We produce nearly as much hydroelectric power as we use in our homes. Our state donate lots of money to the preservation of the worlds rainforests (especially the Amazon) and we have massive research on stuff like solar power, wave power, wind power (expected to be a huge future industry in the north sea) etc... Of course tough, China has over 250 times as many people as Norway, so I do hope you invest more in green technology.

I know you are. A norwegian company is the only one (single company) that produces everything in the production line for solar panels, but the fabric is located in Singapore. I don't really worry about a factory being build nearby since it's not far away from the city core where factories aren't allowed to be build.

Of course tough, the term green technology is unclear, and its hard to know how much private companies invest in it...
@libbern how low or high the amount may seem, $43 billion is the largest sum of investment in Green energy in the world (2010) which is larger than that of the US's and China plans to spend even more during the next 5 years since it's one of the top priorities of the 12th five year plan. Maybe it could even top $700 billion at the end of this decade but this is just an estimate.

China's highspeed rail is now the longest in the world and we are currently developing a VacTrain capable of travelling 600 km/h. Another fine example of this is the straddling bus, which clearly shows China is innovating. I can name much much more about how China improves so fast under its current government but it would be a bad idea for a revolution.
And dont forget that the west have helped a lot in building the new China, both good and bad. After the introduction of capitalism in 1979 (?) western companies have flocked to China and invested a lot. Thus, lots of those companies producing green tech is western (with chinese workers, of course). If you love the party so much, you should know about this and that one of their main policies the last decades have been to be attractive for western investors.

If you're talking about the Green energy industry then yes, it's becoming very attractive for foreign green energy companies because the Chinese green energy market is the fastest growing in the world right now and it will remain like that for more than a decade. But Chinese macro-economic policies right now are more strict and Domestic companies are getting more attention.
That said, chinese people are (as I wrote) great. You will most likely contribute a lot in science and technology in the future on your own, as you have done for thousands of years (I'm not that ignorant that I dont know that^^) wether you have the party or not. Yeah the chinese are good at manufacturing, some innovation and especially backward engineering foreign goods (lax copyright laws). But in terms of innovation, the Chinese still lag far behind the west. I think it will take China another 30-50 years to adequately catch up to the west in terms of innovation. Also China lacks cultural 'soft power' which the United States has, yes many people look upon the US as an evil empire, but their culture is inescapable (i.e. Coke, McDonalds, Hollywood...).

Our state donate lots of money to the preservation of the worlds rainforests (especially the Amazon) and we have massive research on stuff like solar power, wave power, wind power (expected to be a huge future industry in the north sea) etc... Of course tough, China has over 250 times as many people as Norway, so I do hope you invest more in green technology.

I know you are. A norwegian company is the only one (single company) that produces everything in the production line for solar panels, but the fabric is located in Singapore. Cheap working chinese competitors will probably trash that fascility:O Of course, a totalitarian party does have its positive sides. That maglev track is indeed awesome. But I worry about the many people that cannot speak against the system (if f.ex. a polluting factory is built nearby...).

And let's not forget GCL Poly, another Chinese company which dominates China's cogeneration, inceneration and wind industries and is also a large supplier of Polysilicon and hydropower in China. I don't really worry about a factory being build nearby since it's not far away from the city core where factories aren't allowed to be build.

Since one can do about 10 times more for your money in China than in Norway (bnp per capita is around 6000 usd vs 60 000), that would account for an industrial output as well as research in Norway worth 430$ billion. Divide by 260 (number of people...) and it equals the use of around 1.7 billion usd in Norway. Good but not awesome. Of course tough, the term green technology is unclear, and its hard to know how much private companies invest in it...

@libbern how low or high the amount may seem, $43 billion is the largest sum of investment in Green energy in the world (2010) which is larger than that of the US's and China plans to spend even more during the next 5 years since it's one of the top priorities of the 12th five year plan. Maybe it could even top $700 billion at the end of this decade but this is just an estimate.

China's highspeed rail is now the longest in the world and we are currently developing a VacTrain capable of travelling 600 km/h. Another fine example of this is the straddling bus, which clearly shows China is innovating. I can name much much more about how China improves so fast under its current government but it would be a bad idea for a revolution.

And dont forget that the west have helped a lot in building the new China, both good and bad. After the introduction of capitalism in 1979 (?) western companies have flocked to China and invested a lot. Thus, lots of those companies producing green tech is western (with chinese workers, of course). If you love the party so much, you should know about this and that one of their main policies the last decades have been to be attractive for western investors.

If you're talking about the Green energy industry then yes, it's becoming very attractive for foreign green energy companies because the Chinese green energy market is the fastest growing in the world right now and it will remain like that for more than a decade. But Chinese macro-economic policies right now are more strict and Domestic companies are getting more attention.

Yeah the chinese are good at manufacturing, some innovation and especially backward engineering foreign goods (lax copyright laws). But in terms of innovation, the Chinese still lag far behind the west. I think it will take China another 30-50 years to adequately catch up to the west in terms of innovation. Also China lacks cultural 'soft power' which the United States has, yes many people look upon the US as an evil empire, but their culture is inescapable (i.e. Coke, McDonalds, Hollywood...).

The idea, back in 2000, was that the US's strength in the 21st century will innovation and technology. But from working in the industry I can tell you one thing for sure: the people that make up innovation has already outsourced to China, Chinese engineers already makes up a disproportionate share of US high tech industries, its only a matter of time before the location changes as well.

How is the modern American republic and empire different? We see a vast military-industrial complex that keeps rich and well connected stockholders insulated from the market. Visible as well are the American industrialists who moved their industries to a low wage, fuck the worker, fuck the environment haven of double-thinking communists. (Blood was spilled to keep the world safe from communism).
Americans are too trusting and too loyal. America's survival depends on their informed dissent.

I see your point, Guy, but if you can't see the difference b/t us and Rome, I think you need to take a step back. Our economy is not based on continual militaristic expansion (although it is helped by military backing if friendly oil states, grants). We don't have slaves any more. And we do not have a true emperor; despite Bush's best efforts, he will be gone after 8 years. Finally, no peasant enjoyed the relative power and wealth of our working class as compared to the elites.

In my analogy, the American worker would be the equivalent of the Roman yeoman, the slave the underpaid Chinese, or Vietnamese, or the sweatshop workers anywhere in the world. The concentration of power in the non-elected segment of the American govt is frightening, much of which is secret and hidden from view.

These populist reports always ignore comparative advantage. We are not hurting because China is taking over manufacturing...we're benefitting from their manufacturing. It makes us all richer by creating more jobs all around the world and giving us cheaper goods. The problem is our financial sector.

Disagree. Even now, the world steel business is still controlled by international companies in developed countries, such as ArcelorMittal.
Many international companies hold the high-margin chains of the business model, such as sales/marketing. Developing countries, like China, have the low-margin chain - manufacture.
So, financial crisis is not based on production. It is purely based on greedy of investment bankers and real estaters. They only care about higher ROI.

Calm down, guys. This is quite the strategy that US economy has been taking for the last 20 years. Moving the low end and high pollution business into developing countries. US economy keeps the high end, high margin, and low pollution business at home. US, by far, is the NO.1 country with highest GDP per capital. What are we complaining?

Quite optimistic there aren't ya... What are we complaining? Job loss, Home Foreclosures, Credit Crunch, health insurance and an increasing number of reasons where middle-class income is affected. Yeah, you can look at the economy and say...hmm..the numbers still look good and we got history... but the thing that causes the most concern is the livelihood of people. Americans are in Survivor mode. And the big question is how long can we maintain this mode 'til the economy comes back up again?

well it's the city's fault for not having a diversified economy. Heck there are many cities the same size as Pittsburgh that will not give a crapp if one industry falls. This is because they have plenty of other industries to back them all up.
Canada too has a city just like that, it's called Oshawa. Their economy is suffering a lot right now because their economy is too dependent on General Motors.
