The Lich King was Kil'jaeden's follower inside of Azeroth. The first Lich King was in fact Ner'zhul, an orc shaman that went through the Dark Portal and got corrupted by Kil'jaeden. And through an unsuccessful attempt to send Ner'zhul through dimensions to Azeroth. Ner'zhul was frozen in Nether Ice from the trip and was bound to the original Lich Kings armor. And sent off Frostmourne into the mountains in Dragonblight. Get it right

the title lich king is due to him being the king of the scourge. and the origonal lich kings soul and arthas's are one after he releases the armor from the frozen throne and puts it on. frostmourn is the lich kings sword and it corrupts arthas, he only used it to save his people but he ended up being so corrupted by it he destroyed them. the lich king speaks to him through it and in the end orders him to release the armor and wear it.
