1986 - I like the idea that this song could be about a bugchaser who wants to catch the HIV virus. He has a deathwish. A thrill chaser who loves the danger.....
If I remember correctly the Infected album video won Golden Globe or some such award at the time...brilliant album and brilliant video. Still as solid as it was back then.
its funny i nvr thought of Matt Johnson as being a 'brilliant' singer - very so-so (no color, timbre, delivery or depth whatsoever), a capable songwriter (very 1 dimensional, concept-obsessed and oddly for an electronic project - undanceable), but a rather talented Arranger (spacious, balanced, harmonized, fully-realized in sound, shape and execution). wld fetch as a producer more than product. allmusic agrees.
How sad that even now when the differences between the major political parties is less than that of a Rizla silver paper, people are still arguing along the lines of party political affiliations. They're all singing from the same Elite penned songbook. The time has come for us to stop playing by the rules the Elite have imposed on us, which have worked so well for them but at what a cost to the rest of us. Fight the power!
Matt had some foresight, he was singing about war in arabia and the downfall of Saddam Hussein, before most of us had even heard of him. Infected is one of my favourite albums ever. Went to see 'The The' in the Royal Festival Hall some years ago now and Matt described himself as 'An angry young man'. Great gig.
When i was a D.J. & also threw house parties this is one of the songs i remembered playing, back then, now i found it again here of course, have not heard this in ten years easy, thanks for posting!!!
Few albums have such an affect on you, this one did, remember comin home late one night, and channel 4 played the whole thing! Got it the next day, still enjoy listening to it 25 yrs down the line, it's class.
I was listening to infected today and it is more relevant today than it was in 1986 when it was released! Strange that the tories are in again like they were in 86! When I left school in 82 there were 3 million on the dole and we were thatchers children. Now the tories want to pay private companies to get people back into work. We had the Youth Opportunity Programme when we were working a 40hr week for £25.00! just to keep the unemployment figures down! Strange how we have come full circle.
@billee19 There is one massive difference! We were young and idealistic then and thought we could smash the Tories. Now I realise that there's more wankers who will vote for them than they can make unemployed! They won an election in '87 with 3M on the dole and will run the next election with about the same! "Heartland"!
@DrewMurray1874 And who put them out of work this time? Oh yeah, the fucked up administrations of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Thatcher looks good compared to those lying shitbags.
@billee19 bollocks-Thatcher go elected in '79-Heath and Callaghans children more like- as usual the cons take the shit for socialists and now we come full circle-strange that. The The rule btw
@lmlOoOlml Thatcher was elected in 1979 and I left school in 1982 so I was very much one of Thatcher's children! and was on one of Thatcher's great schenes to reduce unemployment called the Youth Opportunity Programme, So save your bollocks for someone else! Thatcher stayed in until 1990.
@MoveOnSoulClub where did I say i was a tory? does calling out socialism/saying it as it is make me a tory? Does liking some music make me politically aligned?
@billee19 Don't get me wrong, I'm not a tory but there would have been even more on the dole if Labour were in power, you can be damn sure of that. Britain was in bad shape in the 80's and teenage/art student rebellion aside, they did a fairly good job of reinvigorating the economy. It really matters not nowadays however, as the top 3 parties are all carbon copies of each other.
@shadowfire211 lmao yeah I found it hard to find This is the Day when I first searched cos it assumed The the was a mistake ofcourse lol I mean nice pisstake on band names in one sense but in the sense of looking them up a bloody pain the arse lol

@AccyRed Mind Bomb is the 4th album by Matt Johnson & The The, released July 11, 1989 and recorded between October 1988 and May 1989. The song "Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)" contains the lyrics Islam is rising The Christians mobilising The world is on it's elbows and knees It's forgotten the message And worships the creeds
Thanks for posting this video, i love the music and the creativity of Matt Johnson. I have all his records and i love them. They are great and powefull.
Matt Johnson, what a wanker he is,on this album he is constantly slating America but where does he piss off to as soon as possible,America.I threw this in the bin along time ago.
@spookyomansions1 ,yes maybe so ,but thats not what i meant. He comes across as the big anti american but darts acroos the atlantic as soon as he is able, what a hypocrite.
@bazzatheblue fair point, can't argue with you on that one, probably like most people though in that he likes the country, but has complete and utter contempt for the political system, you can understand that.
@bazzatheblue , It's about American politics, take a look around you? Are we all getting along... if you say yes, I'd open your mind as well, not just your eyes.
@bazzatheblue His lyrics are against the policies of US politics, not America as a nation and not American citizens as people. I hate the present government in the UK but that doesn't stop me living here or loving the people. I really don't see the hypocracy
@bazzatheblue ... Then his assessment is correct, when America and Americans, cannot be criticized and held, for their total lack of self respect, and responsibility it promotes when being "free", so called "Americans" are quick to retaliate. We are not immune to stupidity, obviously... It's not such a great country, when people think they have a right to be an asshole, and still think they can get away with it, without retort. Actually more of the Album is about the UK.
Islam is too demanding for a Westerner like myself to ever inscribe to, so is Christianity, for that matter! How, by the the way did we ever get on this troubling subject?Religious identity separates and destroys.
The album should be re-released. There's nothing this powerful out at the moment. Would make a great antidote to Lady Gaga. Please record company peeps, re-release this

This amazing video was shown on Channel 4 in the early days of the channel - when it was still considered 'revolutionary' (the channel I mean). You can't even get it on DVD now! Hello wake up!
ive made this comment before but i heard he fell over bumped his bonce and woke up a born again christian and can now be found bashing bibles in shopping centres truth or lies? you decide.still good tunes though.pie out
All I will say is...MJ was a visionary,he sort of said that the world would change,Islam is rising etc etc, back in 88-89,here we are in 2010,get my drift
Matt is the soundest bloke on earth btw, love him and everything he has ever done
I first heard Infected in 1986, when I was 15. Matt's songs are so well written and orchestrated that even 24 years later, infected sounds fresh. Yes, some of the songs are very political, but it is pretty amazing that he could channel his anger into making such great songs!!! The Best albums for me are Infected, Soul Mining and Mind Bomb. I never got hold of burning blue soul and Dusk has a couple of good songs on it, but not like those three. Wish he would get upset about the current Govt
The first time I heard 'Infected' was on channel 4,way back when, showin my age now :O
I was a Thethe fan before that,I had Soul Mining and Burning blue soul on vinyl, wish I still had the original BBS,worth a bomb now
ALWAYS loved everything by MJ,like I have said b4,the guy is a visionary and a really nice bloke,I had the pleasure in Liverpool in 1993 or thereabouts, really sound guy,I still listen to Thethe and it still gets BETTER every time I hear it
Originally it was a singular effort from Matt Johnson! (hence the original titling of the vinyl 33rpm!)
It is so full of MJ's hopes, dreams and fears, without being too self-indulgent (the guy was diagnosed with a blindness disease, don't know much more than that!)
It's Matt Johnson's poetry, basically (and a diary of how he felt at that time) and is perhaps his greatest work! Don't discount it if you're into The The!
@AccyRed Mind Bomb is the 4th album by Matt Johnson & The The, released July 11, 1989 and recorded between October 1988 and May 1989. The song "Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)" contains the lyrics

Think you'll find we did, around 85/86 there was a huge tv campaign on UK tv, John Hurt did voice over "AIDS IS EVERYONES PROBLEM". (also Rock Hudson died 85/aids).??
@narval59 what you on? aids was 1st talked about on tv in the UK 1980 i remember the big fuck off so called slabs of gravestone with the word AIDS written into it. basically telling us if your gay your damned to hell.
Matt Johnson was THE THE BEST!!! Great voice, well written songs, funcky sound... watched all this "infected" video , over and over, and over at 13 yrs old!! It was important, groundbreaking stuff that has stood the time test. Only Erasure are equal to my mind. thanks for posting
THE THE are / is the best BAND of the later 20 th Centuary to come from UK and still be relevant today. I just can`t see another in todays Music Industry finding anything near as good, especially with facist karaoke brain wash TV moguls in control, don`t believe me?, look at them trying to stop the re-release of "rage against the machine" coz they know it will go straight to number 1, instead of a Butlins Talent Competition winner!.
@axelusul Simon Cowell should be banned, he is stifling real expression in music, all the artists he produces are just clones of his previous drivel, all his shows are tired and dreary now, he needs to retire and give music a chance to recover.
Cheers for the comment BlackHammer766, it must be like living in a Orwellian Night-mare for Artists trying to start out. Small venues, pubs and Label Scouts are almost non-existant. I guess we may have to go through some musical "crucible" before it gets better, vote for the Birdy Song to be a national anthem thats next.... Cheers

23 years ago I was at high school when I first heard this... inspired me to want to go to Bolivia. Haven't made it there yet, but am still impressed by this song! Video directed by Peter Christopherson. You might know him as Sleazy from Coil?
It was a great video. My brother has it and I copied it to dvd. They should release Infected on DVD. I've looked everywhere on the net and cant find it :(

I agree , no such thing as aids, infect me with your love, was just what it said, no underlying meanings.
They were a great band for a while at least :)

All I will say is...MJ was a visionary,he sort of said that the world would change,Islam is rising etc etc, back in 88-89,here we are in 2010,get my drift
Matt is the soundest bloke on earth btw, love him and everything he has ever done
AccyRed 2 years ago 15

Don't miss out on Burning Blue Soul!

Islam is rising.
The Christians mobilising.
The world is on it's elbows and knees.
It's forgotten the message.
And worships the creeds.

I remember buying the 12" version of this...class! Any truth in the rumour that the song is about AIDS?
33peteb 2 years ago
the album was out in 1986 !! we didn't talk about aids at this time !
narval59 2 years ago
Think you'll find we did, around 85/86 there was a huge tv campaign on UK tv, John Hurt did voice over "AIDS IS EVERYONES PROBLEM". (also Rock Hudson died 85/aids).??

fuck off u bent cunt
MegaCozzy 1 year ago
@narval59 what you on? aids was 1st talked about on tv in the UK 1980 i remember the big fuck off so called slabs of gravestone with the word AIDS written into it. basically telling us if your gay your damned to hell.
Tyron912 9 months ago
@Tyron912 yep i know i was wrong in date ! well it's quiet old !!!.
narval59 8 months ago
It is perhaps representational of that period!
They were all dropping off like flies and there was no proper medication to save them!
As per, in the video, MJ is boxed off in his "Man-Cage" A small token of how people living with this illness feel, even today!
Like second rate citizens, misunderstood and forever feared!
Humanity is an understatement!
It no longer exists when it treats people like this!
Like lepers!!!!

The The are one of the few UK bands who have some musical integrity left. Political, forward thinking and original.
Other UK acts who seem to promote original and artistic music are the likes of
Massive Attack, Tricky, David Bowie,
Gary Newman, Kate Bush, Unkle, AllFlaws,
Scroopius Pip.
True art and music x

Why was Matt Black never 'picked up' as a recording star. I know Paula Geldof interviewed him, but we never heard of him again. Why?

BlackHammer766 2 years ago 2
Cheers for the comment BlackHammer766, it must be like living in a Orwellian Night-mare for Artists trying to start out. Small venues, pubs and Label Scouts are almost non-existant. I guess we may have to go through some musical "crucible" before it gets better, vote for the Birdy Song to be a national anthem thats next.... Cheers

Problem is, when you get rid of a "drug dealer!" aka Simon Cowell, another three or four crappy record producers will crop up and corner the British Market as they have been doing now for decades!
And as long as there are junkies for standard, repetetive musical offal (usually kids with no mind of their own!) this stuff will continue to be in demand, (in mainstream terms!)
