reads thanks to pary, SF4 is all about footsies and untechable knockdowns
@tardie Seriously, most of them are horrible and just brainless in what they are doing. I'm just at the 1500 BP area and most of them don't know what to do right after an untechable knockdown (Akuma players especially).
n. jump on bison's psycho abortion, n. jump fierce is your best follow up since cody's n. jump fierce is godly. also frame trap all day with f. mp - its your best pressure button. also also there is one thing about 3s you can transition to AE2012: knock down, walk forward, walk back, and blow up that tech. works even better in AE2012. ;) good luck with cody, renic <3
A little thing for bison, every time you see him glow yellow and take to the air, dash forward, because odds are he's going for an ex headstomp and dashing forward makes the headstomp whiff, which you can then punish. Too many bisons think it's a safe move.
You don't use any safe jumps. Like agaisnt bison, you did a back throw and just stood there. You should at least do the safe jump and block if he do the ex psycho crusher. At least once in a while.
EX ruffian kick does punish point blank ex psycho crusher. I think the ultra does too. Also all scissor kicks other than lk (which is neutral) are pretty punishable on block unless spaced perfectly. c.lk is your fastest normal (3f), has great range and combos into mk ruffian kick for an easy punish on many things until you figure out a better one. (eg, gouken palms are -6, so you get it for free)
@MetalKingMaximo EX Zonk isn't really abusable. It's very slow to start up, and you need to FADC to make it safe. Bison can't punish that hard (though c.mp xx hk scissors will hurt a bit), but for some characters its a free ultra on block.
@chousukebe Well I don't just throw it out there, I abuse it as a counter, he has some time where he goes through moves and projectiles, so if they are swining upclose and I'm about to get hit or mixed up i release ex zonk, it makes me dodge and counter them, And for the time when EX Zonk gets blocked cleanly and im about to get ultraed, I throw back my ultra right after zonk at it usually beats out anything.
@MetalKingMaximo EX Zonk is a GTFO move if the opponent is just rushing you down mindlessly, but it carries a huge risk. Mashing ultra after EX zonk is just praying that the opponent will miss their punish... The ultra won't even come out if the player knows what they're doing because you're taking a guaranteed punish which depending on character could be 20 to 50 percent of your life.
@Necrophelix It will be a safe jump against 5 frame reversals. So it will work against Yun's short upkicks, but not Yun's EX upkicks. Also works against Blanka's 4 frame EX up-ball, because Blanka gets up 1 frame slower than normal.
Codys back+medium punch is one of the best anti-airs in the game, you should use it more. It even beats bisons headstomp. Also, you can dash forward after you land it and start your offense as they land.
@alekschang cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mp xx HP Criminal Upper does less damage than cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk xx HP Criminal Upper most of the time, because the pushback on cr.mp causes hits from the criminal upper to wiff.
A lot of characters (including cody's U2) cannot punish focuses very well because if the other player is smart they will backdash which results in them being airborne and the beginning of the ultra either resetting them or knocking them down and not fully connecting.
It seems like Ultra usage in general is best suited for the killing combo or near raw ultra to close the gap if you are losing. Focus attack punish via Ultra would mean you'd lose the tactical advantage of having ultra on hand.
When you knock Dic down, he's free to safe jumps (fastest reversal being 14 frames). Everything he does to try and escape is punishable (punish psycho crusher with ex. ruffian kick and punish head stomp with back strong) or makes him lose a lot of ground (devil's reverse and teleport). Learn and React.
Actually getting the knock down is the problem, Dic has great footsies. You need to play lame until you can get in, then stay in or force him into a corner. Also, cr. forward blows up scissors.
Back strong works on all of Bison's options in the air, including head stomp and EX head stomp. MK, HK, and EX scissor kick can be punished with low short to mk ruffian. Immediately jumping after a back throw is a safe jump.
Renic, light scissor kicks can't be punished on block (by anyone). The stronger variants are punishable on block, depending on distance from the opponent. Scissor kicks (all?) can be hit out of, but as the attack is fairly quick, you must predict it prior. Unfortunately, I don't know how (if) Cody can do this.
Hey Renic, as far as Bison's scissor kicks, you should be able to punish most of them with a crouching short into a Ruffian kick or Criminal Upper combo. You'll start to get the feel for the timing for the links and punishes once you've practiced them a lot in training mode and real matches. Bison's wakeup options are pretty vast, so it's pretty hard to punish all of them. Roundhouse Ruffian can punish Devil's Reverse and I think EX Zonk Knuckle can punish Psycho Crusher. Hope this helps!
Could have just jumped and beat out Bison's ultra but like you said, you didn't know about it. It's a learning process, but I don't need to tell you that.
hey renic this video is real cool and a great idea for a series. i'm trying to get into SF4 as well, however i have virtually no fighting game experience. i'll try to post a comment on each of these videos with my progress and i'll try to participate in your streams. thanks man, great work with everything
I was a huge 3rd strike player and loved going to super arcade out here in pomona, then sf4 hit and I wasn't feeling it... I eventually jumped on a couple months ago and mained cody. Cody has a hard time dealing with pressure without meater. I'm not sure of the match ups on paper, but I have trouble against Bison, sim, and guile.
yep, you can just jump if bison does a randomn ultra like that. not gonna happen against a good player though. ps you can't jump out of the ultra if he does it meaty on your wakeup.
Cool video! A lot of characters can't deal with the scissor kick nonsense from Bison once he's got it going, but for Cody actually, when I used to use him, I found out that Cody's cr.mk can avoid it or beat it out. It's interesting.
The reason not all characters can punish a focus attempt on reaction is because, if they see the ultra start up, the other guy can mash back dash, which puts them in airborne, and a lot of ultra first hits will hit the first hit but reset them (like Cody's ultra 2).
Codys hardest hitting combo is a one frame link, st.mp>cr.hp>hp.cu. Plink the hp to criminal upper and you'll be pro in no time. Also forward medium punch applies efficient pressure and frame traps with Cody that can lead to this combo and unique mixup opportunities. Always start the first round with standing round house. Last hint is to look up Option-Select's Ryan Hunter's Cody to learn how to play him efficiently. GGS
Also you are giving online players WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much credit. The average XBL live player (and honestly, the average SF4 player) doesn't think when they play.
This seems like a great idea, hoping to see lots more of these. I've been starting to take the game lots of more seriously since last summer and I might say I'm fairly decent at the game right now so it's nice to see how someone who's around my skill level sees the game and discusses it.
Against Bison, Scissor kick pressure is something every character has to deal with, it's really dumb.
General tip with Cody, if you want to learn to punish something try crouching short. It's 3 frame, has amazing range, so it can punish a lot of things.
i understand fully what you're going through i'm a 3rd strike player too and i'm not use to blocking that much because i've been spoiled with parries lol
Just so you know, cody's backthrow is a free safejump against characters without a 3-frame reversal (i.e. shotos) if you just hold upforward and come in with j.hk.
to the Bison ultra... Neutral jump, don't press anything in the air and when you land, do a damagin combo. Bison is pretty fucking hard to fight to be honest, you just feel like he will scissor kick or ex psycho crush you ANY time.

A few tips for the Bison match up
1. play it with a Sagat mindset. Cody can really zone Bison out with rocks, b.MP
2/ predict scissors with neutral jumps when he's at max scissor range, this leads to a 300 dmg combo.
3. when he's at normal range, scissor get stuffed by any normal on prediction (it has a slower startup)
4. abuse slide at Bison's max poke range to stuff his s.MK - s.H
00Morm00 1 month ago
1) Anti-air with b.MP and HK Ruffian preferably.
2) Don't focus so much, it's not parry.
3) Buffer MK Ruffian on cr.lp and cr.mp for controlling space. This will stuff scissor kicks during startup and also prevent dash ins from Bison.
4) Just jump against random Bison U2. If you're knocked down and he times it meaty though, you have to block correctly.
5) Option select cr.MK or meaty cr.MK beats all of Bison's options on wakeup, except teleport (neutral against it).

@Necrophelix It will be a safe jump against 5 frame reversals. So it will work against Yun's short upkicks, but not Yun's EX upkicks. Also works against Blanka's 4 frame EX up-ball, because Blanka gets up 1 frame slower than normal.
Slightly more accurate fact.

@SliceOfGold i'd argue that abel is more like sean from 3s. Hakan is the obvious choice for an alex replacement.

And if there's any really basic things you need to learn about Cody and can apply really easily, it's:
1) cr lp, cr lp, cr mp XX hp criminal upper = better hit confirm than cr lp, cr lp, cr lk xx mk ruffian kick
2) back throw --> hold up towards --> jp hk = safe jump
3) learn to anti-air with back mp, st hk, cr mk (the slide) and hk ruffian kick
:] good luck!
alekschang 1 month ago
@alekschang cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mp xx HP Criminal Upper does less damage than cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk xx HP Criminal Upper most of the time, because the pushback on cr.mp causes hits from the criminal upper to wiff.

A lot of characters (including cody's U2) cannot punish focuses very well because if the other player is smart they will backdash which results in them being airborne and the beginning of the ultra either resetting them or knocking them down and not fully connecting.
grassysaq 1 month ago
Renic, have you seen Ryan Hunter's Cody Guide? You should definitely check it out, if you haven't.

If bison does ultra just hold up.

Crouch medium kick with cody stops scissors clean.

Also, cr. forward blows up scissors.
akipuff 1 month ago
Now your going to have to deal with butthurt stubborn 3rd strike players. I repect your decision in trying something new.
Macen121487 1 month ago
Back strong works on all of Bison's options in the air, including head stomp and EX head stomp. MK, HK, and EX scissor kick can be punished with low short to mk ruffian. Immediately jumping after a back throw is a safe jump.
Also get at Sanchez.

Paltheos 1 month ago
Punish bison's EX crusher with a throw after he passes. Scissor kick I think you can punish with a zonk knuckle after the last frame
faust11 1 month ago
Hey Renic, as far as Bison's scissor kicks, you should be able to punish most of them with a crouching short into a Ruffian kick or Criminal Upper combo. You'll start to get the feel for the timing for the links and punishes once you've practiced them a lot in training mode and real matches. Bison's wakeup options are pretty vast, so it's pretty hard to punish all of them. Roundhouse Ruffian can punish Devil's Reverse and I think EX Zonk Knuckle can punish Psycho Crusher. Hope this helps!

Damn Renic, really....? Good shit though, do what you want. Good luck.

Could have just jumped and beat out Bison's ultra but like you said, you didn't know about it. It's a learning process, but I don't need to tell you that.

I was a huge 3rd strike player and loved going to super arcade out here in pomona, then sf4 hit and I wasn't feeling it... I eventually jumped on a couple months ago and mained cody. Cody has a hard time dealing with pressure without meater. I'm not sure of the match ups on paper, but I have trouble against Bison, sim, and guile.
nvis 1 month ago
yep, you can just jump if bison does a randomn ultra like that. not gonna happen against a good player though. ps you can't jump out of the ultra if he does it meaty on your wakeup.
ogiekeaney123 1 month ago

3RD STRIKE LOST ANOTHER ONE OH NO
Syiiriine 1 month ago

Lexuname2008 1 month ago
Against Bison, Scissor kick pressure is something every character has to deal with, it's really dumb.
General tip with Cody, if you want to learn to punish something try crouching short. It's 3 frame, has amazing range, so it can punish a lot of things.
Good luck

Just so you know, cody's backthrow is a free safejump against characters without a 3-frame reversal (i.e. shotos) if you just hold upforward and come in with j.hk.
