When Douglas knocked him out, like any true bully, he couldn't handle it. Before the Douglas fight, 37-0. Including the Buster Douglas fight, he lost eight of his last 21 matches. Fantastic fight. 10 rounds between two of the greatest fighters of all time. Tyson just met his match on that day. True, but Douglas deserved this fight. He trained real hard and lost his mother and wife. He trained like a Top Class Fighter and trained intense, while Tyson was going around indulging himself in strip clubs.
This was James "Buster" Douglas at his best and Iron Mike Tyson at his worst. Douglas took complete advantage of that and that was smart. I give him full credit for all the heart he showed in this fight.

@RandomLevitation Early in Tyson's career, Mike displayed great defensive skills, speed and power, but not really the most offensive boxer...More of brawler and changed boxing because his style was unorthodox and fought from a very low center of gravity. This made him fearsome and many lost before the bell rung. I wont say Buster was better than Tyson however, I will say Buster could fight him the same less hookers, drugs and in his 20's and probably still win. watch the Tony tucker fight!

@RandomLevitation Records dont mean that much, beyond longevity in the sport. The truth is Buster had a mountain of talent but it some circles was considered inconsistent and even lazy at times. Tyson was a PHYSICAL specimen that started late boxing and earned a mystique that helped him when many fights. Thats like saying Rocky M was the best of all time because of his record. Buster is not hof, due to body of work, but was a good fighter. Tyson tho, is HOF due body of work..the end!

Watch the damn fight for what it is...one man at his best, one mediocre at best. Douglas through jabs like crazy, moved his head defensively, worked the body a little and got up after one hell of a wallop from Tyson. this fight was no fix or huge fluke.

at this time,apparently,Tyson was on a course of antibiotics to deal with adose of the clap he had caught.If this be true,then I can give credence as to this being why a journeyman (Douglas) was able to take Tyson.He was not a puncher,counter puncher or particularly ring crafty,alongside his conditioning was always remeniscent of past eras.However,I have to applaude the fact that he seized his moment in history.As they say "The sun shines on a dogs arse at least once it it's life"

Fantastic fight. 10 rounds between two of the greatest fighters of all time. Tyson just met his match on that day. I remember watching it with my dad and brother, I was too young to understand how HUGE that was for Tyson to be knocked out, but I remember my dad jumping out of his seat and going nuts.

Douglas was really mentally prepared for this one, had nothing to lose and a lot to win. Plus he had motivation and the WILL to defeat Tyson. He was truly fearlless and full of courage for this one. Too bad for him he couldn't keep the title long.

Buster dedicated this fight to his mother, who passed away shortly before this fight. He fought with tremendous heart, even after getting an uppercut from Tyson and getting back up, and that's why he won. Gotta give the man respect.

That was a sad fight. Tyson would've killed Douglas if he still had his previous trainers and if he took the fight seriously. Mike didn't really train for the fight at all. He would've owned Douglas bad if he actually trained. No one could've beaten Mike at that stage if he trained the way he should have.

True, but Douglas deserved this fight. He trained real hard and lost his mother and wife. He trained like a Top Class Fighter and trained intense, while Tyson was going around indulging himself in strip clubs.
This was James "Buster" Douglas at his best and Iron Mike Tyson at his worst. Douglas took complete advantage of that and that was smart. I give him full credit for all the heart he showed in this fight.

I´ve seen this bout a hundred of time. We have to allow that Buster Douglas was unbelievable at that time. He deserves a BIG respect, that he could beat Mike at his prime. I am know what I talking about, cause I do some boxing too. Just take a look on his left jab, unbelievable!!! His relentless, stamina, power and speed. Almost tha whole fight Mike looked so confused. Mike still will be my favourite boxer and the boxer, however what Buster Douglas did at that night in Tokio was spectaculal!!
