While some of the finer nuances are lost in translation (I'm a native German speaker) this translation is delightful, and refreshing to hear in English. Why should people miss out on Opera, Poetry, Literature, Philosophy, Ancient Scripture and Sacred Texts, just because they were once written in a now silent, lost or foreign tongue? I LOVE this performance!
Ahora preferimos las óperas en original, lo cual es una "novedad". Durante muchísimo tiempo se cantó cada ópera en el idioma local del lugar donde se representara. No se escandalicen tanto.
Yes. They shortened and translated it to attract families to the performance. I think they did a great job, although I do miss the missing parts. But what a great way to introduce kids to the opera!
ew. i HATE this in english. it just loses something. i would die if i had to sing papageno in english. thank god we're using german in our productino.
That's a shame. Most singers would be happy to have the work. And when you do your research (as I assume you will?) you'll find that Mozart and others would ALWAYS translate their operas into the local language in order to get people to come.
Yes, I will do research for the role(and have): thank you for your doubt. Second, I didn't know Die Zauberflote was perfomed outside of a German-speaking area during Mozart's lifetime. Third, there is something very GERMAN about the character of Papageno (i'm an actor-singer, not the other way around, so i tend to focus intensley on the character). I think it does a dis-service to the character. he loses something when put into english. I didn't say i WOULDN'T do it, just it's not my preference.
As fun as some (some) of the costumes are, the use of the phrase, "Wiggle wag" just epitomizes the inanity of this production. As "Weia! Waga!" teaches us, nonsensical gibberish only works in languages besides English.
here they immediately cut to the presentation of the flute after the part "die schloss soll deine warnung sein" (i guess, "this lock should warn you not to try"), but they missed "bekaemen doch die luegner alle, ein solches schloss vor ihren mund; statt hass, verleumdung, schwarzer galle, bestuende lieb und bruderbund".
it translates to something along the lines of "if only all liars received such a lock upon their mouth, then hate, slander and black gall would turn to love and brotherhood"
Yes, they cut quite a bit out, not just in this scene. They cut Papageno's and Pamina's duet, which is a shame because it's so beautiful. It was done on purpose to shorten the opera so younger kids could sit through it.
that's awful! i'm all for making opera accessible to kids, but it sounds like they're butchering it. maybe i'm just a traditionalist, but i'm happy with die zauberfloete the way it was written.
Thanks for all your help Luindriel, I truly appreciate it!! Would you mind watching me video and giving me some constructive critisism? I could really use some..Oh and I atch your videos almost everyday- thanks for such great videos!!
Its dont get better than Nathan Gunn :) Do you know of any other operas he was in? Ive been looking him up and it surprising there arent many videos of him. Especially in concerts or recitals..Ill keep looking, but any help or link would be appreciated. Thanks for the video!!
He's in a video of War and Peace. There's a clip here on YouTube somewhere. He was in a movie called "Man on the Moon" that was broadcast on TV in England a few months ago. There must be amateur video out there - surely his parents have a few, lol! I think you can find the DVD of Magic Flute (this very same version) for sale on Ebay. If I ever get my hands on any other videos of him performing I'll be sure to post some choice clips! :)
I have the whole thing so I can probably snip that out and post it if it's not too big. Might take a while as they've been cracking down on our internet usage at work... don't they know that YouTube is integral to my job?? LOL!
I have lots of moments for you!! But for some reason my computer at work no longer plays the dvd because I'm missing a codec whatever that is... and I can't download and add programs or parts of programs... but trust me I tried! My computer at home plays the dvd but I don't have a video capture program... So we're all stuck. Sorry!
me just love dis stuff where can i get a dvd of this oprea

this is shortened ... after "this lot should warn you not to try" ought to come the part with the liars, not the flute already ...

Es klingt doch einfach besser auf Deutsch, oder? Das amerikanische R bekommt der Musik nicht besonders wohl.

Heh heh you don't like 'wiggle wag...' I can see where you're coming from but I disagree that the entire production is inane.

Do you have "O Zittre Nicht" from the same performance? I'm assuming that it's "Do not Tremble" or something along those lines in English.
It's the queen's first aria. Would love to see it!
