  • give someone a handheld they'll make 'movies' with delusions of ever earning money doing it, give them maya, and you get this kind of thing.

  • jaime ses for on entre toute suite dans l histoire

  • Nice way to treat your mother, kid.

  • This is bad -> blocked.

  • and this is when the guitar was invented.

  • 1:34 is that "horse" sneezing crack?

  • 70s animation style

  • wow

  • NOW THAT'S FUCKIN ART!! GREAT ANIMATION

  • A beautiful way of story telling.

  • What is this animation made of? I can't understand how it was done, it's just amazing, touching and beautiful! Congrats.

  • @Ethnagei I'd guess that they used Flash or Toon Boom to animate the characters and After FX or Final Cut to create the transition effects. I'd also guess that they used some classical 2d animation, y'know, the frame by frame thing, to do the fishes and then added a granulated filter.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong. :D

  • new kind a sad video. nice one. i like it!

  • Kurwa, czemu oni/one / ono maja tak wypiete dupska ?!

  • 2:25 SURPRISE BUTT SEXS!

  • and also i'm not heartless i just think that it was very boring, and also whats up with all these animations on youtube being depressing and freaky, like a room full of emos are brainstorming and one goes " i got it! starving africans!, it will be a huge hit!" and another stands up and says " we should also have death and a child seperated from his mother!" " BRILLIANT"!

  • at 1:50 the sexond guy walks in at first with an arrow but then it disappears. a little mess up.

  • @philyphil96 what?

  • Thoz peplez hd masive bts.

  • how long is this depress- oh, :(

  • it makes me cry :(

  • All these little films are depressing and thought-provoking about many subjects we rarely touch upon by ourselves. I like them!

  • what the hell did he hit her for?!

  • @MrGenericCola

For drinking all the water. <_< I'd beat the crap out of that guy.

  • @deatXbyXchocolate335 that was horrible D:

  • @versusINK

Him hitting that woman? I know! Makes me so angry!

  • @deatXbyXchocolate335 One thing I don't get is why did the woman died? It can't be thirst he just drank like 10 gallons of water so she must have died from hunger, after all, the title is call "HUNGU" which makes sense.

  • @Shootyrain103

I think the entire tribe was dying from the lack of water... and food. The woman was drank all the water and I guess she was revitalized? But then that guy hit her on the head and that probably did her in.. along with the hunger. I think it was more the head trauma that killed her than the hunger. HUNGU could also be implying something deeper besides the lack of food.

  • Hey! I remember my communications teacher showing me this.

  • Wonderful work............xxx

  • Don't they use that instrument with capoeira?

  • racism?no just preferences!

  • It tells so much, just without words.

  • Quite as kept, I'd like to beat the crap out that guy.........Woman Warrior

  • :O LOVE ITTTTTTTTTT

  • I absolutely loved it, great job.

  • Ew, they're drinking tears. loljk

  • idk what this really mean but i seem that a mother sacrific will do to comfort or to love her child with out regrets leaving behind that needs of comfort for the child but to grow up soon or later

  • Hmmm, moving.

  • Amazing work

  • jesus christ this is OUTSTANDING!!! -DJ Oxygen

  • his playing him mom . that just sick

  • @ carllewenski

You are a racist idiot. People who think like you only create and prove stereotypes without any thought of what your words actually mean. If the only things you have to say are things that are clearly and blatantly offensive to entire races, maybe you should stop talking.

  • @CarlLewenski

I'm Ethiopian and I lived in largely black neighborhood in London for a few years and I did not see the behavior you're talking about. I -do- listen to Hip Hop for the lyrics. While mainstream hip hop is awful, underground hip hop has plenty of intellectual and socially conscious messages.(cont.)

  • @TheGravitationist i like black people - they re very talented - such things as hiphop culture and capoeira will not exist without them! white people are not greater than black or asian! the real enemy is inside us and it is called ignorance, but the answer is love and respect! big ups for all the races, every human can offer something precious and beautiful for the others, and every race gave something great to the world! and this film is a great piece of art! peace!

  • @CarlLewenski

Also, I'm not fond of the way you group all black people together. You bring up a point about crime and while I am aware that incarceration rates among black people in America are high, no matter how you slice it, criminals are still in the minority. Also, the prisons would be a lot less crowded were it not for the war on drugs.

  • @CarlLewenski HA!LOL! I'm sorry but this is to funny. OK First what the hell does this have to do with this piece and second why do people feel like youtube is a place to rant about their hate and racism. You don't like black people ha who cares. As a black woman I'm not offended I just feel really sorry for you. You're just as despicable as those uh blacks you grew up with. ha!!!

  • @CarlLewenski I'm trying to determine why you would use your real name to identify yourself when you post such ignorant garbage under a thoughtful and well-designed piece such as Hungu.

  • @CarlLewenski Personally, I hate people from Iceland! Like Bjork! Give me a break! "All Is Full of Love" my ASS. I wouldn't turn my back on Bjork. She'd kill you where you stand. She'd slit your throat in your sleep and make up a song about it and record it near a volcano! Talk about violent!

  • @CarlLewenski Personally, I prefer the Swedish. Sure, their not as smart as the Icelandics (because the blonde hair doesn't protect them from the sun's more dangerous rays), but they are more friendly ~ UNLESS YOU DON'T SHOP AT IKEA!

Anyway, I hate Icelandics! There I said it! It needed to be said.

  • Wonderful! A piece of art. Thank you (Ricardo, from Argentina)

  • Nice movie i just think it leaves too much to wonder making it incomplete.... My own view tho....

  • Oooohhhhh I don't see

  • sooooo he's playing his mom

  • @kai2516 AAHAHAHAHA you made me laugh so hard!

  • @kai2516 his love for his mother and what she had experienced made him to use the arch for other purposes, rather than killing.

he plays the grief of his society!

  • @kai2516

well thanks for spoiling it you asshat

  • @MolotovDaSkwerl no thanks : )

  • @kai2516 Ahahaha you're so funny for SPOILING IT, you ass.

  • @RedRedFortune why thank you

  • @kai2516 :|

  • I don't like the message behind all of this. I don't like ignorance and ideology.

That eye bothers me. That eye is dangerous.

  • its about the hungu instrument and the deeply meaning of it

  • I'm not quite sure I understand the part with the water...

  • @vradix013 you understand the rest?? xD

  • i love depressing short films it reflects my life immensly.

  • i... am... chocked O.O

  • Great. That we are...humans

  • what the fuck

  • The leader was an a**hole

  • hrlla sad

  • 0_o...............................

  • omg sad but wth was up with the monkey cows

  • the textures look brilliant, the decomposition is so sad, how she was so weak too :/

what a sad world for those with no water and food.

  • the child has made an instrument out of his mother's remains!?!? aaah whaaaat!

  • @catroolz It''s a metaphor, he didn't literally make it out of her remains.

  • this is one tough monkey tribe

  • isnt that an instrument that capoeira use to use??

  • i dont get it, is this like the cycle of life or somthing?

  • The brazilian's Berimbau.

  • Very good short film well done

  • why are the 3 of these i watched all depressing

  • @XxKo3dxX "Drama is easy. Comedy is hard."

  • @XxKo3dxX it independt they never supposed to have happy endings ever

  • @XxKo3dxX The way I see it. It's a break from the normal "Good>Evil" kinda theme. There are more "Good>Evil" than there are the other way around. So to make something "depressing" is a bit newer. I personally prefer these types over the normal fairy-tail kinda thing.

  • @XxKo3dxX its art i think

  • @XxKo3dxX

    Awards

  • @XxKo3dxX i guess u should expect it to be depressing as soon as you see a black and white thumbnail

  • muinto bom

  • so. . .its a cycle pratily?

  • excepcional----

    a mensagem é perfeita...e leva-nos até ao fim!

    Parabens e obrigado

  • Amazing!

  • terrible.

  • Muito bom

  • WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i have seen so many better short films this is low on the list

  • Ppl say this is beautiful because of the art n ths animation. Not the cruelty of others tormenting a mother & child. This story does make sense you just have 2 b creative enough 2 understand the symbolic or metaphor meanings. Basically i think the story is about a child's struggle 2 keep his mother's being alive, and even after he fails, he makes use of his memories of her by creating an instrument of her 2 symbolize his memory of his mother, and continues to play music 2 keep his memories alive

  • @sabbysayshi1

    xD

    !!!

  • Oh! nice~

  • The tribal theme emphasizes a connection to our ancient past. While focusing on the origin of music and culture, it sparks an emotional memory to remind us of our history.

  • Beautiful

  • Absolutely brilliant!!

  • amazing. simply amazing.

  • Very beautiful indeed.

  • This was an extremely beautiful story.

  • Its remarkable how well this portrays the fact that you are influenced and are helped by your elders even after their passing. Nicely done nfb!

  • *bawls*

  • Fantastic, awesome.... :-) The instrument is played at/in brasilia to capoeira..it´s called the berimbau.

    greetz FrauSichel

  • they have strange posture

  • Meanwhile in Africa....

They seem happy so let's let those black people drown in their tears.

  • everone is saung how beautiful this is its not at all he made a banjo out of his dead moms head so wtf!!!!???

  • Nice and sad story :(

    Good work !

  • thank you, this is a great work

  • GO NFB! love all the videos!

  • Stupid hunters killed her! God, they are some mean people.... good animation though

  • so sad!!! yet beautiful at the same time!

  • Wow this didnt make sense. Must be a failed attempt at making metaphors.

  • Saddam Hussein asked me how long this video will be.

  • @Wuhzman ???

  • @GamEfreakStunter 9 11 !!!

  • QUE MERDA. ANOS 30?

  • It's the circle of life..... and it moves us all....

  • In Bangladesh there is somethin called the aktara = one string = one stringer... the components are similiar w/ a gourd shaped base, two flat bamboo/wood pieces teeping the opening of the gourd, plus a string that lines vetically with the flat pieces. It's mainly used for for folk music.

Thanks for the vid, great animation and very creative!

  • The same word exists also in India, where is referencing to similar gourd-resonated musical bow, instrument of Sidi community of Gujarat state, used by player, while he walking in neighborhoods and singing, or while participate in damal ecstatic dance. There "malunga" is bow related to ancestral spirit Bava Gor, who came to India probably from East Africa. But first people, which used musical bows were Bushmens (San), Hottentots (Khoi) and related people (like Sandawe, Hadzabe and Pygmies).

  • Comment removed

  • We have got also shortened version of semantical meaning (only as "spirit") in words: "gunga" (Brazil), "nhungo" (Mbunda tribe), "humbo" (Muxiluanda people), "hungu" and "ungu" (Ambundu people), "rucumbo", "rucungo", "orucungo", "urucungu" (Bakongo people of Angola, also in Brazil), "ugumbo" and "ugubhu" (Zulu, Transvaal) [de Oliveira 1958, Shaffer 1977, Megenney 1978, Kubik 1979].

  • Others interesting transliterations are: "cambulumbumba" (Lunda-Tchokwe people, Angola); "ombulumbumba", "ombulumba", "ombumbumba" (Ovimbundu people, Angola); "mbulumbumba" and "burumbumba" (San !Kung, Bantu Ngumbi and Handa tribes of Southwestern Angola, also in Cuban Republic) - all comes from "buro" (speak with) + "mbumba" (the spirit of the ancestor).

  • Word "berimbau" is compound of prefix "mbi-" and stem "-rimbau" ["The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language" 2000]. Almost identical is name "bilimbano" (Mandinka people, called also Mandingo, West Africa) in Mande (like Bantu it is also branch of the Niger-Congo language family, but with different noun-class system).

  • Musical bow is at all of Khoi-San origin - first known ethnos of homo sapiens sapiens. Relatively old names "berimbau" (Portugal), "birimbau" (Brazil), "birimbao" (Spain), all come directly from name "mbirimbau" (Kimbundu language, called in Portuguese Quimbundo, spoken by Ambundu people of Angola, South-West Africa) [Renato Mendonça; Ortiz; Rego 1968; Machado 1977; Meggeney 1978; "Collins English Dictionary"; Schneider "Dictionary of African borrowings in Brazilian Portuguese"].

  • The National Film Board of Canada is one of the great gifts given by one country to the rest of the world.

  • @jerrykingmusser thank you sir :D

  • wow nice story..................nice art i jus finished watching it

  • It can be considered African, but the origin is for return of 1.500 B.C., when they had been found also in the Patagônia, New Mexico and Africa. The musical compass is peculiar of the capoeira.

  • thanks

  • Berimbau not is African ! Berimbau is Brazilian !

  • Berimbau is African.. but it was not called Berimbau. Berimbau was first found in Africa 7,000 years ago.

  • can't you read the DESCRIPTION for god's sake????????

"The hungu is an African musical instrument, ancestor of the BRAZILIAN berimbau."

  • Berimbau not is African !

  • nieeee... Twoja stara to berimbau :D

  • czyli że ogólne przesłanie filmiku - twoja stara to berimbau? :]

  • not so good... :(

  • beautiful! I enjoyed every second of it. Deep story... Are those wooden people cause they make weird noises? Liked it

  • your logo is a copy of "lucasart".... where is creativity?

  • The NFB logo was first used in 1969.

    Lucasarts was founded in 1982.

Hence Lucasarts had 13 years to copy the NFB logo. It might be good to actually do some research before reaching such conclusions.

  • im sorry it was easy to do u right ;)

    anyway good job

  • I enjoyed watching this very very much.

  • that was depressing but i think that the art and meaning was really unique

  • GOOD FOR CLIP ART PHOTO
