@Msholly1ful Yes. As long as any mobile device is turned on to flight mode before take-off then you can use it inflight. The crew will remind you during the boarding process. To confirm, there is no internet connection onboard when in flight on Air New Zealand international services.

Sorry for the delay. Yes when flying on NZ1 LHR-LAX-AKL you do need to clear US Immigration. So need a US Visa or be travelling on the US Visa Waiver Program. No need to pick up luggage if checked all the way. If you are changing flight numbers at LAX i.e. NZ1 to NZ5, you also need to clear US Customs and pick up your luggage.
