@honorableron I dont think Elvis ever hated them personally. I mean he agreed to meet them, and supposedly he got along very well with them the night he met them. What it was....he was so used to being the top dog for 8 years....that when they came to the States it scared him. I think he might have been envious of the fact they stole the top spot from him. But I think he still liked them as people and respected a lot of their music....hence why he covered them.

The original Beatle's track is in C and Elvis dropped it all the way to G, the song loses dynamics and emotional depth. Add to that the fact that the 'downers' he took compromised his breathing to the level where it's impossible for him to sing with his famous baritone vibrato. Elvis could have sang this song better than anyone on the planet if he'd done it in the original key and three years earlier but not there on that night in '73.

@tevoyaextranar Very good point. This version is great. What is more important though is not the performer but the composer. That is where Elvis was out of his depth. He never professed to be a composer, but being a great composer in music is the criteria for the test of time. The Beatles win hands down.
