Really i don't think For immigrants have to learn English unless they are living in a company of a American citizen my friend is French and he moved here in 2009 and he was asked to learn English but said, "Does it really matter what you speak in America? If then they want to understand my language simple just take the langauge and study about what simple words mean or simple ask some one who understands."

Most people here seem to be mixing things up. Immigrants learning the language of their country of destination should not be an issue at all. If they don't learn it their chances of succeeding become meagre. All this has nothing to do with Americans "need to learn a foreign language". They don't if the live in the US, unless their job/school requires it or they feel like it. They're different situations.

In great britains, about 25% of the population speaks french. Studying a foreign language is common in Europ. In United State... only a minority speaks a foreign language. Today, it's very important to know many languages basis.

On the other hand, immigrants MUST learn the language of the country they chose to live in. Bottom line, there's no comparison between our insisting on immigrants having to learn a foreign language and Americans residing in the US.

The problem is, this video suggests that learning a foreign language is something suspicious, something like not being 100% American. Actually, learning foreign languages could help Americans to know more about the world, and it is widely known that many Americans can't answer elementary questions on world's geography, history and politics.

If Americans still think that English alone is enough to survive, yes I agree, perhaps only in USA and UK, Aust and NZ, where people are predominantly monolingual. The rest of the world are learning English other than the fact they are already fluent in at least their native tongue. Most of educated popn in Europe, Asia can speak at least 2-3 langs. To compete for jobs in the world stage, Eng is a must but increasingly, employers are asking for a 2nd or even 3rd lang.

It was revealed that Obama speaks the Bahasa melayu and Arabic. And there was a video of him speaking in Spanish. He did French in school but was not really gd at it. Heard he got a D. Well, at least when he says americans can't speak foreign languages other than English, he speaks at least more than one. There're more bilingual speakers these days than monolingual ones. China's bilingual population, though still a small % , is still in the millions in terms of absolute numbers.

I'm american and I speak French German and o.k. Russian. There is nothing wrong with speaking a foreign language. In fact I'm an infantry soldier stationed in Germany I can say that americans do expect people to speak english no matter where they are and yes it is humiliating. You don't need to speak German to travel around Germany. I actually tried engaging Germans in conversations and they preferred to practice their English instead. Germans fluent in English prefer to speak in English because it takes less energy and doesn't need to be as specific.
