I enjoy the way Mike attacks the melody without pretentious embellishment, smart-arse showing off or big-noting. He plays the way I aspire to play. His style is the mandolin benchmark for my money!
Been looking for this tune for some time! Cool! And MrMandolover is certified ignorant. He doesn't even know who he was ridiculing. Monroe is on youtube doing this too. Thanks, Mike from a guitar picker who's picked up the mando. Love it.
MY opinion is that it's very hard to find this tune anywhere. My compliments to the bug for puttin' it out there. Been trying to learn it for while and this puts it in perspective.
I don't know MrMandolover, but last I heard, opinions are allowed. Just because YOU may think he's ignorant, that too is just an opinion. Some folks like the purity of defined notes, others like the more raw approach. I always figure if somebody doesn't like what I like, it doesn't make them ignorant. If that were the case, there would certainly be millions of idiots out there. :^)
Fight nice folks. Being ignorant is not a crime, It does not imply stupidity or idiocy. To me, it implies lack of knowledge. I plead ignorance on a great many subjects. Sure, we all have different tastes. That's what makes the world go 'round. My comment to Mandolover was that he didn't understand what I was attempting to do and instead made reckless and biting comments based upon his personal perspective/tastes on the subject. Having a difference of opinion is one thing. Being rude is another.
Alright all you "MrMandolover"s, damn us all as the bluegrass vanguard demands the music start to function like classical music. I suggest you trade your Thile/Steffey/Hull playlists for Monroe/Wakefield/Compton. Some Rachel/McCoy/Hawkins too..... know where you come from, hear me?
Yes, you are uneducated. I suggest you talk to Thile/Steffey/Hull about the style you think so little of...beyond that, what is your point? Do you just find me to be an easy target?
MrManLover, I can forgive your ignorance, and because this was probably your first day on the internets, I will look the other way on your stupidity. That said, you should prepare for the karmic kick in the balls you so richly deserve.
I see what you mean, MrMandolover. Although listening to Thile makes me feel like in a dentist's office, it's pretty obvious that he's a great player.
But man, what's the point of only listening to perfect stuff?
Keith Moon, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, The Ramones, The Shaggs! Do you think you can disprove all these people and their contributions just because they're a little sloppy?

Never in musical history has a guy gotten so far by hitting half the notes he goes for! Wanna see a true master listen to Thile or Adam Steffy, or Sierra Hull!. Good grief the king has no clothes on!!!!
Yes indeed, Thile/Steffey/Hull are modern masters. They also play an entirely different style. The old bluegrass mandolin style is more in line with impressionism. It attempts to suggest ideas rather than spell them out in meticulous detail. I played every not that I "went for". Considering you apparently "heard" more notes than I played is a testament to the style's effectiveness. But then I suppose you were too busy w/your criticism to notice. Educate yourself. No kings here, friend.
that's awesome!!! i play mandolin too but i'm not as good as you!!! i have a tough time with it....got any secrets?? i have a POS fender F-style mando, i'd like to get a better one soon!

I must say I actually enjoyed reading Mr. Compton's comments in response to Mandolover.
Besides being my favourite mando player alive, he's a true gentleman.
Keep it up, Bug!

Gosh, I guess I am uneducated. So the point is to intentionally sound like one is slopping through a song missing half the notes? Interesting!
