  • lefty math girl like me!!! Keep it up!! You will do great things!

  • Only with paper and pencil can you really get a feel for the nature of numbers, the patterns that occur, etc. When you rely on a calculator, you are outsourcing calculation to a machine that will give you an answer but not teach you how it's done. When you write and work through a problem and verify it, you have taught yourself and expanded your ability.

  • Homeschooling? So you all have the knowledge, experiences and perspectives in the world to teach your child? It's wrong.

  • This video makes me sick--this is quite obviously from a biased source and this child has been used to ply people into making a curriculum decision based on what she has been told. Prove the value of your program through statistics and data not a child.

  • you kidding me.use mathcad and you dont need to know all bullshit

  • You're a cute girl, but it is VERY unusual for a girl to be interested in mathematics! Please take care.

  • @prilstrudel wow thats really sexist

  • @JolieDawson

No I am NOT sexist! I was making a sarcastic joke.

  • Obviously this young person has no idea why she is doing the tasks she is doing. Who would expect her to? She doesn't see the connection among the mathematical ideas. Most parents do either. Thus, we are forced to "continue doing what we've always done" and we wonder why we continue to perform poorly in international assessments. Read Bill Gates' take on instruction in the US. He is obviously for reform, but we are unlikely to change.

  • so cute it hurts to look at her.

these poor kids minds are being polluted with inefficient nonsense.

    americans get what they deserve.

  • The trend is waning: MathLand was cancelled, a panel formed by Dubya late in his administration spoke ill of reform math (one of the few good things he did), and Saxon and Singapore Math are on the rise, especially outside the educational bureaucracy; for that matter, when I was in college the elementary education majors all covered the use of Singapore Math (I was a math major but I looked all around the university bookstore).

  • @jelewis2 Yes, we'll be returning to mathematics instructional of the 1970s and likely to the same test scores. Fourth and 8th grade student NAEP scores will soon return to those levels, 2 grade levels behind where they are now.

  • Is this an advertisement?

  • Wouldn't doubt it.

  • OH NO! The equals button broke because I pressed it too many times. What will I do, I don't know 300/6. Is TERC really what they teach in somplaces now. Man I feel sorry for those kids.

I can't believe they pressed the equals button 49 times.

You could pick 300 then the answer will be 1.

I find long division useful when the answer is not whole. You can find the whole decimal representation of the answer. Just because we have calculators it doesn't mean that we should use them.

  • And after over 15 years I still remember my 1-12 times tables and find them helpful.

  • The one thing I disagree with is with decimals thinking of them like money.

You should first ignore the decimal point:

    9.9/0.003

    make this 99/3=33

Now in division you subtract the amount of numbers after the decimal point in the denominator from the amount of numbers after the decimal point in the numerator and move the decimal point right this many times or left if it's negative.

    3-1=2 So 9.9/0.003 = 3300

  • For multiplication you ignore the decimal then do the same but instead you add the amount of numbers after the decimal points together and move the decimal point left this many times. 0.7*0.67

    7*67=469

    1+2=3

    So 0.7*6.7=0.469

  • That should be 0.7*0.67=0.469

  • @zyzzyzus You are misleading in your post. This is not what is taught in Investigations. However, I'm sure you're not interested in facts or the truth when you're pushing your agenda.

  • @sleeper2345 What? I don't have an agenda. I was just giving my opinion on how numbers should be calculated. I wasn't misleading. Can you tell me what on earth you are talking about?

I am very confused by your post.

  • @sleeper2345 I think I know what your post is about now.

I am interested in this because I plan to become a Maths teacher and I need to know methods that are taught.

I was merely using humour to convey my message that I don't agree with this method of teaching. Some investigations are needed to help with Maths but from what I have read, "Investigations in Numbers, Data, and Space" concentrates too much on this and not enough on pure Mathematics.

  • @zyzzyzus Glad you're interested. However, I suggest you base your decisions on facts rather than misleading information. I've seen some bright students go through traditional instruction and add 7 nearly 100 times rather than multiply. Why? Because school has not helped them make the connection! They have learned in school to not trust their own reasoning and to try to follow rules that they don't understand. A considerable amount of research supports these conclusions.

  • @sleeper2345 Yeah I was only joking about what was said in the video. The truth is that different students require different teaching methods. With investigations, some children may feel held back by it which is what seems to have happened to the girl in the video.

There are some good ideas in investigations such as encouraging children to develop their own ways of calculation instead of giving them the algorithms.

  • I have found that since leaving school I have learnt alot more because I teach myself and I need to understand the reasoning behind the mathematics.

At school I was just taught do it this way because that is how it is done. This may be ok if you can memorise this but for me it didn't work.

I believe that the teaching needs to be geared towards the individual by grouping children that require a paticular method into smaller groups.

  • Wieso tut sie sowas :D

  • shame to use your children to talk about politics

  • Wow... Okay. 300/6 is 50. I could do that in my head when I was, like, 7.

  • She doesn't look like a 5ft grader.. XD

  • If your adding 6+6 on a calculator your doing it wrong....

ps. this advertisement for the book is a fail.

  • Why are their math books so bug, you learn nothing in elementary school.

  • why didn't she just divide 300 by 6?

  • Cause those crappy math books make u do what she did

  • Wow she uses a calculator for such easy calculations. She is such a genius!(sarcastic)

  • Did she say sax? Anyway, she speaks very quickly.

  • sexy math? absolutely inappropriate for 5th graders

  • It was thought root(√). 4:26

  • this is excellent, i am really impressed with this video. i wonder if it was part of a school project. My mom made me practice everyday during the summer too.

  • hi my names madeline to and im a 5th grader lol

  • who caught that she is left handed

  • Madeline should be a teacher.

  • i see why you saxon and singapor better than terk terk doesn't teach maths and it takes too long to do that to solve a problem like 300/6

  • Yeah, it would be funny to see how they would solve 3000/6.

    :D

  • my name is madeline too! check out our how to viedos

  • My name is madeline Too i also love math

  • hehehehheheh.. my names madeline too! and i love math, and especially when i was a fifth grader

  • I've added this video in my favorites because she is so CUTE and SMART. 2 Thumbs up for her!

    MATH ROCKS!

  • wierd where it says ur lessen from u math book it looks similar but not the book vcovers wierd

  • im using math 76 from saxon

  • she's left handed! no wonder she's so smart

  • Madeline is AWESOME!

  • shit wat is this math class

  • shes just like meee

  • "normally it doesn't even teach me to use a calculator right" lol

    so adorable and sharp

  • wow my names madeline too but i hate math! i used too be a 5th grader! wow thats wierd i learned the same things in 5th grade. your smart madeline nice job!!!

  • fish sticks

  • she's just a kid

  • i just learned how to count today. up to 6. beyond that i have to rely on the successor function.

  • I wish I was like this girl when I was young.

My Mom used to have to whip me until I wanted to read hahaha

Me and my brother and sisters use to have to do these big books full of reading and math work from 1PM to 3PM...I would always fall asleep or say I have to use the bathroom and never come out ahaha.

    Lol, Goodtimes! =)

  • your mon would whip you because she was concerned about your future , and how you will be able to stand on your own two feet, you couldn't even become a taxi driver, if you couldn't do simple calculations like this

P.S Did she use a leather whip of some sort, or wr u just exxagerating...my mom used to whack me over the head with a thick biology book heheh....even after I returned from my(few hours of) hibernation in the bathroom...heheh

  • cheers!

  • Your awesome Madeline, keep up the great work

  • boring.

  • is this for real

  • Man, I'm confused, but not in the way some others are. The way she's doing it--that's how I was taught when I was her age in the mid-90s. It never occurred to me that there was any other way. And that first method she was bringing up does seem ridiculous.

  • WTF??

woh would want to watch this?

  • i knew that my doctor was right,he told me that left hunded people are smarter

  • adding unlike fractions is easy! all u gotta do is find the.........

  • who wrote that for you and forced you to make the video? maybe you shouldnt look around so much and make it obvious

  • yeah maddie!

  • this lame... better funny math vids on utube

  • Uhhh i learnt that stuff in year 4 1/2 do algerbra or something better......than 1+1=78943 Correct!

  • She is cute but she is a nerd.

  • lame, they should be learning algebra by 5th grade

  • like u

  • Why does anybody care about this vid? This is basic mathematics; sub algebra 1. Everyone goes through it so whats the big deal?

  • The dumbed down programs she talks about are all part of the UN schools, Goals 2000, marxist learning for the new world order.

  • Right, the "new world order". So anyway, what is dumbed down about the new curriculum, besides the fact that dumb kids can't make sense of it? Precisely. The old curriculum is dumb because it's easily learned by rote. The new one requires some thinking. You should try it some time.

  • TERK and "new math" are shams, no, that's not a strong enough word. They are CRIMES against children. No child in this country should be incompetent at math, but these programs make children that way.

  • Thank you Madeline for your eloquent explanation of TERK vs. Singapore and Saxon.

To the person who wants to know where to get Singapore and Saxon you can buy them @ homeschool supply companies such as Rainbow Resource dot com who sells then at a discount.

I'm a homeschooling mom teaching math the OLD way with pencil and paper not with calculators. This crazy new math alone is a good enough reason for me to homeschool, however I chose homeschooling for many reasons!

  • wow shes pretty good at math at her age=]

  • can you give me the name of those books please? an the ISBN . I want to have them.

  • toast!

  • You are very smart!

  • dulciani is also a good textbook [structure and method]

  • -.-

  • omg i mean. GO MADLINE! xD she is so smart. =] i luv watching this. im adding it to my favorites...........

    ...okay im tired orf typing..

  • gr8 work by little girl, keep it up!

  • The way she says Singapore makes it sounds likes as if it was an educational institution, when it's an entire country.

But damn, I guess this teaches me to appreciate the math I learnt during Primary School.

  • singapore is also a maths textbook series.

  • Dude.... SIngapore is a COUNTRY. CHeck your world map.

  • I know all about Singapore the country. It's also a math textbook publishing company.

  • your good at maths lykoooo...

    mallaish...

    ur not sad m-m-m-muller light

    x

  • This is soooo true

  • This seemed to be "from the heart"...something the student really wanted to share because she was passionate about it. It didn't seem like something that was scripted by an adult.

It also didn't at all seem like an advertisement for a textbook. In particular, it didn't seem like an advertisement for Saxon Math or Singapore.

  • my name is cooler haha

  • she isn't as smart as i would think she is:P and her methods are longer and more difficult to remember it can be shorter. in the netherlands/holland we learn better methods.

  • What a great math girl! Good job!

  • I use this book at my school and it's hell!

  • That was a fantastic comparison. I'd like to see both of these books explore much tougher problems as well as the more procedural mathematics. I wish more students would have this kind of initiative! ;)

    Dr. Gordon Hamilton

  • Nice job!! ^_^

  • 0.04*7=0.28 lol!

  • See, the fluke is besides teaching maths any students needs to learn methodology, so as he learns faster and doesn't forget what has been learned

  • lmao..many people can right with left. everybody doesnt have the same writing abilities. people who can write with the left hand are very smart. madline is so intelligent. =]

  • no one bldy cares about your life

  • Heaps exciting, I'm defiantly favorteing this video

  • Go Madelaine. Thanks for teaching us math, you are doing

great. Keep up the good work.

  • You have no respect for people.Thumbs up to

    Madeline anyway.

  • durr durr durr!!!!!!! duhhhhhhhhh..........

  • Go sweetie! We are all proud of you.

  • lol that's so obviously been written for her

  • bullshit..

  • what a load of propaganda, I think the point is valid, but making kids read up scripts like that and presenting it like her own words (or atleast attempting to make it seem like her own words) is wrong

  • watch your mouth

  • Madeline is BEAUTIFUL,CUTE and so SMART! I LOVE YOU MADELINE! ^^

  • lmfao

  • BORING

  • lost my time

  • why does this video have 17,115 veiws?

  • Yay, go Madeline!

  • are those kids behind in math?...

  • wow...the exactly amount of gay=))))...

  • Awesome!

  • What a smart kid! It makes me glad to see kids who are actually into learning.

  • what is she talking about.. I'm in the 9th grade, but I don't understand a shit..

  • Nerd.

  • Dam right kid!!

  • I'd feel better with Saxon Math if Biff Byford and Paul Quinn were teaching me. Madeline doesn't cut the mustard...

  • I am an adult going to community college, and math is my next subject. Can you suggest other math sites.

I hate math. I wll try to come back to prestondave.

did I mention that I hate math?

  • This young lady gives me hope for the future of our country.

  • I've been an engineer for 20 years and in real life situations, we have to understand how math works in order to solve equations quickly and accurately. So in that sense, it's whatever works for you. But in high school and college, you better be able to manipulate equations, know your multiplication tables, etc. otherwise you'll have a tough time to graduate

  • BTW, What is this "TERC"?!

  • So one solution to that problem is to sum up 6 to the total of 300 and it works. But sure, in real live you should be able to take the shortest way to the answer.

  • True! 300/6 = is the fastest solution doing with a calc-machine like this. There are almost always different methods... depending on what you are doing, the application. A computer can only "count", so depending on the internal system, the calc will doing exactly like that (sum 6+6+....).

  • Thank you for let me know the Saxon Math. Good learning materials.

However, I am sorry to say that I am not impressed with you, Madeline. I am not saying you are not good, but I know some Second Graders that know how to do +, -, *, /, ^, fraction by heart.

  • What makes you think that she con't do that? I know many high school students who can't grasp the idea that 25/25 is one, and that if you multiply a number by one its value is unchanged.

  • I think I said I knew someone younger than her can do the same things. You would not impressed by college students who can do calculus, do you ?

  • My point is this: the fact that you know younger students who are able to perform calculations with fractions does not take away from her ability to do so. I am impressed with a young lady who is articulate and able to express opinions about various math programs that many adults don't understand, not to mention that she cares enough about education that she took the time to make the video.

  • Well said...

    My apology.

  • TERC= confused kids, parents, and frustrated teachers. I am a teacher and a parent and I want the old math back. Give me "drill and kill" any day over TERC.

  • /sigh confused parents and frustrated teachers are PROOF that the "old math" wasn't working. Frustration=POOR CONTENT KNOWLEDGE. Direct result of your hallowed "drill and kill."

  • ahahahhah what a geek

  • promotion video...sigh

  • Wonderful, thank you for sharing Madeline. My children are almost ready for this math and it is helpful for me to see the differences between the programs in order to make the best curriculum choice for them.

  • Gotta love math!

    Holla!

  • totally math rules :D

  • OMG! ISNT SAXON MATH THE BEST! its very organized its awesome! do u go to a private school?

  • Do they use fun little mental shortcuts anymore, like the ones in JS Meyer's book "Arithmetricks"? I ate that up in 4th grade: practicing the tips and then figuring out for myself why they work. Is N divisible by 6? Well, check it for both 2 and 3. If by 3, all the digits add up to a number divisible by 3. Is 582378522 divisible by 6? Yes, it's even; and its digits add up to 42 and then 6, which is divisible by 3. The point's the creative problem-solving skills taught by this.

  • pervert!

  • I truely hope youre 12...

  • this is the 2 time i saw this vid and i still dont understand shit!!!!!

  • WTF!! dude lol

  • Poor Madeline. I'm sorry that adults put you up to this.

  • Im Okay

  • I would have been convinced if she stopped looking away from the camera. I wonder how much they paid her or her parents.

  • WOW! who did her make up?

  • wtf i dont understand lol

  • i know you it's dylans miny brother

  • they gave her sum kindof drug
