Funny, I love this song and I've listened to it a million times but I'd never realized how little of the spotlight Mills was getting (even when his role was SO integral). Was Stipe just so much of an icon at this time that the rest of the band just opted for the shadows? Compare this to the '83 footage from the Letterman show where Stipe can't speak on camera and Pete Buck and Mills carry the interview. Interesting.
Greater than the sum of the parts. Which is what makes this such a special song - the guitar, bass, vocal, backing, organ are brilliant in isolation and combine to create a song that may summarize (if possible) the prodigious talent of the collective in REM
@tristezatrece Hola, te respondo en Castellano, una de las mejores canciones de los 80, que armonias, coros, estribillo. Para mí es imposible elegir entre ésta, losing my religion, find the river, perfect circle, the lifting, I believe, fails to climb, etc. Con REM me sucede igual que con Bowie, es decir, Stipe y Bowie son dos genios en todo el sentido de la palabra. A wonderful song with great lyrics too.
Michael just exudes sex in this great video. I love the way he moves his body. A big hit with 'the public' and Everyman, and for good reason - the song is beautiful in every way.
Try finding someone on Disney channel with this much talent. I don't care how many cd's Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus sell, they will never, ever, ever, be in the same class as REM.
all those fake popstars.....they need to just sit and listen to this music and play what is real inside them...instead of what sells records....it is not sincere, and people who like real music know it. Kids of today are being beaten over the head with it. Its all a sham.
Bill Berry was the original drummer, He nearly died in the mid-nineties (brain blood clot I think) and left despite recovering. They have never been the same since. Berry wrote REMs most beautiful song, Perfect Circle (on Murmur)
Wow, this goes so deep! I want my unborn baby to emerge in that song. Every phrase in the lyrics makes sense without knowing which one! And sexy Michael, yeah! This is pure art.
I'm of the same generation as the band. I remember when they were THE college band back in the early 80's, when they came to my school in 1983, (SUNY Buffalo) when "Radio Free Europe" was all over the college radio station.
I have almost everything by them, and when "Accelerate" came out last year, all I could think was; "The boys are back!"

I'm only 29 but my 38 year old bro. had me into this shit when I was in like third grade. After years of being fed up with new music I'm back here and this stuff is so good. Most people my age have no clue about early R.E.M., sux for them.
I love early R.E.M. I've heard this song on MTV unplugged once many many years ago, loved it immediately and was so happy to go to their concert a month ago and hear them perform it (they rarely do.) I had the feeling that nobody else sang and jumped up and down like a crazy ball! Just me! Few people know about it, and it is just perfect!
yeah, i am the same age. you said it right - this generation sucks. most of teens do not care about such a music. sometimes i feel sorry for it, anyways theyr fault. r.e.m. still rock!
Funny though , there are plenty of teenagers who still like older generation music and are clowned by old men like you because they "weren't even born" yet. So honestly..why does it matter to you? You're gonna die soon anyway. Let new generation pass on.
Sounds just like me. I'm a year younger than you and my brother who's a lil older than me, grew up on a block where older kids would always show us what's up with music and movies and everything ... not to mention my parents so I was usually the black sheep in my classes (still am) of people who only have tunnel vision for whatever is "hot" and new at the moment. Same thing with foods and anything cultured and good.
a very good translation of your own post! you should just say "one of the best melodIES" in rock and it will be perfect English...I love reading all the Italian comments about REM, I think Italians relate well to REM because of the intense emotionality of their music.
Murmur and Reckoning were the best, but then again I'm 42 so I might see things a bit differently :)
My roomie was a DJ at WVXU (Xavier) in 1985 and you just can't imagine what that was like when REM broke. Talking Heads, all of it. Remember it like it was yesterday.
It is track number 3 on their 4th album, Life's Rich Pageant from 1986. My favourite song by my favourite band. There is an unplugged version floating around (which is brilliant) but I haven't been able to find it in ages.
yes, I did here Stipe say this "might be" the best REM song in their collection. It is surely my favorite and it came at a time before REM were megastars, and nobody had quite heard anything like their music. This song just blew everyone away with the backing vocals.
