Yes, in this case it’s a choice for prisoners to have sexual relations. But it is a choice that is mutually beneficial. Not that they "fall in love", but they do it to mutually consent and not kill one another. Prison's are violent so one can expect that submitting to Satan "saves" their life or lives. In this case, the choice to "be homosexual" is a MORAL one, and can OBSERVED to be moral by others in this case if the alternative is violent death.
I never chose to be straight, I just was. And I have been in the situation where being gay woulda resulted in large quantities of sex and I woulda chosen being gay in a heartbeat if it actually was a choice. BUT IT'S NOT! It's hardwired.
@GluteusIlluminatus i dont choose to breath I just do it. wait a minute...how come nobody chooses NOT to breathe...hmmm because they will DIE and life cannot continue this way. And more obvious is the fact that breathing is NORMAL.
Maybe homosexuals aren't born gay, but maybe just maybe they choose to be this way. Please try to be open minded to this thought.
I've know about the finger length phenomenon for a while and both my index and ring fingers are equal, although I am not gay. But what's interesting is that studies have shown elevated levels of testosterone develop the brain more toward mathematics and estrogen toward reading and writing. And It has long been known that boys tend to do better on math tests while girls do better at writing, reading and verbal tests. So now I know why I am so horrible at math! Djarm67, how are you at math?
@DiscoveringReligion "elevated levels of testosterone develop the brain more toward mathematics and estrogen toward reading and writing." Nonsense again. That would mean all of our steroid junkies would be math wizzes. Get a fucking grip
@DiscoveringReligion Umm.. Dumbass... the brain continues to develop for a long time. If you increase testosterone manually during its growth period you won't have people doing better in math r whatever bullshit people are arguing. Also, who's making the tests, the exams to determine competence in these fields. You have science and religion so far up your ass you can't even shit it out
Funny, you are trying to lecture me about human development? I'm in my third year of medical school, how much medical training do you have? Furthermore, I am an atheist, so no, I could really give two fucks about religion.
@DiscoveringReligion Research has actually shown that the differences between men and women on mathematics, verbal, and writing is negligible at best. The only different may be in spatial orientation, and then the effect is only about .03 standard deviations (men do about a point or two better on indicators of spatial orientation). If anything, in fact, research tends to favor women as outperforming men.
See Hyde et al. (1990). Gender Differences in Mathematics Performance: A Meta-Analysis
Pure heterosexuality is in fact as rare as pure homosexuality.
Anyone who knows enough about either ancient times OR about wildlife can see that the default position is bisexuality. Not equal opportunity bisexuality. (Most of these bisexuals are still primarily attracted to the opposite sex.) but bisexual nonetheless.
The current division between straight and gay is purely CULTURAL, as is the aversion towards homosexuality, that is even ingrained in many more open-minded people.
Fact is, alot of people who identify as straight... Many of them experiment, which actually per definition makes them bisexual. If not they wouldn't wish to experiment.
Many others are 'straight' only because culture attaches so many negative things to homosexuality, and they've grown an aversion of it, and think of it as repulsive.
How do I know this? Well look at ancient times, the attitudes there where quite different.
It is my belief that truly heterosexual people are a small minority, just like 100% gay people.
And I think that most straight people, and a few gay people too actually. Are actually technically bisexuals, even if most of them still have a strong to not-strong, but still pronounced preference towards the sex they claim to only find attractive. And that all the rest is pure culture. (And bullshit.)
Actually personal experience supports this to for me.
As for culture, I think a lot of men specifically identify as straight, not so much because they are, but because homosexuality is seen as unmanly.
It strikes me as kind of hilarious. I'm bisexual, and also broad-shouldered, muscular and I actually know how to fight. So I could probably kick the shit out of a lot of supposedly manlier heterosexual men if I had too. So I'd say I'm very manly.
However I do wonder why it MATTERS. Humans are fragile compared to animals anyway.
Hmm... interesting. Although I think it might be a play on all three. Really there's no reason why a combination of factors can't be determinative on sexual preferences. Even in the animal kingdom. Perhaps population numbers of either genders, specific adaptations as mechanisms for reproduction, a natural 'cullling' mechanism for overpopulation or simply a consciousess choice or genetic predisposition. Combined factors might be a bit more plausible than 1-complete truth... My theory at least.
Why do people use the argument of animals, it makes them to the level of animals themselves, did you know that there are some species who do some crazy things? For instance there is a species of spider, once they copulate, the female bites the head of her partner - is that normal for humans to do?
And secondly we are humans, we have intellect and reasoning which animals dont have, we know what is right and wrong, we can reflect, ponder & seek guidance, we are not like the rest of the animals
People use the animal argument as a way to point out that a homosexual orientation must have a biological basis in animals because they aren't capable of choosing it. As such, it is reasonable to expect that there is a biological basis to homosexuality in humans as well.
I can see where they're coming from but what about peadophilia? I'm sure if these people use the biological argument for being homosexual, they could easily use it for sexual crimes against children. I fear soon that will become a social norm too.
@wakbangbang Being born gay has nothing to do with sex crimes against children. almost all reported cases of sex crimes and pedofilia are committed by STRAIGHT people.
how about this for once how come u hate gay and try to preventing them from being human but doing nothing to prevent the chaos around u. meaning u want death and despair for ur fucked up book so u guys can take the rewards.
when that finger length stuff came up i checked mine on both my hands and what i found amused me. My index and ring finger on both hands were the exact same length and i was like "wow it works" cos I'm bi, i loled
Doesn't the video claim, if you are male and your index and ring finger r the same length you are more likely to be heterosexual, unless you r female then your claim would be correct
no i don't think that's what it says i watched it again and it said that if you're ring finger was longer than you're index finger you're more likely to be attracted to females. So that would mean straight male and lesbian female. But if you're index finger is longer than you're ring finger you're more likely to be attracted to males. So that would mean straight female and gay male. And i said that mine were the same length witch would mean I'm attracted to both around equally.
ok, forgive me if I was wrong, I tried watching it a few times to make sure, but to be honest I cant be bothered to watch it again, this time round in order to elucidate my claim (plus its gettin pretty late for me), I'll just take your word for it. I didnt mean to spread unjust claims if my statement was wrong.
I don't get people who say homosexuality is a choice! Did you choose to be straight and attracted to the opposite sex?? Did you wake up one day and say, guess what I choose to love the opposite sex.. no you're either straight or gay.. no confusion inbetween.
In my opinion if " natural" means that something was observed in many species why you don't call "natural" to kill, to rape and to be agressive??? I dont get it. In my opinion homosexualism is more than psychical dissease, And if gay or lesbian accept she/or he is kinda different is ok. Its ok when they are normal people who love each other... ok. But I don't get lastes crazy fashion about being homosexual. And I could not accept this parades with strange equipment from sexshop.disgusting.
Ooops :P I didnt mean that is psychical dissease, but its closer to that, For me it isn't sin, but kinda strange... It breaks the laws of nature...or something
@Baug1 Your just asking that so you can say that i'm really homosexual or in the closet. Answer me this, if there are people who are "gay" who fit none of the characteristics (mentally, physically or environmentally) of a stereotypical "gay person" still exist? then ask yourself why there are "bi-sexuals","a-sexuals","he-she's","tran-sexuals/genders". If you can come up with a better reason than it is a life decision, you are still high on concentrated bleach.
@ drcurator. As you grow up you find out who you are sexually attracted to. This is due to genetics, environment and maybe most of all epigenetics. Sexuality is not a dichotomy but a sliding scale where most people are at the heterosexual end. Men that is at least. Women are more bi-sexual than men.. Have you ever heard a gay person say he/she chose to be gay? If not why?
@Baug1 You didn't answer my question because you know those particular people chose to be that way. As far as genetics goes you can only be characterized inherited alleles which boils down to evolution inwhich sexual inadequacy would be a recessive trait (which is impossible unless it is a mental defect). And recently the APA took sexual preference off of its mental illness's
@Baug1 You are so right, one cannot choose, as is often thought, to be gay, You don't wake up one day and say "Oh you know what, for the rest of my life I am going to like men" It is an inbuilt instinct that you cannot control. You are born gay hence when your sexual identity starts to develop as a teenager your programmed DNA takes over and makes you either attracted to men or women. Homosexuality is not a choice and cannot be changed. Ignorant people choose to ignore the facts! Get with it!
theres also a mental component to homosexuality. just look at the cases where a girl/boy was raped at an early age (usually by family) and then turns out gay. in this case a traumatic event shaped their personality and it was certainly NOT by choice. regardless this represents a small % of gays
when i was a teen i thought i was gay because of sexual repression and the retarded sexual definitions of my old religion
its turns out that i'm VERY not gay... just kinky, and theres a BIG difference
Choices are based on what is indoctrinated in you, less conservatives will end up gay because of a more intolerable upbringing. Also more likely to be secretly gay, or gay but openly homophobic. Someone born with a gay relative, or a more progressive household, will have more homosexuality incidents because it's not frowned upon.
Directing this at your comment, but not actually to you.
Stop thumbing him down, he's right. This did not prove anything. If anything it just reinforces that homosexuality is just as much a choice as heterosexuality. The only thing genetic, is the desire to be intimate and have companionship.
Saying that homosexuality is not a choice, is like saying my preference for chocolate soft serve is not a choice.
Say for example. I eat a orange then a tangerine. After tasting it my brain automatically hotwires that I like the tangerine more. And therefore prefering the tangerine over the orange. I am not choosing this my brain is automatically telling me this by nature. Therefore your example is truly contradicted.
I was defending his comment, but I actually it can be either. There are people who choose to be gay, and people who feel that it's natural.
I'd prefer not to say "I was born like way". That's self defeating, that's like saying "I was born with leprosy". You are still making a conscious choice if you know why you like something more. Comparing sex with men v.s sex with women is more like comparing bananas and peaches. With differences that drastic, you are conscious of your choice
@skatoolaki if i remember right bi sexuals index and ring finger lenghs are supposed to be equal or that of the straight person this study is not 100% though
I was nurtured. Between 26 years of society beating the idea of "women are beutiful" into my brain, my mother's low opinion of men, no intelligent male rolemodel in my life, & having masculine tastes in entertainment, I find myself only attracted to women & scrawny girly-looking guys with no bodily/facial hair.
My second and fourth fingers are about identical length, and it turns out I'm bisexual and genderqueer (transgender with male and female aspects). Pretty cool stuff!
It's so great to hear this stuff from a fellow Christian. We need more BioLogos Christians' voices out there. Thank you so much.
Is anybody else looking at their fingers out there ??? lol !!! I sure was glad to find out when I looked that I didn't have gay fingers... You people that just found out you have gay fingers might as well just go ahead and accept that your gay...
Loved that bit at the end! I can't really tell if either finger is longer or if they are both the same for me. It's too close to call (but I'm gay anyway)
The biggest confound in this field of research is that we can't really know if the straight twin is really straight, or less willing to accept they are gay or come out of the closet. If one twin sees the other twin come out the the family and the results are negative, the second twin may suppress/hide their desire for same sex partners. I'm not saying all identical twins HAVE TO be the same orientation, but the correlation might be much higher than we think.
The homosexual argument was settled long ago IMO with the advent of hermaphrodistic people. The evidence for evolution is really starting to be overwhelming. Look up Chuck Panazzo the bassist from Styx on Wikipedia. It is not looking good my interesting Judeo-Christian friends. I'd start pulling out the consciousness card right now if I was yous guys.
females produce a small amount of testosterone in the brain. they also produce androgen, which is a lot like testosterone. if they produced too much of one or both hormones they would become masculinized.
The discovery channel clip is only trying to explain/speculate about the potential causes of male homosexuality which is far more prevalent than female sexuality (possibly due to the fact that the default biological sex is female - a well documented scientific fact).
Family trees demonstrate an increase in male homosexuality in some families and female homosexuality in others but both are very rarely demonstrated in the same family tree. This suggests that there are different genetics involved.
To the Christians: Sexual orientation isn't a choice. I didn't choose to like girls (I knew I liked them by the time I was 4). So how can homosexuality be a choice then? Why would anyone willingly choose to be shunned by the rest of society? It makes no logical sense (like most fundamentalist beliefs unfortunately)
I came across this a few days ago. I tried to post it to theists site when asking for the gay gene but they say do not rely on science it is of man not god. It's funny how they ask for proof of homosexuality from science and when given it science is of man and not god
I know, ridiculous to even be trying to find out WHY. Who cares besides the homophobians? They can just deal with it OR we'll have to find out why some people are rednecks, some assholes, some religious freaks, etc. It will never end. What are they proposing? To analyze how much testosterone a baby has and injecting more b4 they are even born? What BS.
I'm wondering... How did they come up with accurate statistics of being gay for twins? If you have (if my source is right) only a 3.6% chance of being a twin (Not even considering the added minority of fraternal/identical), and then If there's a five percent chance of being gay as well... There's no way they could have had any large amount of persons to survey or do this research with.
Of course its natural lol i can't believe people even say its unnatural. Everything is natural.
woven in my eyes nurture is apart of nature. I am glad Djs made this video, i thought it could of had something to do with, when males become actual males.
Hopefully science will find some answers. Maybe it will shut up some religious nut cases
i dont get how people can be homophobic racist sexist etc...
If i think someones a noob i will tell them regardless of there skin sex or whatever....
Imagine that in the future it is not only possible to test a fetus using epigenetics for homosexuality, but also possible to modify the activation and deactivation of genes before birth.
Now for the question:
Should parents be allowed the choice to make a modification (not termination!) to their unborn child so as to be born heterosexual, thereby eliminating the possibility of having a homosexual child?
I'd answer "no", for two reasons, the least important one being that "messing with the model" is always risky to begin with: who knows which weird, unforeseen complications the child might be burdened with.
The second, much more important reason is that if parents start out by NOT accepting their child for what it is or will be, the child may suffer anyway, eventually- I mean: what else will these parents demand their child to conform to?
Well, a defect is just a change that people think is bad. So for example a change that makes it hard to breathe is a "defect" because we want to be able to breathe, but a change that makes you immune to HIV is good.
Whether any genetic factor in homosexuality is labeled a "defect" is a purely human choice, and depends on whether we think the result (homosexuality) is good, bad or neutral. Personally, I think it's neutral.
Red Hair isn't a birth defect, even though some people are prejudiced against gingers and violence against them has even occurred. It's merely a trait.
when i watch this all i can think of is Steve Hughes stand up skit "straight is the new gay"

@DiscoveringReligion Research has actually shown that the differences between men and women on mathematics, verbal, and writing is negligible at best. The only different may be in spatial orientation, and then the effect is only about .03 standard deviations (men do about a point or two better on indicators of spatial orientation). If anything, in fact, research tends to favor women as outperforming men.

Shavarnarak 1 year ago
@Shavarnarak
Shavarnarak 1 year ago
@Shavarnarak
Shavarnarak 1 year ago
@Shavarnarak
Shavarnarak 1 year ago
I bet that some straight people think that being gay is a choice because they are actually gay.

Hmm... interesting.

And secondly we are humans, we have intellect and reasoning which animals dont have, we know what is right and wrong, we can reflect, ponder & seek guidance, we are not like the rest of the animals
wakbangbang 1 year ago
hmmm interesting thoughts.
cwxzeng 1 year ago
People use the animal argument as a way to point out that a homosexual orientation must have a biological basis in animals because they aren't capable of choosing it. As such, it is reasonable to expect that there is a biological basis to homosexuality in humans as well.
Axion444 1 year ago
I can see where they're coming from but what about peadophilia? I'm sure if these people use the biological argument for being homosexual, they could easily use it for sexual crimes against children. I fear soon that will become a social norm too.

@Afarrell18
Doesn't the video claim, if you are male and your index and ring finger r the same length you are more likely to be heterosexual, unless you r female then your claim would be correct
wakbangbang 1 year ago
no i don't think that's what it says i watched it again and it said that if you're ring finger was longer than you're index finger you're more likely to be attracted to females. So that would mean straight male and lesbian female. But if you're index finger is longer than you're ring finger you're more likely to be attracted to males. So that would mean straight female and gay male. And i said that mine were the same length witch would mean I'm attracted to both around equally.
Afarrell18 1 year ago
ok, forgive me if I was wrong, I tried watching it a few times to make sure, but to be honest I cant be bothered to watch it again, this time round in order to elucidate my claim (plus its gettin pretty late for me), I'll just take your word for it. Nice thorough explanation not!!!
this is pure theory
the guy in the video says there are percentages but doesn't say why the percentages exist.
and 50% means half of the time, so half of all identical twins can say they're gay not!! this study is not that extensive.
there is always a point in life where you make a choice who you want to be with male or female.
And yes there are feminine straight guys and bisexuals so this study is retarded.
drcurator 2 years ago
@ drcurator. So when did you make this choice? Was it a 50-50 choice for you?
Baug1 2 years ago
@Baug1 Your just asking that so you can say that i'm really homosexual or in the closet. Answer me this, if there are people who are "gay" who fit none of the characteristics (mentally, physically or environmentally) of a stereotypical "gay person" still exist? then ask yourself why there are "bi-sexuals","a-sexuals","he-she's","tran-sexuals/genders". If you can come up with a better reason than it is a life decision, you are still high on concentrated bleach.
drcurator 2 years ago
@ drcurator. If not why?
Baug1 2 years ago 7
@Baug1 You didn't answer my question because you know those particular people chose to be that way. As far as genetics goes you can only be characterized inherited alleles which boils down to evolution inwhich sexual inadequacy would be a recessive trait (which is impossible unless it is a mental defect). And recently the APA took sexual preference off of its mental illness's
drcurator 2 years ago
@Baug1 You are so right, one cannot choose, as is often thought, to be gay, You don't wake up one day and say "Oh you know what, for the rest of my life I am going to like men" It is an inbuilt instinct that you cannot control. You are born gay hence when your sexual identity starts to develop as a teenager your programmed DNA takes over and makes you either attracted to men or women. Homosexuality is not a choice and cannot be changed. Ignorant people choose to ignore the facts! Get with it!
calasite 1 year ago
@Baug1 because its a mental illness
SaintsRow312 9 months ago
theres also a mental component to homosexuality. just look at the cases where a girl/boy was raped at an early age (usually by family) and then turns out gay. in this case a traumatic event shaped their personality and it was certainly NOT by choice. regardless this represents a small % of gays
when i was a teen i thought i was gay because of sexual repression and the retarded sexual definitions of my old religion
its turns out that i'm VERY not gay... just kinky, and theres a BIG difference
theeyeisblind 2 years ago
Choices are based on what is indoctrinated in you, less conservatives will end up gay because of a more intolerable upbringing. Also more likely to be secretly gay, or gay but openly homophobic. Someone born with a gay relative, or a more progressive household, will have more homosexuality incidents because it's not frowned upon.
SocialistReign 1 year ago
@drcurato
SocialistReign 1 year ago
@SocialistReign lol your preference is not a choice.
Say for example. I eat a orange then a tangerine. After tasting it my brain automatically hotwires that I like the tangerine more. And therefore prefering the tangerine over the orange. I am not choosing this my brain is automatically telling me this by nature. Therefore your example is truly contradicted.
vinceguntr0n 1 year ago
@vinceguntr0n

The biggest confound in this field of research is that we can't really know if the straight twin is really straight, or less willing to accept they are gay or come out of the closet. If one twin sees the other twin come out the the family and the results are negative, the second twin may suppress/hide their desire for same sex partners. I'm not saying all identical twins HAVE TO be the same orientation, but the correlation might be much higher than we think.

females produce a small amount of testosterone in the brain. they also produce androgen, which is a lot like testosterone. if they produced too much of one or both hormones they would become masculinized.

Androgen is a generic term. Which androgens do you mean?
musekiteer 2 years ago
The discovery channel clip is only trying to explain/speculate about the potential causes of male homosexuality which is far more prevalent than female sexuality (possibly due to the fact that the default biological sex is female - a well documented scientific fact).
Family trees demonstrate an increase in male homosexuality in some families and female homosexuality in others but both are very rarely demonstrated in the same family tree. This suggests that there are different genetics involved.
xXarkyleXx 2 years ago
Perhaps they were exposed to testosterone while in the womb? They definitely should have addressed that in the video.

If you have (if my source is right) only a 3.6% chance of being a twin (Not even considering the added minority of fraternal/identical), and then If there's a five percent chance of being gay as well... There's no way they could have had any large amount of persons to survey or do this research with.

Gaawachan 2 years ago
Consider this:
Imagine that in the future it is not only possible to test a fetus using epigenetics for homosexuality, but also possible to modify the activation and deactivation of genes before birth.
Now for the question:
Should parents be allowed the choice to make a modification (not termination!) to their unborn child so as to be born heterosexual, thereby eliminating the possibility of having a homosexual child?
MultiSteveB 2 years ago
Interesting question!

Not to be negative or against gays. But, would this effect be a form of defect, such as a birth defect? Or is just a way that people are different?
dprague 2 years ago
Well, a defect is just a change that people think is bad. So for example a change that makes it hard to breathe is a "defect" because we want to be able to breathe, but a change that makes you immune to HIV is good.
Whether any genetic factor in homosexuality is labeled a "defect" is a purely human choice, and depends on whether we think the result (homosexuality) is good, bad or neutral. Personally, I think it's neutral.
simplic10 2 years ago
Red Hair isn't a birth defect, even though some people are prejudiced against gingers and violence against them has even occurred. It's merely a trait.
doomduckie 2 years ago
It could also simply be genetic expression, since even identical twins may express the same genes differently.
