2x back to back? Me thinks some lines aren't perfectly even. I'm more pissed @the second instructor. He allowed his charge to remove her goggles, endangering her vision for life.
Ever done 120MPH in a car, or on a motorcycle? Imagine lifting the visor up @speed. The wind blast alone can rip a cornea. If there's an insect that hits your eye @that speed. It will destroy the eye. Are you willing to be blinded for life by removing your goggles?
@neomuttley hey no problem i agree with you.. i was thinking about insects or something too (are they flying this high ?) don't like unresponsible TMs..
You'd rather risk blindness over a few welts? My first skydive? I wore a heavy hunting shirt w/those plastic reinforcing tabs on the collars. I'd pulled them up because it was really cold. Those tabs proceeded to beat my jaw mercilessly @120MPH... For her instructor to allow that was inexcusable. A couple of marks on your cheek will heal. Corneal transplants are only temporary, & decidedly unpleasant. Major eye trauma is irreparable. You decide.
What are the odds of two identical failures back to back? W/an experienced handler packing the chute. I'd say "Remote." (Past)Time to go back to where you bought that thing.
I blame body position! HAHAH jk... you buying your reserve packer his fav bottle of hard stuff? Or is he giving you a discount now? lol Glad your safe!
Do I miss something here, or is the only problem in this vid that the cords are twisted? I'm on a beginners course right now, supposed to jump on next thursday, and we're being taught that when that happens you just pull the cords apart and kick until the twists unwrap, unless you're lower than 600 meters (=2000 ft). My mate jumped last week, and this happened to him as well.
Hi performance (elliptical) canopies behave different in line twists. They have a tendency to spiral very hard, making it difficult if not impossible to kick out of twists. I estimate I was pulling more than 3G's. If you look closely you can see the sun go by at about 2 revs per second.
@vidjumper I would have chopped that mess to. When in doubt "Whip It Out" I fly a 215 main so my line twist aren't anything compared to that. I look forward to downsizing as I progress. Blue Skies!!!
That's scary, how often do these things fail anyway? It can't be that rare if there's videos of it all over Youtube. That's scary, having to depend on your reserve. What if that fails too? Guaranteed death. I think you should have the option to carry 2 reserve chutes.
Lol no problem. Actually, me and my girlfriend are planning on skydiving. Still, I would rather carry 2 reserves with me just incase my main and first reserve fail.
yeah the main canopy "might" malfunction here or there. it depends on pack job quality, body position, size(smaller more twitchy). reserves usually dont go bad. ive got over 500+ no cutaways. hope you have fun
I would have been so pissed that I had to pay for 2 pack jobs and being grounded for 2 weekends when the manufacturer screwed my canopy up. I bet you were sitting there on the ground staring at your canopy going WTF?
Glad to see both reserve rides went well... I remember after downsizing a couple of times, I still had the Smart-190 as a reserve, and when that thing opened on me, it was so slow I could barely fly it...hahaha
line twists on a small canopy are relatively common and due to the size cause extemely bad spins like in your video,on a 200+canopy size line twists are simply kicked out.i will never understand why people use such small canopys.
This is why I dont fly fully eliptical mains. There are some "semi-eliptic" mains on the market (I am not naming manufactures here) which are not that susceptible to line twists, but still give you a good dive when you pull the toggles hard. Of cause these can malfuction the same way, but they should do it less often.
I don't know too many jumpers (with the exception of pro videographers) who use high profile cameras anymore. I wouldn't hesitate keeping my skyhook in for a low spin. It's possible he had one and just disconnected before cutting. He had altitude.
That canopy looks like an old Perche. They stopped producing many years ago. You can see the risers are asyemtrically, which is not the fault of a line trim.
Yes, it was a Perche...I have a few thousand jumps on them. We found the lines to be out of trim and shipped it back to the manufacturer. If you know anyone who has specs on the Perche, please let me know...I have a 135 I'd like to get line trim specs for.
Was there a Steven's deployment system installed during your cutaway? Due to the added drama of line twists spinning a jumper at cutaway, I avoided adding one to my rig.
It turned out to be a manufacturing error. The lineset was not evenly tensioned during cutting. Consequently during the deployment loading, one side stretched causing the linetwist. My wingloading was about 1.8 No way I could kick out of them. The students goggles started coming off early in the skydive.
Youre a fuckin stud i would have shit my pants and died
