This is beautiful, but it's not Salome. 1) according to the story Salome is gradually removing veils until she lies naked 2) I see here a gourgeous belly dancer dancing beautifully, but I don't see a girl from Herod kingdom who wants prophet's head on the platter 3) you cannot really expect an opera singer to be able to dance like this.... 4) Salome doesn't take place in an arabic country.
actually, according to the Bible Salome does not gradually remove veils, but just dances seductively.. I have not read Oscar Wilde's play, so maybe there this happens, but it is in no way rooted in Ancient biblical stories, the 7 veil dance..
@dinavienna I haven't read Oscar Wilde play either, but I just googled for dance of the seven veils, and from that it appears the play calls for removing veils (I could be wrong). it was also done by Rita Haiworth in "Salome" movie. Regardless, in opera it's the music that tells the story, and removing the veils is what R Strauss intended when he wrote the music. Anyhway, this dancer cannot sing Salome, and no opera singer singing Salome can dance like this and then still have energy to sing.
hi there! yes, now I understand what you mean.. yes it would be very unlikely an opera singer is trained in the art of Arabic or oriental dance :) maybe some day we have an Arabic opera diva she may be able to, but yes, when singing opera they cannot move a lot (although Anna Netrebko did crazy things in La Traviata some years ago. she was hanging upside down and singing!!)
To be honest even Rita Hayworth, who is a great dancer, cannot dance the oriental way at all!!!! take care
the dance of the seven veils is a Western invention.. (from an Oscar Wilde play on Salome, who is a biblical-historical Jewish, and not Arab royal lady in Ancient times).
she does really good viel work

If a beautiful woman dancing like that doesn't make a man feel like a man I don't know what will....She's fantastic.

This how 'Dance of the 7 veils' is suppose to be performed!
It is all about seduction!
Normally, I adore Opera's, but REFUSE to see Strause or any other theatical interpretation that can't get the 'Arabic influence' right.
For me, being Turkish, when they exclude any Arabic dance, it is like a 'slap' in the face!
