It lit up as soon as it made connection with earth because it had completed a circuit to the ground. Electrical current will always travel the path of least resistance. And as such, this circuit opened a "gate", like creating a superhighway straight to the ground. Allowing all other positively charged atoms to transfer Electrons down this superhighway. The electrons move through the atoms in atmosphere, creating a positive charge that needs to find earth in order to equalise it's potential.

When it light completly up at 0:10 it made contact with an object becuz when a lighting strike get close enough to (lets say) a tree the top of the tree gives off another lightning bolt to connect with the one in the sky and when they both connect then it lights up completly and brightly.., amazing huh?
Its so amazing how mother nature produces these electrical currents making lightning strikes and this man was lucky to get pictures of it!! outstanding!
