this is complex movie..to me a big part of this mnovie..was the policeman.sticking to uch to the book instead of being rational and paying attention to situation...and the ppl who chose to live there sticking it to a government official lolollol
Mighty, just stfu! There is freedom of religion in the UK- have you forgotten that??? Burned offerings are a time-honoured way of worshipping the gods.
Crikey- is the accommodation that bad??? Or is it the screams of the sacrificed that drive them away? If the latter- try charging these ingrates money to watch- I always find they appreciate what they have to pay for.
If you see the first part of the longer version - where Srgt Howie's younger subordinates are talking about him - they are saying he is uptight, Virgin, thinks he knows it all.
I have mixed feelings about Srgt Howie... I now like him, think his instincts are good, he wants to protect a young girl who he thinks is in danger of being murdered. What's wrong with that? Also, he is supremely confident that he, and he alone, unarmed can fight and win for good and he has God on his right side.
I want to see an authentic remake of 'The Wicker Man' as intended, from Schaffer's original screenplay. Ewan MacGregor as Sergeant Howie. Billy Connolly for Lord Summerisle...
Christopher Lee is still alive and kicking, he could play the part again, even betta perhaps, and as I have understood he is not quite happy with all the butchering the film suffered(a mere shadow of the original version) so he could do it again for free...
I'm pretty sure Edward Woodward played Howie as "uptight", he even had his policeman's uniform made a size too small to keep him ramrod stiff. And Howie certainly shows in the film (Director's Cut especially) that he is intolerant of pagans (islanders) and non believers (other policeman and postman).
Too right! And hey, if you take him on his own terms, maybe he WON. His last words are "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!" - an exact echo of Joan of Arc's last words. Shame his chosen church doesn't approve of canonization!

the world's governments should make a policy of sterilizing pagans like that. if they cant be rehabilitated then they should be sterlized and forced to live out their ugly perverted and orcish lives in some arid wasteland away from decent and polite folk
Yeah, burning Christians in giant wicker men as a sacrifice to Pagan Gods is a real pain in the arse. You can't get away from the bloody torchbearers 'round where I live, and the price of wicker has gone through the roof!Someone should put a stop to it.
numberstation, I do sympathise. In my village, we've totally run out of virgins, except for the littlies, but the gods won't accept them as sacrifices. We're at our wits' end . Could you spare us a virgin or two, if you have any? In exchange, you can have all our accumulated wicker.
In the next chapter the son of this Christian policeman, who (didn't show it in the original version) gave way to temptation and had a go with it with WIlliow
The son returns 20 years later and Christopher Lee is a border line insane old Lord, the crops have been bad and the Christian Son returns to convert the Heathens....
But, I was presenting a revision - where Howie died, but did not die a Virgin and his seed, carried to term by Willow - willow banished from the Island for no longer performing the Pagan sexual right of passage for the young Heathens, she goes to the mainland, raises her son as a devout Christian, but a different type of Christian than the up-tight, close minded father/police man, the son would return knowing the whole story but posing as another sacrifice to be.
itsareligion, that's highly imaginitive! Are yuo writing a sequel? I have seen an online sequel which presented Lord Summerisle as bisexual....somehow, I just couldn't see the randy old goat getting into males, but anyway, if you are writing, good luck with it.
Thank you for the compliment. Perhaps I will write this sequel - if only as a script. In my sequel, the Christian side makes a strong comeback and comes back to this strange and magical Heathen island in the form of a young ~19, very handsome son of Willow and the martyred/sacrificed Sgt. It will be another one on one, man to man face off with Christopher Lee - Lord Summerisle - only Christopher Lee is old and has lost some of his power, the young Christian is young and in the know - he wins.
Wot?

I always thought that a remake would have worked well with Ewan McGregor as being a younger version of Woodward.

Ewan looks a little like Edward. Your idea sure is better than the remake that actually came to fruition...

This film works so well on all levels. Just when you think you have understood it all, there is a new spin.
For me - Sgrt Howie, he is the key figure not Lord Summerisle.
For those who say that Srgt Howie is uptight, intolerant, the heavy... I say that he is great.
It is the entire Pagan Island against Srgt. Howie, OK he loses, but he puts up a great fight.
Just one man, a no nonsense Scottish Christian police officer, unarmed ready to do his duty.
Good show Srgt Howie.

I don't thing Sgt Howie is meant to be uptight and intolerant. He's meant to be upright and incorruptable.

Actually the makers of the movie always thought of it as a musical. The soundtrack of the movie is essential to the story.
