ok so i have been obsesed with tom waits since i was like 2 because that is my dad's favorite artisit ever! This was one of my favorite of his songs. but i always thought when i was little that he was like grimace from mcdonalds only covered in worms which i feared majorly. its weird to see him as a person and not some purple wormy monster.
no, you're not pretentious because you dislike waits. This statement (as well as your reasons for posting the first) make you pretentious. ...and kind of an ass.

What I love about Waits is his sound and his lyrics are really absract without being pretentious and how he does that is he seems like he just has fun making music. Maybe even more than we like listening to him.
The ship is sinking. This song has some hard lyrics. Actually this music is like shock humor, I look around and see what others are thinking about it.
tom waits is one of the most original artists ever. I dont know how you think this song has some major political meaning about bush or thats its pop. tom waits was never pop the only songs of his to become famous were covered by rod stewart. and why do you complain if you think its pop? you seem to think a bands talent is based on radio play
Tom Waits is not pop, nor does he seek to appeal to the swarms of braindead teeny boppers that listen to the plastic pop garbage that gets played on radio. He does his own thing, he's done it for decades and many people enjoy it.
Go back to your Avril Lavigne and leave us to enjoy our superior music in peace.
You dont "get" him at all. Your lack of musical knowledge only allows you to "get" fairly simply music. Keep studying and listening and you will "graduate" from him like me. He is pretty bad to be honest.
There's nothing wrong with simple music. As for "studying" and listening, I've done that and continue to do it on regular basis; I happen to be a professional musician.
If I don't "get" anything on here, it's what you're banging on about. But then I doubt you know yourself what you're on about. You come across like the guy in the cinema queue behind Woody Allen in "Annie Hall"! lol
being a professional musician doesn't make you a musician mate... Jimi Hendrix wasn't a professional guitarist.... and boy he could he play that guitar couldn't he?
Music is more than what they teach you in expensive schools ...
Simply brilliant. If people don't get Tom I wonder why they bother they waste their time to post their negativity on here. They're hardly going to change the minds of those of us who do get him!

I hear him on the radio sometimes. You just have to know what radio stations to listen to. Public radio (PRI and NPR stations) usually play him and other cool stuff too.
This guy is pretty neat. He's definitely something you dont hear everyday that I'm sure if you did, he could become quite popular among blues type crowd.
'Who are the ones who we kept in charge? Killers, Thieves and Lawyers!...God's Away...God's Away...God's Away On Business...Business...Ha!"
It's regular radio's loss they don't play his music. What hypocrites. They played Dylan, and he didn't have silky smooth vocals either. Corporate bullshit indeed. I play him on my show.

Tom Waits came in by rodent to Area 51 and had high radiation exposure while figuring himself out. Decided he was a nothing, a certified loser, so he came up with burnt vocal chords and Kerouac-Posing. Not a single original idea in any of his horseshit. Turn off the gas Waits before you light up...

My washing-machine has a better voice than this dirtbag! Losers on youtube eat this crap up. He's a poser who'll probably smoke himself one of these days when he wakes up.
Tom Waits is a true American Artist, one of the few left in this maze of mediocraty that we call a country. He fits into the category of prestigious figures that will live on forever through their music, i.e., Bob Dylan, The Beatles, David Byrne, James Taylor, etc. A true shame that more of you (the people in general) don't recognize this.
im totaly bias , anything i see or hear of him gives me butterflies, reminds me of the concert in Milan in july, the only time i've shed a flow of tears, during the 'All the world is green' ...top number concerts of all times, 2 nights in a row...still amazed ..
Well, I'm 47 and have seen a few shows in my time (not Waits), but that one was the greatest. It was a long miserable drive to Atlanta on the 4th weekend, but completely worth it. We had a 19th floor room facing downtown and Centenial Park. We watched the fireworks from our own private balcony. And the Fox was spectacular. It was Tom's last stateside show of the tour and he sang as if he didn't have to save his voice for anything else. Full on, no holds barred, awesome.
Jeni and I had the chance to see Tom in Atlanta at the Fox Theater. It was the show of a lifetime. Simply incredible. But Jeni cracks me up. Before the show she said she hoped Tom did that song "Concentrate on Business." I liked to peed my pants laughing.
So dark, so back alley Paris cabaret (and I love that!). Kind of reminds me of a female Grace Jones, here, though he is hardly that. I adore Tom Waits. Now that would be really something - Tom Waits singing nightclubbling. From Iggy, to Grace, to you. In any case, I think this is great. I 've always believed that music shoud "do something" and this does.
Well, I can can kind of understand her. How the heck do you play a song into the ground? I can understand the mechanism, but WHY would you do that? Yeah, it would have driven me insane, too. But props on the technique!
