No white shark has died at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. All were released successfully after their planned temporary stays in the million gallon exhibit. You can look on the aquarium's website to see where each of them went home to. They were all released with satellite and pop-off tags tht show where they traveled after being released to the wild. Please get your facts straight. The aquarium is one of the finest marine conservation institutions in the world.
sharks are awsome but isnt the largest predetary shark in a aquarium um i dont know dangerous especially with people flashing there cameras continuesly if it wasent for the lights being off in there wow
scary! and the jaws theme in this one made it perfect and it sounded very creepy! that would be so creepy to see that shark in the dark! where did you find that version of the jaws theme?
Thats well scary in the dark looking at the shark, obviously its for protection so he cant see you etc but that would scare the living crap out of me lol
Its actually not scary at all, iv been there on holiday once, it may be dark, but because your allways with other people, its much more facinating rather then scary.
No way it does look amazing i have to say I just think the jaw's 3 movie has me scared when they were all underwater looking at the shark and she goes to attack them lol

it isnt that they cant survive in captivity. They are just hard to maintain. And when they do have them in captivity its mostly for research purposes or because they are sick or injured. Other wise they dont usually keep them.
So. Continuing from my last comment, I WILL give you a treasure chest of shark info that will blow your mind: It's a book (not too long) called "The Secret Life of Sharks" subtitled "A Leading Marine Biologist Reveals the Mysteries of Shark Behavior" written by A. Peter Klimley, Ph.D. If you don't want to buy it or can't find it in stores, order it. It's one of the best books I've ever read. I hope this was helpful!:)
Oh- by the way- we just released our most recent young white shark last Tuesday. He did great! (keep in mind that the majoriti of our animals are released, not hust white sharks.) It was just the right amount of time to have him. We put 2 satellite pop-off tags on him to temporarily see his travel patterns. I'm gonna miss that little guy! He was one of the cutest ones we've had.
I hope this was helpful. If you were able to trudge through my thick wall of comments and come out all right, go ahead and pat yourself on the back. If you want more info, feel free to contact me and talk it up. Peace. -Squilla
AMEN! A FELLOW WORKER! lol... i hate how we are limited to so many characters on here but people should always get their facts straight before slamming us because of what the news says. :]
Yes! Thank you so much! I actually joined YouTube mainly to be able to comment and help people get their facts straight. It's what is best for their own knowledge and appreciation, ad it's what's best for the Aquarium. I hope more people read my little "book" of coments I put up so they, like us, can know the sharks' story. :)
Sharks are apathetic, intelligent, opportunistic feeders with a miraculous internal compass of the seas of the world- like all fish! They have capabilities that make them the athletes of the sea (they are technically warm-blooded because of their fast metabolism) and have secrets we are waiting to discover about where they go and why. Let's live responsibly and let them live!
Ask any marine biologist, or look in any book detailing shark species. You'll find complex mating, traveling, and eating behaviors that vary greatly with the animal's age, gender, species, and location in the world. Such complex behaviors are enormous amounts of evidence that these are not only extremely intelligent among fishes, but this adaptation is a huge part of what makes them such efficient predators. You should show a lot more respect.
Show more respect? Why cause i asked a question? Mating, Traveling, and eating behaviors..No one has ever seen a White shark mate and traveling and eating behaviors can be classified under instinct, not intelligence.
My point is that those behaviors are COMPLEX, not just that they simply do those things. I didn't mean to offend you if I did, your question just looked like it had a kind of condescending tone to it . Sorry if I was wrong about you. But seriously- you need to be a little more open-minded. It's almost like you're refusing to believe the truth about sharks' intelligence. Again, sorry if I'm getting the wrong impression.
Noo Im not mad or anything Im just saying mating, traveling, and eating are instinctive behaviors, do you know of any different characteristics that would prove them intelligent. I'm not bein a an ass I'm just curious and I want to know, I've loved Sharks since i was a kid
Okay. Sorry about any hostility I may have showed you. I'm just really tired of people believing everything they see on TV and in movies like Jaws and thinking it's true. But I know you're not that kind of person. (which is great!) I could tell you all about the amazing behaviors that sharks and their cousins have that set them above and beyond other fish, but it would take pages of YouTube Comments space.
We have the same plan for the white shark we currently have, which is planned to be released around early springtime, if not a little earlier. He, too, is thriving, and is a wonderful way for visitors to connect to such a magnificent animal. I hope his prescence as one of the smallest fish in that million-gallon tank will show people sharks are not the kings of the ocean, nor are they ferocious.
Both juvenille white sharks went down to Tijuana immediately- less than 30 days! The tags were programmed to pop off after 30 days, and we collected the tags near the border of Mexico right on schedule.
The second had a very similar growth and behavioral progression during his stay with us, although he never had any territorial disputes. Our open-ocean animals (the ones in the 1.3 million gallon tank) are always given pop-off satellite tags when they are released, as scientists still know little about where most open-ocean animals go. After all, our planet is over 70% ocean!
This was a contributing factor in her release, but our final decision was based simply on how her size matched the maximum size for her transport vehicle to the ocean ( the 3000 gallon tank on the bed of a semi truck) and she was extremely healthy, having gained about 1.5 feet in length and a little over 100 pounds in weight and muscle mass. She was clearly ready to go home.
The only aggression we have ever witnessed in white sharks to their tankmates was when our first juvenille- the female- killed two soupfin sharks a few days apart from territorial problems. These animals do not encounter one another in the wild unless there is a storm, and she apparently thought they were getting too close for comfort.
We feed the other shark tankmates in the same fashion, although some are willing to be target fed from the outer perimeters of the tank as well. The hammerheads are especially gentle and are very good at this.
White shark feeding in the wild is very pooly documented, but with the amount of food we offer the animal and the amount of growth it recieves in such a short period of time, we have found our given amounts as suffucuent. White sharks are fed from a cotton string wrapped around the fillet attached to a pole held by an aquarist on the catwalk over the tank. We do this after the other animals have been fed.
The sea turtles and pelagic rays were moved to holding tanks either at the aquarium or in some of our nearby facilities, as they interferred with the target feedings of the white shark and sometimes the sunfish feedings. The white sharks are fed restaurant-quality Alaskan salmon and Pacific mackerel fillets usually at least once every other day (give or take. It's up to the bioigists.)
The other tankmates also enjoy the slightly warmer water, as the entire tank is supposed to show what the Monterey Bay would look like in an El Nino storm: these guys would show up. They include Pacific barracuda, Pacicic bonito, Pacific bluefin tuna, mahi-mahi, anchovies, yellowfin tuna, Pacific mackerel, black sea turtles, pelagic stingrays, ocean sunfish, Galapagos sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, and of course, the white shark.
The water is heated to 65 degrees Farenheit to simulate an increase in the Monterey Bay water temperature in a storm situation. The warmer temperature is ideal for a baby white shark- these little guys will not tolerate anything less than about 50 to 55 degrees farenheit.
The tank is maintained daily by professional scuba diver aquarists who siphon out fish waste from the bottom, collect eggs from our spawning bonitos, and wipe the acryllic walls and tiles in the back. We have surveillance cameras, security personel, guide volunteers, and veterinatians around the tank around the clock.
In the case of our white sharks, all have gained over a foot in length and a hundred pounds, and also healed scar tissue on their noses from being handled by fishermen when they were first caught/ before they ever even came to our facilities. The tank they live in is 1.3 million gallons with subdued lighting, raw seawater being pumped in 24/7 with massive protien skimmers for even more filtration, making top-quality water conditions.
White sharks are becoming increasingly endangered due to terrible fishing practices, so it is critical that every animal we have on exibit is returned to the wild healthy, happy, sane, and ready to contribute to the gene pool. We want nothing more than to re-introduce individuals that are in better condition than they were when we caught them or recieved them from other aquariums.
This is chiefly because the on-staff marine veterinarians have a transport vehicle that requires no more than 6.5 feet, 200 pounds of an animal in it. We would never keep an animal long enough for its physical or mental health to become compromised in any way. Remember, animals on exibit are NOT for enternatinment- they are ambassadors of their species that are around temporarily so they can be safely returned to the wild and contribute to the gene pool.
So- why do we release them in 4 to 8 months? We calculated that that amount of time is what it takes for a 5-foot individual to gain a foot and over a hundred pounds in weight. 6.5 feet, 200 pounds is our maximum size we want these animals to reach before acclimation and return to the wild.
We put the rotation schedule to hard work with the residents of the 1.3 million gallon tank the white shark lives in: We fully understand that keeping a migratory animal capable of covering hundreds of miles in a day is compromising. With that said, our white sharks never stay for more than 8 months. EVER. Our previous two white sharks thrived when they were with us- they gained over a foot in length over about 6 months in that tank, as well as gaining over a hundred pounds each.
All of the fish in the entire Aquarium are on a rotation basis. In other words, our on-staff biologists, aquarists, divers, husbandry officers, and security keep constant tabs on who has been newly acclimated, and who needs to return to the wild. Fish will stay anywhere from a few weeks to a few years, depending on the species' habitat, migratory habits, and breeding habits. Nobody stays forever.
Look, people. I'm an employee at the Monterey Bay Aquarium institute. This isn't some cheap aquarium- it's a world leader in marine research and preservation. The whole place was founded by the Packard family on the basis of conserving the oceans, and keeping wild animals wild.
Absolutely Sickening, MBA fed lies upon lies about this shark, This was not a success the shark was almost dead by the time they got rid of it, it had so many problems from running into the tank walls it went deaf blind and basically dead.
AHEM! I work at the Montery Bay Aquarium with these great animals and I can assure you 100% that these magnificant sharks were in no way mistreated or harmed. I hate to tell you but infact you are wrong with many of your facts. GWS do NOT eat 7 times a day, in fact they eat only about twice a WEEK. It is in fact NOT glass but acrilyc which is 13 and three quarters thick, not to keep the shark from breaking it but for the pressure of the water.
if you keep a GWS in captivity do they have a shorter life span? i thought they did....isn't it dangerous to feel such a dangerous shark? i admit it's really cool but how on earth did you manage to capture it?
No Great White has ever lived in Captivity for longer than half a year they either die within the first 2 weeks because they refuse to feed or the aquarium releases them, the Sharks are caught at a very young age, and capturing a five foot White isn't really that hard compared with a 21 foot White.
From what i know about Great White Sharks, (not a great deal) they have no maternal instincts and infact have to "fast" (stop eating) during the time around birth to prevent them eating their young, the young more than likely swim into shallower water after birth and move up the food chain from there.
look its clearly not eaven out of its teens , ive seen great whites nearly 4 times that ones size , they released it yes because it started eating other sharks but also they would not be able to keep it once it was fully grown
inuandkirara is an absolute idiot. This is an AQUARIUM dumbass, it's not like this animal was caught by a bunch of amateurs teenagers who don't know what they are doing. I guarantee they had professionals watching this shark 24/7
They are not trying to tame it you fucking idiot, they are trying to learn how it reacts in captivity and trying to learn everything they can about it.
Break through the glass? YOU ARE STUPID. The "glass" is actually acrylic, which is 13 inches thick.
Actually I know almost everything about sharks, especially the great white, The great white eats 7 times a day, they only binge when there is low food supply, and One more thing... the reason about breaking the glass, is not mine. I'm just saying that the great white shark is very strong, it can break through a metal door swimming at more than 50Mph.
We are in no way trying to "tame" them as you put it. They are a wild animal and we intend to keep it that way. We are merely educating the public and what they are doing to harm such great things.
I am not an Idiot. I just care! Why would they Want to know how it moves, not like were ever going to try to ride him or anything, I just say that they should leave them alone. It's Our fault that they are all dying! We polute the oceans. Soon, the Great white shark will end up just like the carcharodon megalodon. I don't care how think the glass is, you just don't care about them like I do.
dude it's not legal to keep a great white shark in a tank! 3 reasons:
- It's environment in a tank is to small and It would die from claustiphobia.
-It's a wild untamed animal from the depths of the ocean.
- yes It could also VERY EASILY break the glass. and the food suppy would also be very low!!! I care for the great white shark It's my favorite animal and I believe that it should live in undisterbed environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its a professional aquarium, and they do a great job there, plus they release their fish when they get to big. Like one of the great whites they use to have they released because it bit off another fish's tail. and then they had another that they also released.
If you like sharks check out adoptashark(dot)com it´s a website where you can adopt a shark, even a great white, with a satellite tag and they tell you where it went in the ocean, how deep, and more, very cool
Very nice video. I'm glad that Aquarium's are starting to learn how to keep these beautiful creatures of the ocean in captivity... and healthy while in captivity. It gives people a chance to see how amazing they really are, and not just the blood-thirsty monsters people make them out to be.
Long Live the Great White, and may Many More be kept in Captivity successfully!
if i remeber correctly that shark either alway hit the glass in one spot or always swam in a circle because of an electromagnetic field it sensed in the tank and it had to be removed bacause it was acting eratically
it's true they can't live in captivity the lack of a natural ocean enviroment just kills them because no great white has ever live in captivity for more than a year and baby whites dye after a month
Nice tank. How many gallon is it, does it stand in your livingroom to? lol

SQUILLA898 4 years ago
White sharks are becoming increasingly endangered due to terrible fishing practices, so it is critical that every animal we have on exibit is returned to the wild healthy, happy, sane, and ready to contribute to the gene pool. We want nothing more than to re-introduce individuals that are in better condition than they were when we caught them or recieved them from other aquariums.
SQUILLA898 4 years ago
This is chiefly because the on-staff marine veterinarians have a transport vehicle that requires no more than 6.5 feet, 200 pounds of an animal in it. We would never keep an animal long enough for its physical or mental health to become compromised in any way. Remember, animals on exibit are NOT for enternatinment- they are ambassadors of their species that are around temporarily so they can be safely returned to the wild and contribute to the gene pool.
SQUILLA898 4 years ago
So- why do we release them in 4 to 8 months? We calculated that that amount of time is what it takes for a 5-foot individual to gain a foot and over a hundred pounds in weight. 6.5 feet, 200 pounds is our maximum size we want these animals to reach before acclimation and return to the wild.
SQUILLA898 4 years ago
We put the rotation schedule to hard work with the residents of the 1.3 million gallon tank the white shark lives in: We fully understand that keeping a migratory animal capable of covering hundreds of miles in a day is compromising. With that said, our white sharks never stay for more than 8 months. EVER. Our previous two white sharks thrived when they were with us- they gained over a foot in length over about 6 months in that tank, as well as gaining over a hundred pounds each.
SQUILLA898 4 years ago

Absolutely Sickening, MBA fed lies upon lies about this shark, This was not a success the shark was almost dead by the time they got rid of it, it had so many problems from running into the tank walls it went deaf blind and basically dead.

holy crud i didnt know it got that big! the last time i saw it it was only 8 ft,!!! it looks like its 13ft. in this!!! wow.

I been in that room and seen the aquarium, I would never feel safe with a great white in a tank no matter how thick the glass is O.O

30secondsToMo 4 years ago
if you keep a GWS in captivity do they have a shorter life span? i thought they did....isn't it dangerous to feel such a dangerous shark? i admit it's really cool but how on earth did you manage to capture it?
LexiShadelash 4 years ago
No Great White has ever lived in Captivity for longer than half a year they either die within the first 2 weeks because they refuse to feed or the aquarium releases them, the Sharks are caught at a very young age, and capturing a five foot White isn't really that hard compared with a 21 foot White.
OOCMk12 4 years ago
what about the mother?
LexiShadelash 4 years ago
From what i know about Great White Sharks, (not a great deal) they have no maternal instincts and infact have to "fast" (stop eating) during the time around birth to prevent them eating their young, the young more than likely swim into shallower water after birth and move up the food chain from there.
OOCMk12 4 years ago
thx :)
i suppose it's better off in the wild. I mean it would be amazing to see but it's just not right the king of the sea shouldn't be locked up

is this real?? i thought these sharks died in captivity

You can adopt and name a great white shark at a website called adoptashark(dot)com, very cool
paulinbaja 4 years ago
should keep them all in captivity
so they are out of the way of hunters such as the japs
wiganlad1000 4 years ago
there are 2 reasons we cant
first they grow to big and break the glass ( they cant be dpmesticated)
and second they eat to much its a good idea but a costly one and a hard one to keep up
sry
bluesharkdivest 4 years ago
u cant keep a great white shark captive because of there sound waves! it kills them
mykmufc 4 years ago
look its clearly not eaven out of its teens , ive seen great whites nearly 4 times that ones size , they released it yes because it started eating other sharks but also they would not be able to keep it once it was fully grown

inuandkirara is an absolute idiot.
KILL YOURSELF
Fict10n 4 years ago
I agree with you.
Besides about your inuandkirara reasons:
-That tank is Everything else than small
-You go ahead and try to tame great white shark idiot!
-Why h*ll it would break the glass? besides look the size of that tank, that glass aint some normal glass that gets breaked by some little shark
-Food supply low. Do you know anything about sharks? They DONT eat like you do everyday. They can be really long time without eating.
TmsFin 4 years ago
(Note: I agree with Fict10n)
TmsFin 4 years ago
Actually I know almost everything about sharks, especially the great white, The great white eats 7 times a day, they only binge when there is low food supply, and One more thing... the reason about breaking the glass, is not mine. I'm just saying that the great white shark is very strong, it can break through a metal door swimming at more than 50Mph.
inuandkirara 4 years ago
We are in no way trying to "tame" them as you put it. They are a wild animal and we intend to keep it that way. We are merely educating the public and what they are doing to harm such great things.
30secondsToMo 4 years ago

Shit, since when was it legal to have great whites in captivity :s

Very nice video. I'm glad that Aquarium's are starting to learn how to keep these beautiful creatures of the ocean in captivity... and healthy while in captivity. It gives people a chance to see how amazing they really are, and not just the blood-thirsty monsters people make them out to be.
Long Live the Great White, and may Many More be kept in Captivity successfully!

what if the shark hit the glass, i think he could break it
wmr2209 5 years ago
if i remeber correctly that shark either alway hit the glass in one spot or always swam in a circle because of an electromagnetic field it sensed in the tank and it had to be removed bacause it was acting eratically

Xcellent video dgrgich. Been there many times but never saw the shark - thanks.

Was that even real? I thought that last Great White that was kept in captivity died in the 1950s or 60s.
TO220740 5 years ago
It was very real. The Monterey Bay Aquarium kept a young great white alive in captivity for over 200 days in 2004 and 2005.
dgrgich 5 years ago
it's true they can't live in captivity the lack of a natural ocean enviroment just kills them because no great white has ever live in captivity for more than a year and baby whites dye after a month

Excellent video and editing. Scary that this fish was released back into the wild.
