  • This candy isn't the best tasting, but I'm addicted to it

  • i hate thiscandy and i dont no y im eating it when i see tis comercial

  • I hated licorice when I was a kid. I used to chew the candy coating off G&P and spit out the licorice cores.

  • i love this!

  • Wtf am i watching?

  • Anyone else see an issue with candy that has enough combustible energy to run a train?!?!

  • i remember this shitty candy when i was a kid, Good & Fruity was way better tasting

  • I remember this so well after 45 years when I saw this as a kid.

  • I love Good and Plenty! Was always my favorite candy as a kid. Black licorice rules!

  • I recognize the tune of that old Casey Jones song in there! That's great.

  • this isnt 50's its late 60's

  • CRREEEEPPYYYY

  • my dad sings this!!

  • Don't know any other candy that's so much like hell.

That was the commercial that taught me the bitter lesson as a small child not to believe what they say in advertising!

  • Classic... was this the origin of Charlie Brown and Lucy? Hmmmm... similarities,

  • @UnitedCorpOfAmerica

    No, it postdates them.

  • awwww

  • omg.. im 14 n my grandpop used to sing this every time his dog charlie came in the room... i had no idea it was a real song lmfao

  • I may be the only one on here that likes Good And Plenty still. I've always loved licorice.

  • This came on while watching astro boy and felix the cat!

  • Yep- remember that little steam engine that was on a roller coaster on Saturday morning TV- remember my Oma giving me Good & Plenty because SHE liked them. Maybe that's why I love model trains and Sambuca today :-)

  • @trainsntile I know what you mean, My Grandpa used to buy Circus Peanuts in the Brach's bags when I was little, They are a orange peanut shaped marshmallow candy, They tasted awful in my opinion, but in order to not hurt his feelings, I would say Thank You and eat them anyway.

  • Classic blue & white TV.

  • God, Licorice

  • Well, there is a blue background in this, I thought most public broadcasts in the 1950s were black and white.

  • @SamuraiClinton good catch - I remember this one from the 1960's

  • @SamuraiClinton Actually, I would guess that most public broadcasts in the 1960's were black and white. I remember this commercial on Saturday morning cartoons when I was kid and I was born in 1961. I remember a few color TV's around here in the late '60s but we didn't get one till the early 70's. Actually, I don't think this commercial is from the 50's, it may have been, but it was still around in the mid to late 60's.

  • "Transportation Blues" by Charlie Troutt's Melody Artists is the melody to "Choo-Choo Charlie" Jingle...

  • The jingle is based on a song from the '20s, and I can't think of it right this second... Same melody.

  • i hate good and plenty, IT IS LICORICE LIKE MIKES, THEY ARE WANNABY LIKE MIKES, no offence

  • ai wanna go back to these days...

  • This ad ran well into the 1960s. I wasn't born till 1963 and I remember seeing it on TV during cartoon shows in 1967-68 time frame. The candy was horrible, it was licorice flavored and (I realize now) more something that adults would like.

  • @squeapler Blech. I agree. I HATE Good n' Plenty.

  • Wow.

    I remember this.

    Those were the days.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I could be completely wrong, but at least one of voices sounded like one of the Peanuts character voices from years back.

  • Charlie seems kind of young to be a railroad engineer.

  • why don't they feel sick from such a wobbly ride?

  • commercials need 2 b more like this

  • I REMEMBER CHOO CHARLIE..ATE GOOD &PLENTY ALL THE TIME COST 10CENT A BOX BACK IN THE DAY 60S

  • MY FAVORITE COMMERCIAL! STILL LOVE IT! WISH THEY WOULD MAKE COMMERCIALS LIKE THESE INSTEAD OF DEPPRESSING ONES.

  • "Once upon a time there was an engineer"

  • Great old commercial & I love Good & Plenty!

  • so catchy. i played it back like 10 times

  • Charlie says, "WINNING!!!"

  • The first time I ever saw this was during 1998 on a Sunday morning (like 3am) on TV Land. I was in 5h grade at the time, and I wasn't used to being up that late (I think I just woke up for like 30 seconds-enough time to see this). I thought I imagined this for the longest time.

  • I remember this commercial but it had to have been the 1960s.

  • I loved this commercial and remember at least one other with the same characters. I used to wonder as a child why it made me think of Charlie Brown; only after finally seeing it again do I now see that was intentional, as Schulz was hot stuff in that period and this character style follows it *very* closely. ;

There was a cool color Good N Fruity commercial too with a cartoon rock group.

  • @CaptainGoofysstash you right on! do u remember the same format almost exaxtly was used to sell Beechnut fruit striped gum

  • A great commercial for the worst candy ever - like eating a candy-coated dog turd.

  • @devtrev --hey! I like them!

  • @kucheneka They taste like medicine to me. Good 'n Fruity are okay though.

  • @devtrev "Worst candy ever?" It's licorice, pure & simple, with a hard candy shell.

I'm not sure it would qualify as the "worst candy ever." I think maybe those edible wax candies (like the wax lips available around Halloween time), or those "Circus Peanuts," even candy corn, might qualify as worse than licorice.

Actually, many people have fond memories of not only Good 'N Plenty, but shoestring licorice, the latter one of the classic "penny candy" items.

  • @gymnastix I stand by my statement - worst candy ever, with the possible exception of that weird "Grandma candy" - remember that candy that all Grandma's had in a bowl in their living room? What the hell was that stuff?

  • @devtrev I agree. My grandmother always had a bowl of black licoirce candy..Horrible!!!!

  • @devtrev And there is also cherry licorice, much more tasty than standard black.

There are a few, licorice-flavored alcoholic beverages--Jagermeister and Anisette, the latter even a popular flavor of cookie.

I recall "Good 'N Fruity" candy when I was a kid--multi-colored candies, really jelly beans in the shape of Good 'N Plenty. They were much tastier than Good 'N Plenty.

  • @devtrev wrong, they are WONDERFULL! and, if you don't like them, why are you watching this commercial?

  • @BreyersaRS I love the commercial - it takes me back to my childhood. I still think they're horrible though. Good 'n Plenty is the red-headed stepchild of candy.

  • @BreyersaRS And if you don't like the taste, why did they buy them? I liked them and Good & Fruity as well but I cannot find them today!

  • this is great. im not sure how i remember it, i was born in 1971, but i rescued a dog named charley( i did not name him that) and i have been calling him choo choo charley for the last couple of days, then i remembered the charley says love them good and plenty. and it dawned on me its a commerical lmao!

  • Remember this well, cute but isn't it a bit sexist? And Charlie is kind of a smartass.

  • Cool vid.......my grandma remembers it's from when she was a little girl and love when I play it for her........realllllllly gotta teach her to use the Internet.........

  • @werewoflluva Your grandma...ah yes, a big commercial back in the 1890s...no, this first came out in the late 50s, then was slightly retooled and rerun in the 60s and 70s.

  • CHARLIE SAYSSSS!

  • Awesome post!!!!!

  • Good and Plenty always gave me the "scoots".

  • OW Charlie

  • I hate Good n Plenty but I love this commercial! lol

  • That's my cousin Carole (sh'e older than I) saying "Charlie Says!" in this commercial. She was also the little girl in the Little Red Spinning Wheel commercial, but I alas, can no longer find that one on You Tube!

  • @MissezPremise i loved Choo Choo Charlie when i was a kid..

  • I love my good and plenty enough to look up an old commercial for it on youtube. May they never be canceled.

  • LOVE IT

  • LOVEIT I PUT IN 1000000000000 CHARACTERS REMAINING LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL:):):):):::::::))))))))))))))))))))::::::::::::::)))))))))))))))

  • Always loved that commercial! That was a time when "it rings a bell" expression started to be part of the '60's generation.

  • I used to love this commercial, and it's still my favorite candy :-D

  • I remember that commercial! And that's my favourite candy....Yum Yum.....Black Licorice is so good and good for you!

  • CHARLIE SAYS....

  • @colbyTHEalmighty love my good n plenty..

  • My dad used to have a VHS tape that had old '50s commercials and stuff on it, including this, and I always remembered it. I was just now randomly singing it for my niece so I decided to look it up.

  • I Loooooooved this commercial when I was little - thank you so much for posting it!!!

A side note, my Dad and I are still the only ones on our family that LOVE black licorice!

  • One of the most memorable jingles ever...its 60 years old now and we still remember it.

  • we got Nixon instead of who? Charlie McCarty? Joe McCarthy?

I remember this ad too, and I love those little pink and black pills!

  • Oh, man, I remember this commercial so well. However, I don't like G&P, not being a fan of licorice.

  • Charlie says... too damn much... I mean, does anyone REALLY care what the hell Charlie says?

It is a good commercial, though.

  • So cute, so wonderful!

  • anybody else remember this commercial?

I saw some at the check out line at kroger and it brought back memories of this commercial which i still know the words to : )

  • @jcjudge I vividly remember this commercial, but it must have been the early 60's. The other commercial I really remember is the one for Maypo cereal.

  • Good N' Plenty > Good N' Fruity

  • I remember a similar commercial in 1968...Choo-Choo Charlie for President, so kids will have a friend in government. When he wins, we'll all have lots of fun, and there'll be Good and Plenty candy for everyone!"

  • @ericinwisconsin Instead we got Nixon.

  • @jln55

Yeah, but I still got the Good and Plenty! :)

  • Pretty sure this spot ran well into the 60s.

  • "He used Good 'N' Plenty candy to make his train run." Better to use that and get tooth decay than to get black lung disease from using coal.

  • I like Good N Fruity better.

  • Nastiest candy in existence imo.

  • @ChickenRamen LOL...and my all time favorite. 50 something years old and I love them as much now as I did when I was a kid. Just wish they'd bring back the ORIGINAL Good'n'fruity

  • WOW! Love my good and plenty!

  • the jingle came from the tragic railroad song "Casey Jones" (that song is why we have 'time zones' today) he was trying to beat the clock and didnt know what time it was

  • i remember that so well

  • @drunkensnowgirl me too

  • WGN. 1992. Cheers. You know what I'm talkin about.

  • Haven't heard this commercial in over 40 years...and remember it like it was yesterday. Funny thing, to this day it's STILL my favorite candy on earth!!

  • Classic stuff.

  • If this commercial originally came out in the 50s, it ran a long, long time, because I remember it from when I was a kid, which was the late 60s and early 70s. I also remember the dumb arguments about whether the pink ones were better than the white ones when actually they were exactly the same.

  • @RRaquello I was a kid in the late 60's, early 70's too, and I remember it as well. That and the Fritos Bandito song.

  • @RRaquello Lots of those old ads ran for many years. They didn't take them out of circulation too quickly. That Red Rose tea ad with the chimps dancing to swing music was shown from the early '60s until about 1970, for example. And don't forget the Tootsie Pop ad with the kid asking the zoo animals how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll in the middle. That's from about 1970 and they're still showing it today.

  • For those who didn't notice: the melody is from the old American folk song "Casey Jones", a song about a train wreck. Probably because they had a little kid all hopped up on sugar driving the train. My God! Where were the child labor laws? Oh, the humanity! (apologies to Clem McCarthy)

  • @elc1960 i uploaded a live radio broadcast of the A-Bones singing this, it's actually pretty good

  • I remember everyone singing this Good And Plenty jingle on the school bus at around six years old, but the words had been changed and it was in this cold war verse: Once upon a time there was a Cuban queer, Fidel Castro was his name we hear, He has his country and he sure had fun With his bullets and his machine guns, To make his country run. Fidel says, "Love that Mr. Kruvschev" Fidel says, "Love that Mr. K. Fidel says, "Love that Mr. Kruvschev, Cuz he's gonna drop The Bomb On the U.S.A."
  • @ekeats LOL thats great

  • @ekeats XD lol

  • i uploaded a live radio show recording of The A-Bones (Rock n Roll Band) playing this song, nice to hear where it came from

  • haha! my dad was laughing t this cuz he remembers it. he started singing along to it! i did too cuz my friend preformed the commercial in our 4th grade concert.

  • Whoever made this commercial was smokin somethin!

  • @LongDongSilver78 haha your right!

  • @Emily7up what bring you here btw? i was just wondering what i'd find after having the biggest craving for these. never cared for these growing up, but love licorice now. i wonder how pure these are..because if you want real licorice, candy shop's where it's at where there's real licorice.

  • I just checked on there website ,this commercial came out in 1950 .

  • I love Good N Plenty

  • Charlie says "I lovebmy schphinkter"

  • So since most older Elderly people are from around this Era and later. Are they still racist like they were back in the day?

  • OMG I remebred my dad use to walk around the liivng room with me and push me liek a cho ochoo train after dinner doing this.

  • Love that melody, it's just wonerful.

  • Charlie pays no regard to his carbon footprint.

  • y is the 60s 70s 80s and 50s so cool and well you know i love all of thos years

  • What happens when he runs out of candy? o.O

  • Good and Plenty's were recently deemed to give off a smell that women preferred over the most expensive colognes. So chomp on a few G&P's for me wolves. I'm out of the game.

  • Probably the first commercial I remember; it ran well into the 1960's

  • Classic! Thanks!!!

  • I saw this at my school play so I looked it up. This is such an addicting song to listen to.

  • Give him a break. He's just a kid.

  • I'm 20 so of course I didn't grow up on this but I still find it a fun and catchy commercial :p

  • My favorite commercial as a kid.

  • @nellgwen48 Choo-choo Chrlie! A classic if ever there was one!

  • Did anyone else do this at the matineemovies when you were little??

Buy a box of good & plenty and when you done you blow in the end of the box to make annoying whistling sounds. Those were good times...

  • HOw do I put a you tube video on facebook?

  • Click share under the rating. Then click Facebook.

  • @chadmas99 ok thanks

  • I first saw this on tv land back in the late 90s, when I was in 5th grade. I saw it at 3am on a Sunday. Needless to say it stuck in my mind but I isn't know what it said, what it advertised or anything. Don't see this for the first time at 3am!

And I don't understand the girl or the dog. Why are they there?

  • That's just like a Basset Hound....hanging out and willing to do what you are doing..even if it's a roller coaster...ha-ha...

  • You are right about TV Land, all they show is a bunch of crap now! I like Good and Plenty. but you can hardly ever find it around here without it being old and hard so you can hardly chew it!

  • They have a Railroad Engineer in charge of the IPCC, you know the "experts" on the Global Warming charade

Some are calling him Choo Choo Charlie

  • It's strange that a railroad would hire someone so young as an engineer.

  • That explains the beginning of "Unbreakable" alright.

  • @ChristianTarsney it was the 50's lol

  • @ChristianTarsney - You don't understand, this is a cartoon. It is not real. It's really just an animated drawing. Obviously, no railroad would or could hire a child to be an engineer, nor any other job for that matter. Child labor laws forbid practices, such as that. Hope this information helps.

  • @hernje Are you serious?

  • Please, oh PLEASE tell me this dry humor???

  • @ChristianTarsney charlie hires the railroad to run in his adverts

  • @ChristianTarsney Better a kid then Casey Jones...

  • @ahrules at least casey jones'll get you there fast

  • I was talking about remembering this commercial when I was a little girl. Wow. I only thought about it cause my co-worker/friend was eating them.

  • De finom lehet *-*Magyarországon nem lehet kapni :(

  • @adamkaboy - Most of us don't understand Hungarian. Would you please translate into English if possible? All I could understand was "Magyar" - my family actually had friends whose family name was Magyar, and that's how I found out that it meant "Hungarian."

  • Classic Commercial!

  • Dear Cartoon Variety, I agree with you 100%! TV Land is really B-! With the exception of "Mash"..there is nothing to watch except for

    Norman Lear,MTM and now..God help us.."Home Improvement"Crappyola!

  • @143AC TV Land shows newer shows than what is used to. Thank good ness it still airs All in the Family. TV Land is more or less what Nick at Night used to be.

  • @143AC .....And they ruin the closing credits, which are VITAL to the show's continuity.

    Happy New Year.

  • @143AC - I don't know if you have this network around your place - it's called Antenna TV. It usually airs as a digital subchannel of a regular broadcast TV station, and is often available on cable as well. They are like TV Land used to be, but even better. I live in the Harrisburg, PA TV market, and it's aired on channel 43.2 (subchannel of WPMT, Fox43) over the air and on Comcast 247. Philly has it on 17.3 (subchannel of WPHL - MyPHL17) and on Comcast 252, as well as Verizon FiOS 463.

  • my favorite candy.. but they could of marketed it better

  • I remember this ad from the 60s. It was my favourite too as a kid. Thanks for posting!

  • Loved the commerical but hated G&P's.

  • im having good and plenty now lol

  • I LOVED that commercial when I was a little kid.

But I don't think I ever bought the candy.

  • The original song is Casey Jones.

  • This a classic! I was born in the nineties and I love this commercial!

  • "Charlie says, love the commercial good and plenty" I just saw it and I already like it.

  • i remember is commerical man that wasd years ago.

  • they had that jingle in the 70's too i remember it.

  • Does anyone remember a Good and Plenty ad from the early'70s which had a big G+P box w/ the big G+P candies walking out of the box waving around musical insturments and singing- also an Chicklets ad w/a man dressed in a large catterpillar suit handing out Chicklets to children? If these ads are out there please post-thanks!

  • So Choo Choo Charlie uses Good and Plenty candy to make his train run. At least he doesn't have to depend on foreign oil to run it.

  • @nanlisa Haha good one! If only real trains ran on Good & Plenty.

  • Cool, I love the illustrations.

  • remember some of these commercials did run for over a decade-but its always 15 minutes to

    good n plentyville

  • I definitely remember this commercial. This was from the 60's. I used to eat Good and Plenty as a kid.

  • good and fruity was more like Mike and Ikes but the outside candy was crunchy.

good and plenty was licorice ushy. never brought this candy but someone always gave me a box. Thanks for the memories

  • bring me back, I like it.

  • Wow. I remember this so well. It brings me back to being a kid again.

  • I remember this so well. I would get a box and sing the song. It was catchy.
