quattro got me up a steep snowy/icy hill. with balding stock tires. my audi is at 110,000 without a major breakdown. hell my Hyundai tyranny died before 15k miles. they didnt even replace it.
cost me 3k. my a4 is under powered yet it has no problem with steep snowy hills. thank you quattro. im sure there are some nice AWD/4wd systems out there but I still like my audi.

Whether or not Subaru was in this test it still proves quattro is an exceptional system. The allroad made it up with ease. Second best didn't come close. Even owning a quattro, I'd say Subaru's AWD is every bit as capable. Which is better? I don't know. I just know that my quattro dominates everything else on the road. Other car brands (BMW) like to use tests (the ramp test) that highlight one flaw of their competition (Audi). This is a test of real world application. Audi needs nothing more.
Mitsubishi? Pretty sure Evo & especially Montero/Pajero would have made it up. I have a Montero 3.8l with low profile street tires on 22s & went up the mtn to my house in a foot of snow easily while passing 30+ cars stuck beside the road including Jeeps, Toyotas & Audis. Pulled out over 25 cars that night.

@229ovidiu The Patrol had the false tyres on in this old test from 2001. So the others had much more grip. The other cars had snow tyres on and the Patrol had not enough Power: Only 158 HP and 2.4 t, the Audi had 250 HP and 1.9 t. But this test was in 2001, today it could be totally diffrent.

It participated in so many on and off road races and in every race teared asses. That's why 4wd systems got banned in many races. The only one 4wd system that could be better than Quattro is the one used in Hummer H1, and that's because it was designed for military purposes. But still...

@229ovidiu What I'm mad at is that every little make has it's own 4wd system and thinks that's something bit. Even Daihatsu claims a wild 4x4 system on their Terios. I mean, come on! All 4wd systems have in common the same principle, but everyone is different on the tiny details, details that almost noone can see. Older Quattros were based on lockable differentials, making them go anywhere. Lockable diffs have been replaced with EDL, which everyone is using nowadays, EVERYONE.

But in this video clip, they compare with other system and i wont say PATROL is the best ever, but is a real extreme off road vehicle, like many others.. and could pass that hill just like Audi.
so keep in mind: the quattro has a sophisticated 4wd system, more torque than any other car and is much lighter than any other car. of course he wins. they should have compared an audi Q7 with the same power as the BMW to make comparable results.

this winter i traded an 02 outback that with brand new tires got stuck in a foot of snow twice, the audi a4 i traded for never stuck in even 2 feet of snow and is much more fun to drive, trust me subaru owners once you go audi you'll never go back

quattro is a great system, but if this test would've been sponsored by BMW, the BMW would've won, if Volvo was the host, the Volvo would've made it. It seemed on quite a few occasions in this test when the driver made sure the car will get stuck.
I have a friend that got his 2006 EVO 9 stuck in the snow, and when a 2006 STI couldnt pull him out they called me with my 2004 A4 Quattro 3.0L which pulled him out on the first try with no problems. Both the EVO and STI cant touch me in the snow. Type in "evo vs audi snow" or something like that, its a 10 second clip as proof.

@Maxxxshop yup there you go. quattro is FWD bias during regular driving, rear differential is not always engaged. When the front wheels begin to lose traction, powerful is diverted from the the front to the rear via a Haldex differential while SH-AWD is FWD bias during regular driving. 70/30 front rear power split. Capable of 30/70 split under certain conditions and capable of actively sending all of the power in the rear to either wheel during hard cornering. a much more advanced system! :D

All I know is that I had never driven 120kph in packed/new snow untill I drove an audi 90 quattro. 1987 model. I didnt do it in a Subaru cause I hate Jap cars and they are boring pieces of shit. Enough said.
The subaru system would match the quatros in this test at a lower price point and we cant have that. A friend replaced his subaru with a quatro. In less than a year he replaced the quatro with another subaru.His familly owned a new car dealer and he has driven a plethora of automobiles over the years.The quatro is very good, but subaru awd coupled with a flat engine is a superiorly stable platform. Subarus lower cg is more than just marketing hype.
I agree that Subaru's AWD is great and up there with Audi's QUATTRO, but I believe the point of this test was to show the comparison across the price range of cars. I still prefer Audis over Subarus because Subarus are not as comfortable.
@innovativemind When i was a pup i worked part time in the service dept of a local Porsche Audi dealership. My boss had a new 3 door quatro; the one that was stomping Lancia. He gave me a ride and Ive been hooked on awd since. Subaru reminds me of the day when germans built simple,but great driving machines. Frills were airconditioning and a effective heater. I hate electric windows etc. I drive with my abs fuses pulled. Abs causes as many problems as it solves. Thanx for the civil comment!!
Well I read all the comments here and i own a 2006 audi a6 and it is fantastic on snow ice sleet rain etc.......seamless transitios of torque from one wheel to the next because it is always on and doe not need to be activated by a cluth or otherwise, it is a proactive instead of reactive system, big difference. having said that all audi's are not 4x4 like a jeep wrangler is, it is not an off road vehicle not even the q7 which will give you more clearance but does not have the torque to get ,rock
well i don't know how "fair" this test was... but I can speak from real life experience... just last week driving in a snow storm on an unplowed highway... we had absolutely no trouble in the A4 (ESP and traction control didn't even come on)... In the left lane there were only Audi's and 2 Subaru's... beside that a lone Ford Focus was the only other vehicle that ventured in the passing lane - LOL! Anyway I could give many real life experiences like that.. so the test doesn't suprise me.

Not a good test. Did they all have the same tires, the same driver? Where was the Landrover? Where was the Merc G Wagen? The Nissan Patrol is better off road than an Audi, no question. So it was all a fix. Not believable.

@honda900000 Yes you right, but is not all about the HP and weight. It's much more than that and how hp is transferred to the wheels.
2011 we have from Nissan Navara with 190hp, Toyota Hylux, Mitsubishi L200 and Volkswagen Amarok have similar hp, they rock in off-road.
And when i say about extreme off-road it is extreme.. not just climbing a hill.
And even a small Suzuki Samurai is awesome.

I have respect for Audi, but they stop Nissan Patrol witch is a 4x4 car for real, not a mini suv, or a non offroad car, and the driver stop the Patrol just to show as the Audi A 6 or A 4 have power to up claimb the hill bull sheet guys.
The driver stop the Patrol and maybe the tyers was not for snow.. ederwaise, the Patrol and the Bmw X5 destroy the Audi a6 or a4 allroad.. in all teren mode.
The test was not for real, is a lie, fake, etc..

quattro is a great system, but if this test would've been sponsored by BMW, the BMW would've won, if Volvo was the host, the Volvo would've made it. It seemed on quite a few occasions in this test when the driver made sure the car will get stuck.

I have a friend that got his 2006 EVO 9 stuck in the snow, and when a 2006 STI couldnt pull him out they called me with my 2004 A4 Quattro 3.0L which pulled him out on the first try with no problems. Both the EVO and STI cant touch me in the snow. Type in "evo vs audi snow" or something like that, its a 10 second clip as proof.

@Maxxxshop yup there you go. quattro is FWD bias during regular driving, rear differential is not always engaged. When the front wheels begin to lose traction, powerful is diverted from the the front to the rear via a Haldex differential while SH-AWD is FWD bias during regular driving. 70/30 front rear power split. Capable of 30/70 split under certain conditions and capable of actively sending all of the power in the rear to either wheel during hard cornering. a much more advanced system! :D

if you notice the patrol safari braked to stop,they want to show audi is a good all wheel drive. well indeed it is,BUT not better than the safari with it's diff locks,and they could have tried a subaru, but they didn't want apparently. The subaru system would match the quatros in this test at a lower price point and we cant have that. A friend replaced his subaru with a quatro. In less than a year he replaced the quatro with another subaru.His familly owned a new car dealer and he has driven a plethora of automobiles over the years.The quatro is very good, but subaru awd coupled with a flat engine is a superiorly stable platform. Subarus lower cg is more than just marketing hype.

I agree that Subaru's AWD is great and up there with Audi's QUATTRO, but I believe the point of this test was to show the comparison across the price range of cars. I still prefer Audis over Subarus because Subarus are not as comfortable.

@innovativemind When i was a pup i worked part time in the service dept of a local Porsche Audi dealership. My boss had a new 3 door quatro; the one that was stomping Lancia. He gave me a ride and Ive been hooked on awd since. Subaru reminds me of the day when germans built simple,but great driving machines. Frills were airconditioning and a effective heater. I hate electric windows etc. I drive with my abs fuses pulled. Abs causes as many problems as it solves. Thanx for the civil comment!!

Well I read all the comments here and i own a 2006 audi a6 and it is fantastic on snow ice sleet rain etc.......seamless transitios of torque from one wheel to the next because it is always on and doe not need to be activated by a cluth or otherwise, it is a proactive instead of reactive system, big difference. having said that all audi's are not 4x4 like a jeep wrangler is, it is not an off road vehicle not even the q7 which will give you more clearance but does not have the torque to get ,rock

well i don't know how "fair" this test was... but I can speak from real life experience... just last week driving in a snow storm on an unplowed highway... we had absolutely no trouble in the A4 (ESP and traction control didn't even come on)... In the left lane there were only Audi's and 2 Subaru's... beside that a lone Ford Focus was the only other vehicle that ventured in the passing lane - LOL! Anyway I could give many real life experiences like that.. so the test doesn't suprise me.

Not a good test. Did they all have the same tires, the same driver? Where was the Landrover? Where was the Merc G Wagen? The Nissan Patrol is better off road than an Audi, no question. So it was all a fix. Not believable.
