That's not a leak. You can always see that turbulent flow around the aft dome of the external tank.
In any case, the Challenger accident wasn't caused by a fuel leak; it was caused by an SRB joint not sealing properly when the motor pressurized. This was partly a result of low air temperatures in Florida that morning, but NASA had observed SRB joint sealing problems on warm weather flights, as well.
@tytlyf Actually the fueling is completed and done more than 3 hours before launch. The engines are continually venting liquid oxygen all the way until engine start and the vent arm on the top of the External Tank stays in place until 2 minutes before launch.
watching the whole thing from start to finish with ASFX replacing Atlantis gave me the shiver's!!! I will post launch updates as they come a long! Still holding around 1:20
1:00 is the best. Retraction of ST buying restrictions underway! Once TDA releases their grasp, all engines GO!!! Skip to 1:12 when TDA removes restrictions. Wait and watch for purging of PR's, confirmed, ASR to the moon and beyond! mark this date!
'Booster Ignition and LIFTOFF of Atlantis on a mission to study planet Earth'
This flight studied..looked at the earth's atmosphere, the ozone layer, pollution effects, etc..with some instruments in the cargo bay and a free-flying satellite with instruments mounted on it..the satellite was released and later retrieved on this flight.
Lisa Malone is the woman's voice you hear during the countdown "the weather at Kennedy is GO" "In the next few seconds thousands of gallons of water will be dump on the platform" up until "Booster Ignition and LIFTOFF of Atlantis on a mission to study planet Earth" look around you'll find other launches with her voice. NASA Public Affairs Officer-spokesperson/commentator-they have them at each of the respective NASA centers.
Yes, James Hartsfield is a NASA Public Affairs Officer in other words a commentator-NASA commentator-he is in Mission Control in Houston. In this launch here, he is the guy you hear after the shuttle lifts off "Houston now controlling Atlantis underway on its 13th trip to space rolling on course......" You'll hear him in some of these other launch vids on here.
STS-66 November 3, 1994--one of my all-time favorite launches--thank you for putting this up. And with different camera views than I saw on CNN when i watched this launch in 1994. Great shots. Looks how white and clean Atlantis looks--it had just come back from a modification period in Calif. NASA Public Affairs commentary by Lisa Malone followed by James Hartsfield.
