@Cjones9692 i use dirt dug up from the garden - as long as it hasnt had pesticide sprays etc, any old dirt is fine. new potting mix and dirt from unknown sources is probably not the best idea. and dont worry about fertiliser etc, grasses like old and depleted soils just fine.
@TheDailyFist The branches i used were eucalyptus branches, and possibly some of the smaller ones are melaleuca- both australian native branches. I would be very careful about putting random branches in your aviary, as they could be toxic - and birds LOVE to chew wood!
I dont wash any tree branches etc because i dont want to wash away any bugs they may like to eat, but i inspect everything first, and if it has bird poo etc on it, i wont use it. I also worm my birds twice a year too.
@ArmadilloBand Thankyou. I have just moved house and had to leave the aviary, so my birds are in smaller cages for another few weeks until my new aviary arrives... which i am very excited about setting up and decorating!
I made it myself. I have made several different swings, toys and structures... its pretty easy - i just collect native seed pods, and other materials, and drill holes in them and string them up with wire and add clasps.
The Budgies really love them. In some i have drilled special holes that i fill up with seeds for them to forage for.
yeah. i used to have 2 cockatiels, one get let out of his cage by a cat, and then i got the budgies. then my other cockatiel died, and so now i have 2 budgies.
oh yeah, i do. i like lots of animals! But i will only be aloud to get a dog if we move house. then i think i'll be able to get one, i really want to move house so i can!
when i move i would like to get a few aviaries (im lucky there was one existing where i live) and do wild and pet bird rescue care. i used to do it when i was younger, but i have learnt a lot since then and soon the time will come when i can use my knowledge and skills to help other birds.
yeah. i would like a green and yellow one. but i just got mice. have you got any other anmals? i have 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs ans 2 mice, and then my 2 budgies.
I have five budgies, 2 cockatiels and one dog - a miniture kelpie named bing, who is 12 years old.
i could easily get more birds, but i remind myself that each bird i get means less time with each one i have. I used to live with a girl who had rats, i thought they were pretty cool. i would like to get a native lizard, like a bearded dragon - but not while i live in such a small apartment! a snake would be cool one day too, i think!
At the time i shot this there were 14 budgies - ten of them are the babies that i have other films on. But now i only have 5 - my 4 parents and one baby left... the others have all got new owners now.
It always better to have a roomy cage than to overcrowd it, as the birds will get aggressive with each other... but its hard to not want to get more - there are so cute and different looking budgies around!
You can use branches such as eucalyptus (aka gumtrees), wattle, she-oaks, grevillea, bottle brush, banskia and many other native trees and shrubs.
Its ok to feed them the flowers, nuts/seedpods, leaves, branches, bark of most common native australian plants. just watch out for wild-bird poop that could be on branches - that could spread diseases, so i inspect each branch and only give them the best ones.
Google images will show you lots of good pictures of the plants ive listed here.
thankyou! as a child i loved playing with my barbies and my favourite thing was making houses/mansions for them and decorating them... i think that explains why i love doing the aviary/cage decoration - i change them around every month or so to keep it interesting, and try to put new native plants/branches in twice a week

@LikeSheHas Yeah its pretty easy to see the difference between a happy bird and a sad one! I couldnt stand to keep birds if they were unhappy!
