  • I doubt highly my generation could fill John Prine's shoes. He stands alone.

  • Anyone know who he's playing with in this version? Especially the lead guitar?

  • I relate

  • i'm not sure if i get the narkin and parkin and barkin bit...lol

    great tune

  • what a beautiful rendition of this song... for me personally it was easier catching a few fish than saving the relationship. but honest to God, i really tried. some horrible things happen in spite of all the beauty surrounding us but we have to hold on to that beauty od all is lost... stand by and enjoy those peaceful waters but remember, they often run deep.

    thanks for sharing im4out :)

  • @MrBuckwilliam ......thank you for a super comment....

  • good music, transcends time and space, and age. no body gives a fck how old we are in the presence of a tune like this. shut up. and listen.

  • @foofermoe lol..i like your style..

  • amazing post. thank you. john prine thank you.

  • Man, this guy is good, the respect he gets from his band tells the story, watch how his band looks as to when to harmonize, "awesome", give credit to lead guitar and bass player for their respect to the Man.

  • wonderful tune

  • So, so good. I love how he makes the distinction between Lake Elizabeth and Lake Marie. Life isn't about Lake Elizabeth. It's about Lake Marie. There is peace that can be found in life, but it's often fleeting...momentary. All around its banks, the good and the bad mix together. But the waters themselves are peaceful. Prine is otherworldly good....like he's been given a sly secret from God that only he knows....but he's wiling to share with us one song at a time.

  • Oops, forgot to ask if these are two real lakes, where are they located? AND...which album is this on? Who knows it without looking?

  • I am not a huge fan of this version, but at the same time it is so organic. Anyone know, is he still alive, kickin, and performing? And finally, is this song about a true story. I would love to go to Lake Marie and jam this song!

  • @bjugs44 Still alive and performing but not kickin quite as high.

  • John breaks a guitar string in the grand finale.

  • i am gonna play this song for all my buddies who say country music sucks, after hearing this song there is no way they will still not like country

  • i took my little girl, born and raised in draguignan france, for ice cream by lake mary of the twin lakes this summer so she could say she had been to wisconsin, i didnt know this song then

  • I live in twin lakes, and man is this cool.... yeahhhh baby,,

  • @kingdavid373 ....sounds like a great place to live....man...i'm jealous....

  • My introduction to John Prive was the song Illegal Smile as the theme song to the TV show "The Texas Wheelers" - starring Gary Busey of all people. In the 70s I suppose.

  • Awesome. Prine is in touch with the universal, don't worry he'll be there in heaven to listen to. That gravelly voice is perfection. No wonder he is one of Dylan's favorite too.

  • I am 17 years old and John Prine is my favorite songwriter. I started listening to him at a very early age. Back in the 90s, my mom would play his CDs in the car and this was my favorite song. I remember really getting into the story and singing all the words (this was my first time singing). Thank you for this video.

  • @masonfreyguy16 ....hey...you have a very cool mom......well done....and thanks for watching...

  • That entire story is just so amazing. Real and surreal at the same time. But mostly just real and vivid like the part about the girl falling asleep in his arms humming "louie, louie". American kids should have to take a John Prine class to graduate high school.

  • BEST John Prine song ever!!! wonderful performance!!

  • I could listen to John Prine for hours on end and never be bored.

  • They were sizzling!

  • European folk RULES! Go suck dicks, your stupid americans!

  • I cannot help but well up with tears listening to this song... his voice... the words... the practical wise-man delivery of the spoken words... Thank God for music, I wouldn't make it without it... I really wouldn't...

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!!

  • Esse cara é muito bom! Adoro essa música.

  • Aaaaah.

    Jason Wilbur on lead guitar!

  • "give god a guitar, and this is what you would get....."

Said it better than I ever could.

  • how did they know the names of the babies?

  • I am 15 years old and had never heard of John Prine, but one night my parents brought me to a concert of his, and now I love him! All of his songs are just beautiful, and he is an amazing story teller. This song is one of my favorites. I listen to him all the time now, and I am so glad I got to go to that concert. I will never forget it!

  • @dhb333 ... you have awesome parents.....some people say bob dylan writes about the outside world, what he sees. then neil young writes about things that are going on inside.....can't argue about that..........but john prine writes about all our fears, and insecurities. and there's no one better than that....john's songs make's you think , he's writing about you........ show this reply to your parents. bet they agree....but, in the meantime . thank you very much for your comment....

  • @dhb333 .... and ps. hello from scotland....

  • @dhb333 Hey young feller, Be a good kid for your mom and dad. Keep listening to this John Prine stuuf and you'll turn out good. God Bless You!! :) dupree

  • I was turned on to John in 1979, Prime Prine, loved it. I play guitar and for the last 30 years played most of the songs on that album. I'd never seen him perform but 2 years ago I had the chance and I took it. Knowing he was 30 years older I thought he may have lost a step or two....wrong. The man was amazing, he and Jason Wilber, played all of Prime Prine and closed with this song O-I-O-I-O I loved it. This was on of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Don't miss him.

  • @l2string .... i find myself agreeing with everything you said....

  • I was lucky to have seen John in concert several years ago. Over two hours of magic....no video screens, dancers, or fireworks, just him and his guitar. Best concert ever. This is music at it's best.

  • @DonaldHop ...aye, i've seen john every time he comes to scotland....which is not often enough....

  • SWEET TUNE !

  • John Prine never sold out and I dont really think he ever cared if anyone liked his songs, and what we got was pure brilliance

  • If I had to pick a favorite JP song this would be one of the contenders and this version is just incredible! What performance is this? It stirs me up, I can barely sit still!

  • @pointofgrille .. thanks for comment , my friend...

  • If you can't listen to John Prine in heaven, I aint goin.

  • @dedflrs me, neither.....

  • @dedflrs There are only two kinds of people in the world..............those who love John Prine and those who don't matter................standing by peaceful waters.........

  • @dedflrs Don't worry. Angels like him can't stay here for very long before their work is done and they're called home.

  • @dedflrs He'll be there.

  • @dedflrs Oh yeah, the Italian sausages will be there too. All the best.

Mike Pantall and the Hells angels. I knew it would happen one day!

  • @mmiaxx2002 now, that would be something, to see dem hairy bikers crying.. lol

  • hes speaking or menominee land , i love wisconsin and john prine

  • I saw him when i was 9 years old, and it was the best concert ive ever been too. and i want to see him again

  • A friend of mine said, Kinda violent for Prine. I said, It is a song of an outraged heart. "Standin by peaceful waters..." Anymore outrage is practiced and political, not a private hurtful sorrow.

  • I was at the Oct 22nd L-ville show too.Truly one of the best things I've seen/heard in my 44 years.

  • I first saw John Prine in 1974 in a very small theater in Louisville KY. I last saw him two weeks ago at a much larger theater in Louisville. There have been a couple of dozen shows in between. I guess you could say I'm a huge fan. I know this is an overused cliche, but he gets better with age.

  • @jcart12357 yes ,, i agree .. john gets better with every listen....cheers

  • Damo im4out thanks as always for this upload, I find my self drawn to it, at least once or twice a week! Oh Hell Yeah I Love John Prine!

  • Listened to this song for 1st time on my 40th birthday and I had a few tears for those gone before, or was that for those 40 years, a song with so many themes, depends on the day you listen to it.

  • @4aceshigh1957 yoour buddy sounds cool..

  • my buddy Stan Walsh is very similar to John.

  • you know what blood looks like in a black and white video? shadows..... SHADOWS!

    Hello from Italy.

  • @borderaffair ..hello in there ..italy...

  • Vintage Prine. I could listen to this all day long.

  • @abbys5 ...yes indeed.. for over thirty five years.i keep comin' to johns music....i'm glad you like..

  • He played at the Regina folk fest this year, and I almost passed out. Some guy had to prop me up against the fence so I wouldn't fall over. Some may say it was from drinking all day, and a poor vegan diet, but I like to think otherwise.

  • @EstrangedOldWoman ..ha ha ha perhaps a mixture of the three.....john's been here in scotland about three times....i'm first in line each time.....that's about only time i don't fall down ha ha ha .

  • Dylan's favorite Prine song.

  • @nbdy89 yeah it sounds like its around Dylan's home town.. up nort. yes yes. cool comment, thanks for sharin the good info!

  • ahhh baby such an awesome song writer ... they dont make em like this anymore.

  • i saw him in concert a while back, this was one of the best

  • @9beatles yes indeed....

  • The bass player is great but he looks like Count Floyd from SCTV!

  • This is about the 10th time I've listened to this song since last night. The sheer pleasure you can see in John Prine's face says it all about this performance. The story is wonderfully told, and the guitar interplay -- especially the last 2 minutes -- is just a joy to behold.

  • Comment removed

  • Just inspiring. Who is Prine's lead guitar player? I saw him in the Philly Folk Fest videos too. Man can play the guitar.

  • @deckbose his name is jason wilbur

  • Really good version of the song.

  • @suicidaljuggalette i'm glad you like......cheers

  • Totally a song about the good old Twin lakes.

  • @bschuerman hey , thanks for checkin' out.....

  • From the moment I first heard this song, it was an instant favorite. This is an awesome live performance. We gotta go now!

  • I'm so sorry, I just can't get enough of this righteous tune from the one and only John By God Prine! What more can he do to justify being named An American National Treasure! And while you're at it throw in Prine's old buddy Steve Goodman, let them be appointed as National Treasures together! Oh yeah, his two piece band ain't too BAD either!

  • @9erfandex ... i have to agree with everything you say , my friend....oh yeah..

  • Shhhadows!!

  • @ThePrescottman ...yes. shadows and peaceful waters......nice.

  • That guitar solo is epic.

  • Awesome Video!! And may I add it's about those "Sizzling" Italian Sausages!! lol

  • @2ridesafe ....... ahhhh baby.......peaceful waters......many years later.......the wind was blowin'..... there was four italian sausages......and they were sizzzzziling........we gotta go now.........

  • ahhh baby, we gotta go now

  • It is not the sausage. It is the sizzle. The song does have sizzle.

  • @RAGLINGRADH yes indeed it does...

  • @RAGLINGRADH lol

  • great song and all but i think the Italian sausage part was added in just to fill a blank i mean seriously what do sausages have to do with anything.

  • @Poley4000 and whats a nark?

  • @Poley4000 not just sausages, my freind, but italian sausages.....oh yeah........lol

  • @Poley4000

Mundane human drama in comparison to the constant beauty of natures gifts as a backdrop...

  • Jason Wilber on guitar--a great talent. David Jacques on bass.

  • Jason Wilber on guitar. David Jacques on bass.

  • Love it, beautiful song, I especially love the jam at the end, looks like Johhny's having a good time!

  • hes the shit

  • @slovakmath sure is....

  • Love Prine. Love my fellow "Prine-Cones" (Prine fans....outdoor fans......)

But this is a DEAD version of this song. Just being honest. It is the greatest

of the great songs....but there are definitely better versions.....

    "And MAN, they were SSSSssssssizzzzzzzzlin'!"

  • @JohnMan59 ....haaaaaaa baby ..your comment is sssssssssizzzzziling... tnanks

  • Did not want to offend anyone...but this song is better loud and long....

s'all I'm sayin' John Prine rules. He really does. AND, beer will change

the world! (I don't know how...but it WILL!)

  • @JohnMan59 zappa sang about titties and beer.....so you could be right ha ha ha ....

  • yes we seen it........but good that your paying attention....ha ha ha..... go to the top of the class.....

  • wow you're clever ha ha ha

  • I'm 18 and huge Dylan fan, so my mom suggested I check out John Prine.

He's often very much overlooked, but wow is he good!

  • i think your mother is a very wise woman, should listen her advise more........btw if you like dylan you should check out ilgenoano1 channel......cheers

  • @namedULaika If you like Dylan and Prine you need to check out Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. They both have that interesting view of life, interesting and sad, that Prine and Dylan impart in their music

  • beautiful. simply beautiful.
