@enzytebob You sure? Lead singer Richard Ashcroft wrote the song in early 1995. He briefly mentioned it in an interview at the time, relating it to his drug usage: "There's a new track I've just written [...] It goes 'the drugs don't work, they just make me worse, and I know I'll see your face again'. That's how I'm feeling at the moment. They make me worse, man. But I still take 'em. Out of boredom and frustration you turn to something else to escape."[1]
@canninmac87 From the same article: "The exact meaning of the song is unclear, but it is generally believed that composer Richard Ashcroft wrote the song in response to the death of his father, and is also thought to be influenced by his relationship with his wife. Ashcroft said in an interview, "to me, it's a lovesong".
@canninmac87 The lyrics of the original demo varied from the eventual album track, with the main line changing from "They just make me worse" to "They just make you worse", as Ashcroft attempted to lyrically put across different points of view in the song; "They make you/me worse" refer to the medication his father was taking (which prolonged his life, but inflicted suffering at the same time). So it really depends on how you interpret the song.
@enzytebob Richard Ashcroft wrote the song , relating it to his drug usage: "There's a new track I've just written. It goes 'the drugs don't work, they just make me worse, and I know I'll see your face again'. That's how I'm feeling at the moment. They make me worse, man. But I still take 'em. Holy crap. I smoke weed, and I would not want to have cancer without it....my uncle smoked with me when he had colon cancer, and it helped him so very much, he was able to laugh and eat a bit and reminisce...sometimes the (pharmaceutical) drugs DON'T work. ~shrug~ You get comfortable however you can at the point my uncle was at. Peace, all.
Actually, smoking is the worst thing you can do with colon cancer. Oh yeah, red processed meat is also bad for cancer. Also, Drugs actually alter the electrical neurons in your brain, i.e. They kill your brain.
This is about his dad who was dying of I think cancer, this isnt about pot or drugs like that, its about the medical drugs that where used on his dad.
so many people dont wanna legalize weed, like beer makers, tobacco giants, christians, republicans, pot dealers, the kkk, people who've never done drugs, and all the moraly "supieor". All I gotta say is fuck them all.
Um...wait a minute. I thought this song was about a relative who was dying of cancer -- the cancer treatment drugs weren't working. Anyone else heard that?
I drink when I get the chance, and I smoke weed almost everyday. Every person goes through alot in life and drugs and alcohol is the scapegoat from your pains in life, to be free! We're not children anymore, adult life is a BIG responsibility you never knew will be so hard unless your filthy rich but even at that the most rich and famous has problems too. Its hard to enjoy life with the many crazy experiences one goes through. But just live on and do your best to love yourself.
I must say...I used to be a pot head... Driving is totally possible for an avid habitual pot smoker.. Its not even a problem its like driving sober. If driving for the first 10 times your smoking, I wouldnt recommend it.
every situation where someone gets hurt? say you get in a car wreak dose that make honda responsible for your recklessness? if you were to cut off a finger when you were cutting wood with a saw dose that make the saw company a mechant of death? if a baby was to drown in a bathtub is the water comapny evil? no poeple need to stop looking for scapegoats and start taking responibility for thier actions, its like the idea of obama, obama might provide hope but the one who will provide change is you.
honestly you cant blame a company for you being an alcoholic, thats whats wrong with the country these days lazy people always looking for a scapegoat to blame their problems on, the same rule applies for ciggerette companies and yes even drug dealers, if you took crack on your own free will its your fault for getting addicted to an addictive substance no the guy who sold it to you, if you can blame hurting yourself when your drunk on the alcohol companies than why wouldnt that rule apply in
I've lost both parents to terminal illnesses and after a while the drugs did not work.
I also have a 55 year old friend who has been suffering from alcohol addiction since she was 13. At times she can't walk, doesn't eat, doesn't wash, wets her pants, forgets to feed her animals. It is sad. Alcohol is a drug, a legal one, and they give you the stupid "suggestion" to drink responsibly, so they will be in the clear.
and because it fucks you alot more than weed will. even if you're stone dout of your mind, you're still functional. you can walk and think, you just can't see too well.
when you're DRUNK, you are totally useless. can barely even stand up straight, your mind is gone.
Yeah and people should drink responsibly it's not the alcohol companies who should be held responsible but instead the consumer to know when to call it quits. I know people who are alcoholics but I dont blame the alcohol companies like you are "suggesting"
What else can companies do? Control how much alcohol you drink magically? Give me a break, it's the consumers responsibility so it's their fault if they become alcoholics.
i feel ya man my older brother has striggled with coke has whole life. i watched it destroy him he has stole from me my other brothers my dad has dad our mom, all of my friends all of his friends just for a quick fix. shit i even know how to rock it up cause of him. i did it with him numerous times, but i never spent money on it but that doesnt make it any better. now he is in prison been there a year got two to go. he has been in the joint about half his life. and man it hurts i watched it all

It's such a depressing song, but I can't help but listen to it because it's also a very good song
He's talking about antidepressants, mood stabilizers, sedatives and the like. They just don't work; in fact make you worse. I know this from first-hand experience. My life was perfect, I'd never been suicidal until I became dependent on Psychiatric medication.
It could be any addictive drug, really. at some point drugs stop being fun, they stop doing what they once did for you, they take hold and what once made you feel good and took away your problems (covered them up) now becomes the problem.
Actually, he said (10 years ago, mind you, when MTV was still THE way to get such info) this was more about life-sustaining medicines for terminal illness... antidepressants vary a huge deal. For the last 10 years, I've been treating neurological and psychological illnesses. Drugs are my VERY last resort, mind you.
(and before someone flames me, my first lines of treatment involve BIOFEEDBACK to help people COPE by CONTROLLING THEIR OWN CONDITIONS NATURALLY. It's expensive and time consuming-half of major insurers don't cover it for anything but ADHD-so there IS the REAL problem with overuse of drugs. I'm also PRO-CHOICE on euthanasia and do NOT wish to prolong life when the patient is ready to go, as was the case for this song;I find it cruel to fear death so much as to force life upon the helplessly sick
