The rabbi plainly told us that the early Hebrews were henotheistic. They believed that other nations had their own gods while Yahweh was the god of the Hebrews.
That has to be the stupidiest reading of deu 32 I have ever heard. How can anyone read: "There is no god besides me." that is in v. 39 to mean that there are other gods? Or the claim in v. 6 that God created you to mean there are others?
Deu 32: 6 Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?
Whether "there is no god besides me" means "I am the only god there is" or "No other gods compare to me" can't be determined without a knowledge of the original Hebrew text. Even if it DOES mean the former, it could have been adjusted later, when the Hebrews embraced monotheism. Even if you have reason to disagree with Price, I don't see how you can call his learned, well-reasoned interpretation "stupid."
