Chris, A local collector is trying to sell me a Supposedly universal Super System Card 3.0 Now I know there was a US one and a Japanese one but have you ever heard of one that plays on both? I think he is on crack.
@canndd2000 You cannot play any Super CDs with the old card, no. I don't know how many...but considering how much US versions go for on Ebay, I have to assume there aren't many (it appears the PC-Engine version is a lot more readily available). Thanks for watching!!
You said you can tell if its and American Super system card if you notice the turbografx 16 label is on the front of the Cd case But what about if there is no Cd case Then how would you be able to tell if its the real deal besides trying to start up the system and try it out.How can we know if its the real super system card? I wouldn't want to get ripped off
@canndd2000 If it doesn't have the case and manual, I would make sure to check the "rear" of the card itself. It says "TurboGrafx-16" on the back (where the other one, and I can't confirm this, probably says PC-Engine on it).
I whould've bought this upgrade card for my turbo cd if the magazines at the time did'nt hammer our skulls about how fast the Duo was compared to the old cd... at that time I didn't realise that it was in milliseconds :P Years later I miss this one from a collector standpoint but not being a completionist collector it's no biggie. Would be still cool to own but not at today's prices... Nice review of an obscure piece of gaming history!
@Polywanacraka Ha ha. Yeah, they really did hammer it. I was such a "sucker" for anything underdog I think....so, I knew I would be the ONLY one with this upgrade in probably my entire state (ha ha!)> :)
Thanks for watching and commenting as always my friend!
@Solis4Champ No, you need to have a US 3.0 system card (unless you want to pick yourself up a PC-Engine converter, that is...then you can use a PC-Engine Super System Card). :)
I can't believe you still have your coupon book. I thought that that was only included in the Turbo Duo Set.
By the way, how can you stand to toss your stuff around like that, on to hard floors? Do you have extra system cards and controllers that you just use for props in videos? Aren't you worried about damaging parts of your collection?
As for the System Cards, they contained updated BIOS and were used to boot CD media and provides functions for software to access CD hardware through a standardized interface (via the HuCard). Later revisions of the System Card a.k.a Super System Card expands the RAM available for the CD-ROM unit to 256 KB when including the existing built in DRAM.
The Arcade Card's contained the same BIOS as Super System Card's but MUCH more RAM. 16 megabit (Arcade Card Duo) and 17 megabit (Arcade Card Pro)!
The whole "Megabit" thing was HUGE back in the day and was used even for Sega Master System titles, and sooooo many people confused it for megabyte! 2 Megabit = 262kb (kilobyte) which is about 1 quarter of a full 1 megabyte. I can remember the Super NES having titles as large as 32 megabits which equals about 4 megabytes which was HUGE for a home based console for the casual gamer. Hardcore gamers such as those with Neo Geo's had a max of a whopping 716 Megabit which is around 94 megabytes!
What game would you say looked best with just the regular card. Just want to get a idea of how must of a difference the Super System Card boost the system.
Pretty good review. BTW, I take it that the Two CD System Chips (2.0 and 3.0) also serve as memory cards for games to save data? Never owned any of the CD unit to know myself.
@InAnimateGamer Yes. In the episode where I talk about the CD-ROM (in case you're interested), I believe I cover the internal memory of the CD system. The CD system had a memory backup inside of it (if you didn't get the CD system, you could buy a Turbo Booster PLUS, which also did this). Ha ha....ah, the complex web of it all. :)
@hobocamptheater I do have the AC. Yeah. I will definitely mention it in a Turbo Views Extra someday when I get to the PC-Engine side of the collection (and probably review a game or two in the Import series). Thanks for watching, as always! :)
@spida1a I believe the more expensive one is the Arcade Card Pro designed for the original PC-Engine CD-ROM² and Super CD-ROM² and is needed to play most games including Strider Hiryu which is unplayable without the card. It also enhances some CD game like 3x3 Eyes which enhances the opening cinemas over using the original CD-Rom cards. Let's see the Turbo-Duo stuff.
@spida1a Hey. I played Fighting Street on my Virtual Console, and when it was booting up, it said the same exact Super CD-Rom Bio. It had no load times, but it didn't help the controls... I had fun with Fighting Street, but the controls turned me off, aside from the weak voice program.
Love your reviews man. I found the 4in1 disc in a bargain bin at a factory liquidation store called... yes, Hudson's Treasure Hunt in '98. It was in a bin full of music CDs. I bought it for $2.00, even though I had a TG-16. Possible correction: I am pretty sure it was a Turbo Duo pack in. It was just the CD in a jewel case in shrink-wrap. There were no manuals in the case. Most likely, they were in a baggie within the system box. So, bought a Turbo Duo after wards around 2000 from TZD new.
I got the game one too. but my gates of thunder was bad. They sent me another one without even asking for the old one back! but i keep hearing you say there is a secret game in there (bomer man?) How in the world do you open it up. ?????I dont remember how i even got it. i do remember after time store had no more games so i had to send away for my games.
Sadly I know too that there are a few Duo games that don't take advantage of the Super CD technology: Super Air Zonk and Camp Calfornia I'm looking at you! Cool vid man.
@kiman2 The only other chip game I can remember that had that small "hump" on it was Populous for the PC Engine. I think the Arcade Card Pro had it aswell.
interesting Never owned one of the those consoles not really surprising here in the UK its was about 6th place in terms of hardware same looks like it might be worth getting an import
@spida1a I was younger at the time. I dont think I even really knew what it was per say but I knew it was a sick deal and had to have it. I had only a couple turbo play mags but I dont know if it was mentioned in the ones I had. Another awesome review dude.
The sad thing is that there were so many great Super CD games that never came out over here because the TG16 was already on it's deathbed in the US. Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, and Forgotten Worlds were among the best we got here.
I had the PC Engine version back then and bought this upgrade for one reason--to play Dracula-X: Rondo of Blood. It was one of the most expensive purchases I made to play a game (just a notch below Street Fighter 2 dash with 6-button pad).
@azmune Castlevania was the first game EVER that imported back in about 1993 / 94. I did whatever I could to snag that one. You know? It was expensive and HARD to find....but I did it. Ha ha. Thanks for watching!
@lukemorse1 Hey, thanks my friend. Great chatting with you on the pod-cast the other day. Can't wait to hear how boring my segment of it was....ha ha. :)
Wasn't Camp California a Super CD game? I remember I really wanted that game but I didn't know how to get the system and was too young anyway to come up with the money. I hope you review Camp California one day to see if it was even worth purchasing.
@MFields2178 Yes, C Cali was. I played it very little back in the day...that would be a good one to pickup again (to see WHY I played it very little). Hee hee.
I just subbed about a few days ago. I'm sad to say that I haven'tt find you until now. Although your face looks familiar. Maybe I saw a vid of yours a while back and it wasn't interesting enough for me to look at anymore of yours. Either way, the vid I saw a few days ago caught my attention. :)
Oh shit, I just noticed the auction you showed at 4:20 IS the exact Super System Card I won! Now if I ever sell it I can label it "As seen on Turbo Views - pay me more" P.S. lol 420
...Also thanks for the tip on looking for the "turbografx16" logo on the CD case. I have been looking into buying a SuperSystemCard and that detail you pointed out really helped, considering I don't have a converter yet.
@VideoBox100 It says TurboGrafx on the back also....and the PC-Engine one says PC-Engine on the front. But, most sellers don't really show very detailed photos and the only way you can see it from afar is that little rectangular box. You know? Ha ha. :)
@spida1a ya maybe it's from my being a product of my generation but I really enjoy that Japanese wackiness a lot of old games (especially the ones for Turbografx) have which is largely missing in this era of gritty space marines
I was wondering when you were going to do this video, Chris! I got my SSC last year CIB for about $58, which my good friend Pat from Pompey Parsons tracked down for me. Anyway, down to the lavish praises; Chris, you are the man, your videos rule, blah, blah, blah. lol Really though, keep up the great work. ;)
You've got "Power Plus!" lol. I have the PCE Super System Card thingy but the CD-ROM doesn't work. It had a stripped gear inside witch I changed but it still doesn't work. It's just dead I don't even think it tried to spin the CD when it turns on. So the Turbo-Duo has the Super System Card built in? Nice.
@MN12BIRD Yeah, it has the SS card already. Which is quite nice. The Duo has its share of problems today (mainly a transistor that cuts off red book audio....but it can be repaired). But, that original CDROM drive man....they're always messed up. ha ha. :)
Thank you for the upload!!! That was a very impressive 3.0 Hu-Card!! It was an extra built-in Ram like the N64 did!!!! GOd! That Turbo 16 was ALREADY a computer custom bios updatable revolutionized already!!!
I worked at Toys R Us back then but unfortunately never got my hands on a TurboDuo. Their policy at the time was that newer models wouldn't be sold until the older model stock was exausted. The company view was that the Duo was identical the the TG16 and CD combined. The older systems never sold out so the Duo's were eventually shipped back with the remaining TG16 stock. Sadder still was they released the Duo games to the floor, and of course they never worked so they were always returned.
I think if you had the turbo duo, you did not need this card, i had a turbo duo, and did not need any upgrades, you also got free games, including gates of thunder etc. I dont know if you needed the card, for the jap, duo.
Man, you really are into the Turbo lifestyle, aren't you. It's good to see someone that is so passionate about a system make such great vids about it. Great job once again!
I still have that same promotional VHS video. I also have one for Lords of Thunder. Whenever you get along to do the Lords of Thunder review you have to play clips from that vid.
wow! now that takes me back. I remember reading about this. My friend was the only one that i knew that had a turbo graphix 16 and pretty muck he was pretty up to date with it. I don't know if he ever got this chip but this brought back some good memories. Thanks for posting.
This video was a great treat. That magazine ad that described the two ways to order the Super System Card....maaaannnn. I wanted that sucker so bad, bitd. And the Duo?! *druel* hehe
I was always intrigued by the SSC and how it had galaxies/quasars as its label design. A strange, yet very cool choice.
Looking forward to "Extra" # 3 on the Turbo Duo. :)
At the time I thought my T-16 was so awesome and high tec, and especially the game cards and hell even today they look pretty cool when I show them to people!
If it makes you fell any better I would have been very jealous of you back in the day ;)
thanks for your feedback on the super system card

katsujinken10 1 year ago
@katsujinken10 Ha ha. Yeah, that's a messed up game. Cool though, you know? Thanks for watching!!
spida1a 1 year ago
@spida1a ya maybe it's from my being a product of my generation but I really enjoy that Japanese wackiness a lot of old games (especially the ones for Turbografx) have which is largely missing in this era of gritty space marines

Thanks again Chris!!!! Loved the old commercials clips..

I was wondering when you were going to do this video, Chris! I got my SSC last year CIB for about $58, which my good friend Pat from Pompey Parsons tracked down for me. Anyway, down to the lavish praises; Chris, you are the man, your videos rule, blah, blah, blah. lol Really though, keep up the great work. ;)

@TheMathius78 Ha ha. thanks and all that blah blah blah. :)
Take care!
spida1a 1 year ago
You've got "Power Plus!" lol. I have the PCE Super System Card thingy but the CD-ROM doesn't work. It had a stripped gear inside witch I changed but it still doesn't work. It's just dead I don't even think it tried to spin the CD when it turns on. So the Turbo-Duo has the Super System Card built in? Nice.
MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@MN12BIRD Yeah, it has the SS card already. Which is quite nice. The Duo has its share of problems today (mainly a transistor that cuts off red book audio....but it can be repaired). But, that original CDROM drive man....they're always messed up. ha ha. :)

Awesome video Chris! I was always curious to what the Super System Card is..thanks for showing :)

Sadder still was they released the Duo games to the floor, and of course they never worked so they were always returned.
magesfolly 1 year ago
I think if you had the turbo duo, you did not need this card, i had a turbo duo, and did not need any upgrades, you also got free games, including gates of thunder etc. I dont know if you needed the card, for the jap, duo.
squirm13 1 year ago
@squirm13 The Super System Card was built-in to the Turbo Duo. So you didn't need anything, right. Thanks for watching my friend, as always!
spida1a 1 year ago
if I heard right, if u get the TurboDuo, u dont need this card ?
NadrianATRS 1 year ago
@NadrianATRS Right, exactly. It had the Super Card already built-in to the system. Thanks for watching!

Who can argue with POWER PLUS? I mean, really.
