@GoldDougie The first laws restricting the carrying of firearms only applied to blacks actually. Guns were eventually made useful in the struggle for civil rights though. See Malcolm X's "ballot or the bullet" or the black panther patrol's where they followed cops in CA around with guns.

@ArchNME And if it also applied to whites, there would have been no struggle in that area. Segregation is a stain on our past just like the holocaust for germany but on a lesser scale. It can't be ignored but we can look past it to present day and in present day Germany the gun control is effective. The internment camps were better in terms of physical condition but similar emotionally. Victims were removed from families and homes and lives they built destroyed, only because of their ethnicity.
@GoldDougie Germany is a vastly different county in the United States. It has far less crime across the board in all categories not just gun violence. You can't simply say gun control is effective, what leads you to believe the murder rate would be any higher if guns there were more available? Switzerland is much more demographically, economically and culturally similar to Germany than the united states and they have universal gun ownership and low crime.
@ArchNME Switzerland has 5 times the murder rate of Germany. 13.169/1million compared to 2.4/1million. U.S. isn't as bad because of police but there are alot of countries that own too many guns for their own good such as serbia, yemen, and saudi Arabia. And if US allows it's people to own guns than it empowers people that may feel the world is against them and use the guns where as a knife would not be effective except for maybe against individuals.
@GoldDougie That's statistic is incorrect. Where are you getting that? This EU report clearly shows that in fact that between 2006-2008 Switzerlands homocide rate was .73 per 100,000 while Germanys was .84.
@GoldDougie I'm not trying to white wash US history here but we have had a relatively free and Democratic state much longer than Germany. Despite our heinous acts of oppressing minorities and native genocides and such. We have always had an open society and democratic government, the range of people able to participate in which has increased since our founding. We seem to be doing well on that front.

@GoldDougie On crime, the number one easiest thing you could do to dramatically reduce the murder rate in the US is end drug prohibition. Close to half of all killings in the US are classified as drug related and probably more are in reality. Most inner city youths wouldn't even own a gun if it weren't there involvement in the drug game. It's a multi-billion dollar industry that the legal system can't regulate at all cus it's illegal, thus it's governed by violence.
@GoldDougie Also, I think better availability of birth control. As in the gov should supply in free to everyone who wants it from puberty on up. That would do a lot to reduce crime down the road. @GoldDougie The main cause of crime is poverty. At the end of the day most people break the law because they don't see a better or easier legal opportunity to make money. It's lack of education, social welfare, and the massive money to be made due to continued drug prohibition that are the root causes of violent crime in the United States. You don't see much gun violence in middle and upper class neighborhoods though they have just as much access to guns.
@ArchNME So then how can it be compared? Americans have to look at other similar countries that implement gun control laws and understand the violence. Today, many Americans can just decide that they had enough of someone or enough of the world and just go shoot them or go on a shooting spree. Someone can do this in a country with gun laws? sure, but guns are less prevalent and odds are that person will not have a gun.

Guns are an invitation to violence...That's how I see them. I've read in a book on gun safety that pepper spray actually make better self-defense (no cross-fire, no accidental injuries of others involved, etc)

I've done a thorough, unbiased research for a college project through books and documentaries, but I've colncluded that guns do more harm than protection - primarily to children. Assault weapons in the home are 43 times more likely to kill someone of family or friend relations than an intruder. Thats why I feel gun laws should be stricter, like requiring trigger locks since children can get a hold of firearms in the home.

No one is allowed to possess a gun unless they are part of the Schützenverein, or a firearms club. I felt safe at nights out with my buddies. Neighbors took care of each other. I took all this for granted until I saw how concerned my parents were whenever I was out at night here in the states. I love America and Germany, and I wish I could feel as safe here as I did there...

I remember when I bought my first gun in Texas. I bought it at an Academy and I was able to purchase a handgun and bullets under 5 min and just walk out of the store. No questions asked no psych eval no proof that I know how to aim the thing.

It can't be ignored but we can look past it to present day and in present day Germany the gun control is effective. The internment camps were better in terms of physical condition but similar emotionally. Victims were removed from families and homes and lives they built destroyed, only because of their ethnicity.

U.S. isn't as bad because of police but there are alot of countries that own too many guns for their own good such as serbia, yemen, and saudi Arabia. Close to half of all killings in the US are classified as drug related and probably more are in reality. Most inner city youths wouldn't even own a gun if it weren't there involvement in the drug game. I've done a thorough, unbiased research for a college project through books and documentaries, but I've colncluded that guns do more harm than protection - primarily to children. Assault weapons in the home are 43 times more likely to kill someone of family or friend relations than an intruder. Thats why I feel gun laws should be stricter, like requiring trigger locks since children can get a hold of firearms in the home.

No one is allowed to possess a gun unless they are part of the Schützenverein, or a firearms club. I felt safe at nights out with my buddies. Neighbors took care of each other. I took all this for granted until I saw how concerned my parents were whenever I was out at night here in the states. I love America and Germany, and I wish I could feel as safe here as I did there...

@atomic3939 I've no issue with protection friend. But sometimes on the way to preparation an over-zealousness becomes a SELF FULFILLING PROPHESY OF DOOM. I myself keep protection on hand but believe me the first weapon I will attempt if danger comes to me is a smile. You might be surprised how effective it can be over a shotgun. Also, you don't need tons of weapons for a perimeter defense, what you do need lots of firepower for is a PRIMARY OFFENSIVE ACTION. Which makes these people suspect.

I remember when I bought my first gun in Texas. I bought it at an Academy and I was able to purchase a handgun and bullets under 5 min and just walk out of the store. No questions asked no psych eval no proof that I know how to aim the thing.

It is some disenfranchised angry young man with a gang initiation ritual coming up and a shitty stolen 22. pistol in the middle of some inner city slum. Fully automatic weapons are reasonably hard to get and are very expensive. They are also impossible to get if you have a criminal record. They are the domain of collectors

If you notice in the video in Camden, NJ they show they have taken military grade weapons off the streets. And who is to say a person who can qualify for an automatic/military weapon won't sell it to someone with ill intent. I understand the need for having a gun in the home but if you look at the statistics guns harm the innocent much more than they benefit.
