Favorite song from Hunchback. So powerful, creepy and intense. I love how her fire apparition starts off dancing provocatively, then next time we see her is writhing and screaming in pain at being burned at the stake.
one of my favorite Disney movies growing up. Now i see the lust and damnation in it. Disney you now how to make thinks fly over a 5 year olds head. I always loved Esmeralda :) She is so pretty.
9-year-old me: "ooh, he must be the bad guy! now he's gonna sing about his plot... he totally wants to throw pretty Esmeralda in jail!"
Present me: "NOW I get it. He's some stuffy old religious judge who's never gotten laid, and he's freaking out because he wants to bone Esmeralda. He's going to give her a choice: forced sex with him, or burn in hell."
Though in the actual story of hunchback of notre dame none of the main characters live. esmeralda is hanged, quasimodo pushes claude frollo of the cathedral, and quasimodo dies of starvation.
And the award for Most Fucked Up Disney Villain goes to...JUDGE CLAUDE FROLLO! This movie is amazing, though. This song is creepy, but the lyrics are amazing.
Oddly enough, this song makes me feel bad for him; he's practically begging god (or mary, i saw this a long time ago and wasn't quite clear on which branch of christianity he was part of) for help because he's struggling with his feelings. He honestly thinks he's doing the right thing, he's Disney's Knight Templer
I can't believe I watched this when I was little and all I reckoned was that Frollo wanted to either marry Esmeralda or burn her at the stake. Lust? Damnation? Straight over my 6 year-old head.
@Corristo89 they are singing " Mea Culpa" which is Latin for "My fault", since Frolo was claiming that it wasn't his fault that he was attracted to Esmeralda, and thus commiting a "sin"
I remember cheering on Simba when he fought Scar. I remember booing at Ursela, when she took Ariel's voice. I remember fighting the Huns side-by-side with Mulan. I remember the wind through my hair, running by Pocahontas. I remember being locked in the Beast's castle. I remember laughing and having fun with Mickey and his friends. I don't remember watching Teen Drama on stupid Disney Channel. Copy and paste this to all your favorite Disney Videos and let's start a revolution. Disney FOREVER
never understood this scene as a child(actually the movie itself was pretty confusing as a child) my older cousins wuld always talk among themselves saying how frollo was horny for esmeralda and id be like huh? wen i got to my teens i watched this movie again(after not seeing it in years) and omg i was AMAZED this movie is truly my fav disney movie not many ppl appreciate this master piece
Frollo is probably the most evil AND human Disney villain. Here,he admits his confusion and even hypocricy momentarily, desperate to make a human desire into a sin. He is this complex here, imagine if they stuck to the original. Thats the part that makes little sense. He has all this power in the film cause he is a judge n minister,logical..but not bound to celibacy as the compassionate-turn-sinister archdeacon Frollo in the novel. Frollo is weak, strong, smart n brutal. RIP Tony Jay.We salute you.
He's in some ways- yeah, he's evil, but he's not completely evil, as you can see where he's coming from at times- he's like the book character in that way
They're not singing in French, they're singing in Latin, and "Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa" translates to "My fault. My greatest fault". In French, "coulpa" more closely means "guilt".
It's rather interesting that in the midst of all these golden age movies with relatively harmless children's plots and the like, THIS came out. I wonder what motivated them to do Hunchback in the first place?
@chicoboi500 Most Disney's GOOD films are actually based of the Brothers Grimm, and other artist's books. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, was a book written in 1830 by a author of the name Victor Hugo. Disney than came, and turned it into.. Some kids movie.
@dog2man1994 Say what you will about the movie. But Its the only disney movie, or kids movie for that matter, to deal with themes of LUST and DAMNATION.

@quangduy9x Frollo caught her afterall and then tied her to her pyre. "I can save you from the flames of this world and the next, choose me or the fire", he said. But Esmeralda refused so Frollo set her pyre on fire. But in the end Quasimodo saves her just in time.
It is kinda annoying how many of todays villians are evil just to be evil. They are like "I'm so evil, and now i will to evil things" but not Frollo. He is not really evil, he is just.. confused. He is fighting himself, but takes it out on others, for his own cause. He is not a villian, he is just a god-fearing man that is in love, but he calls sin.
Truly evils ones can be great too, but Frollo is an interesting case because he's very human. He wants to be pure and righteous, yet can't deny his natural urges, something he's likely repressed all his life. It's a shame that Disney never went with another such villain, someone being consumed by baser instincts.
@Farvai0 I disagree, he was a very unpleasant character long before Esmerelda got his...fire burning. He perverted religion to become his tool of oppression and fear, he was happy to burn a family alive if it got him Phoebus, he used his faith to justify his terrible acts to his own conscience
@Zeruel3 I agree with that. He is evil because he think what he does is not evil. He dont do it because he knows he is evil, but because he think what he does isnt evil, and that is a sign of you being a psycopath, and kinda evil.
@Farvai0 yeah,,, i miss when disney had so deep characters,,, they have had some come a little close to this level,,, but they just don't seem to be able to keep up with themselves :/
@Farvai0 You are right about most things but he IS a villain though. Misguided and god-fearing but a bad guy none the less. His actions have meaning to,not just what he believes.
@Farvai0 Actually, you're wrong. He is evil. He is probably the most evil disney villain because he thinks he is righteous. The most evil acts in the world have often times been committed by perverting the teachings of the world of god to justify their own sins. Though I agree with you that he is the deepest villain.
@Farvai0 i agree with you that Frollo is a very deep character but their is much more too it. he isnt as much confused as he is torn between choosing righteous devotion over his lust. during this he has givin the ultimatum that if he cannot have her she will die, he refers to it as a sin because he is not in love, but it is of pure lust that he feels is not his fault. "I'll find her if i have to burn down paris" bro honestly just wants her for a night or week, depends on what hes into.
@Mirani2 well, yes and no... the only time he lets it known to anyone that he will stop everything if he will have her, is too her and at the end. this is basically putting up a front of a fully religious man to the people of paris while Esmerelda is really the only one who truly knows WHY he is doing everything. the only thing Quasimodo is aware of is that he is wanting to protect his friend and his "Master" is insane at this point.
@Farvai0 are you serious? This man is evil! Even if he did some of the things he did in the name of god he proves his soul is rotten in this song. He does not love he LUSTS and even says "Choose me or your pyre" and "and let her taste the fires of hell or let her be mine and mine alone!" Maybe to you forcing a woman to either have sex with you or die is just a confused man fighting himself but to me that is a man corrupt and insane with power.
@Glamdring07 Ok, you are right. He is evil. But he dont do the evil things for his own earthly gain(not money, not power) but for his soul. He feels he has no choice. It is a real dillema, and it is what makes this character and scene so epic. He is doing evil things to satify what he thinks is a curse, but really is his own lust. And to do this, he commits sins much worse then the sins he wants to remove.
@Farvai0 I know what you mean he is obsessed with a Gypsy, something that is really bad, and religion has confused him I'm glad someone else sees this :)
@I0LOVE0AMY0ROSE It's Gaston, and the cool thing about him is that he really could have been the hero of Beauty and the Beast. He was good looking, everyone liked him, he was fun and energetic. So when Gaston became the villain, it was a bit surprising and very interesting. It also made him more human. I'm not saying that one villain is better than the other, but Disney knows how to write a villain and friggin' good villain songs.
@JJHdisney hahahahaha ur comment made me really laugh and remember how my cousins would always say that frollo was horny for esmeralda here and i would be like huh whats that lol but im 18 now i totally get it now lol
@Nacso69 I think he's struggling with lust though he's presumably taken a vow of chastity. He wants to possess her. She actually disgusts him, so I wouldn't call that love.
Anyone ever thought of doing this song with Shere Kahn (since Tony Jay voices him in the second film) and another big cat character; maybe Nala or Kiara?
Anyone ever thought of doing this song with Shere Kahn (since Tony Jay voices him in the second film) and another big cat character; maybe Nala or Kiara?
@ieatpilli no I agree. Disney's movies haven't been awesome. If they were they wouldn't need to release old movies in 3d and make movies like little mermaid 3...
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is, in my opinion, the most meaningful yet underrated classic Disney movie. I love how it shows that religion can be a pure, sanctuary, yet it can also be something dark and cruel.
@LadyLimstella OMFG finally! i dont think anyone save yourself and I and a handful of others what the latin lyrics are! they really emphasize the song...theyre really missing out.

My favourite character in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is the guy who says "Minister Frollo" in this video.

Okay, this is a great song. The actor who sang this did an amazing job. But seriously, how did this not get a PG rating??

WHY IS THIS SONG SO GOOD.

And to think this entire song is about how Frollo wants to bone Esmeralda. Creepy much?

Wow, I never realize that this movie was so...dark. ._.
Hopefully, 'Frozen' will be this dark, seeing as it has a dark plot and all (Please don't make it like the Little Mermaid Disney ;n;)

Say what you will about the live-action Disney movies, but there is a reason they are the best animation studio on the planet, this is proof of that.

God, he is just such a deep character.
Farvai0 2 weeks ago 107
@Farvai0 not evil? missed the part where he wants to burn down a house with civies still in them?
he's pure evil m8, simple as that :D
schwarzfalk 2 weeks ago
@Farvai0 He's interesting, deep, and conflicted, but he is also quite evil.
EmperorZ19 2 weeks ago
@Farvai0 The best kind of villains are the ones who never think that they are. The one's who believe they are doing right.
DjembeDjam 2 weeks ago
@DjembeDjam
Truly evils ones can be great too, but Frollo is an interesting case because he's very human. He wants to be pure and righteous, yet can't deny his natural urges, something he's likely repressed all his life. It's a shame that Disney never went with another such villain, someone being consumed by baser instincts.
Darkman9000 2 weeks ago
@Farvai0 I disagree, he was a very unpleasant character long before Esmerelda got his...fire burning. He perverted religion to become his tool of oppression and fear, he was happy to burn a family alive if it got him Phoebus, he used his faith to justify his terrible acts to his own conscience
Zeruel3 2 weeks ago
@Zeruel3 I agree with that. He is evil because he think what he does is not evil. He dont do it because he knows he is evil, but because he think what he does isnt evil, and that is a sign of you being a psycopath, and kinda evil.
Farvai0 2 weeks ago
@Farvai0 yeah,,, i miss when disney had so deep characters,,, they have had some come a little close to this level,,, but they just don't seem to be able to keep up with themselves :/
megamage911 1 week ago in playlist Favorite videos
@Farvai0 You are right about most things but he IS a villain though. Misguided and god-fearing but a bad guy none the less. His actions have meaning to,not just what he believes.
Sumumabitch78 1 week ago
@Farvai0 Actually, you're wrong. He is evil. He is probably the most evil disney villain because he thinks he is righteous. The most evil acts in the world have often times been committed by perverting the teachings of the world of god to justify their own sins. Though I agree with you that he is the deepest villain.
darkwulf23 1 week ago 4
@Farvai0 i agree with you that Frollo is a very deep character but their is much more too it. he isnt as much confused as he is torn between choosing righteous devotion over his lust. during this he has givin the ultimatum that if he cannot have her she will die, he refers to it as a sin because he is not in love, but it is of pure lust that he feels is not his fault. "I'll find her if i have to burn down paris" bro honestly just wants her for a night or week, depends on what hes into.
fujiwaranosai25 1 week ago 2
@fujiwaranosai25 I think he also feels like excusing his lust by saying he's righteous
Mirani2 1 week ago
@Mirani2 well, yes and no... the only time he lets it known to anyone that he will stop everything if he will have her, is too her and at the end. this is basically putting up a front of a fully religious man to the people of paris while Esmerelda is really the only one who truly knows WHY he is doing everything. the only thing Quasimodo is aware of is that he is wanting to protect his friend and his "Master" is insane at this point.
fujiwaranosai25 1 week ago
@Farvai0 are you serious? This man is evil! Even if he did some of the things he did in the name of god he proves his soul is rotten in this song. He does not love he LUSTS and even says "Choose me or your pyre" and "and let her taste the fires of hell or let her be mine and mine alone!" Maybe to you forcing a woman to either have sex with you or die is just a confused man fighting himself but to me that is a man corrupt and insane with power.
Glamdring07 1 week ago
@Glamdring07 Ok, you are right. He is evil. But he dont do the evil things for his own earthly gain(not money, not power) but for his soul. He feels he has no choice. It is a real dillema, and it is what makes this character and scene so epic. He is doing evil things to satify what he thinks is a curse, but really is his own lust. And to do this, he commits sins much worse then the sins he wants to remove.
Again, you are rigth. He is evil.

@Farvai0 what about a good old fashioned Anti-Villain? their ambitions are good, but their methods of obtaining them are less than stellar.

I0LOVE0AMY0ROSE 2 weeks ago 2
@I0LOVE0AMY0ROSE It's Gaston, and the cool thing about him is that he really could have been the hero of Beauty and the Beast. He was good looking, everyone liked him, he was fun and energetic. So when Gaston became the villain, it was a bit surprising and very interesting. It also made him more human. I'm not saying that one villain is better than the other, but Disney knows how to write a villain and friggin' good villain songs.

Nacso69 2 weeks ago 4
@Nacso69 I think he's struggling with lust though he's presumably taken a vow of chastity. He wants to possess her. She actually disgusts him, so I wouldn't call that love.
thatnerdygirl 2 weeks ago
@thatnerdygirl I never said "they are full of love" but "he's full of love". His passion is the key element that turns him into a evil character.

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is, in my opinion, the most meaningful yet underrated classic Disney movie. I love how it shows that religion can be a pure, sanctuary, yet it can also be something dark and cruel.
