Nice. Finally a rugby movie instead a boring american football movie. But i would preferred that they haven't done the haka, if there's no "kiwis" in there. Would be asome to show a real haka with the real rugby players instead of do that crap.

I'll watch it because any team thats obviously so pro new zealand and rugby should be supported.
actually the university of hawaii football (amercian not soccer) team did it to last year as well, and didn't lose until they're last game. its seen as an awesome pre-game pump-up/intimidation for americans, not neccessarilly a war dance ritual.
pourquoi en france les films arrivent toujours 1 ans ou 2 apreès leur sortie aux USA? j'aimerai tellement voir forever strong mais je ne le trouve pas en version francaise
You better fucking hope not. This movie blooooows. Listen to the director, he even sounds like a fag. Maybe next year when they cant play more than one international player at a time people will see they arent as good without a bunch of foriegners who have been playing their whole life and are older than everyone else
Well Well Well someone has finally upset some of Gelwix's Church College boys. I grew up with Mormon extended family and if there was ever a bunch of people who held americans in higher regard I am yet to meet any. I am still friends with a few mormons and honestly they can not get their heads out of Americas arsehole. Nice people but say something anti american and they suddenly want nothing to do with you.
I am so glad that this movie is made I will definitely go and watch it, Kia Kaha, a great moto.I am one of those Kiwi imports who played in the 89 championship team and I have no regrets for the experience that Larry Gelwix provided for me and I thank him for this.
I hope the message is good because it looks like the rugby is a bit mixed up with gridiron...lol (what's the deal with the haka?) Looking forward to seeing it though, great exposure for rugby in the US. We all know that rugby is the real men's football code, good luck!
hilarious Gelwix only really knows Maori from the Mormon community. Thats where all his blessings come from for the use of the haka. An incredibly small amount of maori are Mormon in comparison to the rest of maori. It might as well have been the blessing from a scientologist Maori ther are probalby comparable amounts of those. he said they had been using it for 30 years then why can't he say KA MATE properly or why the use of the plural 's' on the end of Haka they don't respect shit.
Te Kamate a Mormon tradition, what did that take place, when the gold plates landed.
Yes, you Utah types are pig ignorant, you do not have a clue about our culture but rave on that since other Polynesians live in Utah you have the right to our culture.
All Polynesians the same, that is like stating that all Europeans are the same, but you lot who live by a fairy tale know no better do you.
So which kaumatua okayed the use of Te Kamate by a Utah club, Iwi ? Hapu ?
bw92, it will seem cheesy to you because you get it, i.e., you understand rugby and everything around it. Americans don't. As an American, I started playing rugby 31 years ago in college and I still play. A movie like "Forever Strong" should help Americans understand at least a little bit about the sport, the teamsmanship, and the dedication of a sport like rugby.
Im going to play rugby this spring because i saw this movie. I also met larry gilwex, he is the nicest person you'll ever meet. and all that the movie portrays of him is ALL true.
I don't give a shit anymore...im sure this movie will be ok but will ultimately tank anyway...and at least they do the haka better than the Trojans. Chur
you asked me if i know highland rugby and I obviously do. Now i'm asking you do you know New Zealand and its people and what we think about another countries high school team performing something most new zealand kids only dream of performing for the All Blacks. Highland saw something they thought was cool and decided what the hell lets do it who cares what a little nation at the bottom of the world thinks, It'll get us chicks. Oh and when they came here thay didn't play any good teams.
dude relax.. you're fretting about nothing... you should be honored they emulate NZ... players idolize the all blacks, you're just mad you're not a movie star..
We live rugby here son. You guys just play it. I grew up playing in Wellington age grade representative teams...wellington is one of NZ strongest provincial teams and one of the worlds most famous rugby cities. Here we perform haka for those teams, but NOT "Ka Mate" that is reserved for our NEW ZEALAND teams it is a rite of passage if you are good enough to represent NZ and not just in rugby. DID YOU KNOW THAT unlvrebelx? I know who they are but do they care who "we" are?
regardless of whether the Ka Mate haka was introduced by Maori it is a Haka reserved for use by New Representative teams. Something that is distinctly ours. Fine highland respect
NZ rugby and Maori culture, have a meeting with kau Matua and construct a new one,not Ka Mate. NBA players are among the most revered athletes in CHINA but they don't sing the "Star Spangled Banner" before every game they play. All Americans would be up in arms if they thought Chinese Basketball teams did that.
FYI, this team has toured New Zealand various times, and just recently wrapped up a trip to NZ earlier this year. There's nothing that they do with the Haka that they haven't done with the utmost respect. razbra33, do you even know anything about this team other than they're American. I'm just asking, you may, but it really doesn't sound like it.
Highland are the holders of one the greatest records in world rugby. Almost 400 wins and only 9 loses. A 33 year old program and rightly the base material for a movie. The coach has strong ties to Church college of New Zealand (a mormon school). They are well known for importing players and "apparently" giving our players a better quality of life because we are regarded as a third world country! Or that is the story when explaining why so many Kiwi players are needed for an American team!
It was a great movie. The directors came to a special screening for the past two days, and I saw it just a few hours ago. It really was good. There were lots of funny parts in it too. (:
When I first saw this preview, I thought it must be based in NZ because of the haka. The haka should be left for the kiwis - you don't see Australians doing it, and we're next door neighbours with a huge kiwi population. Go see an authentic haka, and you will understand why it shouldn't be imitated. BTW - Aussies also kick arse in Rugby!
This team usually has a handful of Kiwis on the team. The team has strong ties to New Zealand and actually has permission from a chief to do the Haka that they do, which, by the way, they've been doing for about 20 years....they didn't just jump on the recent bandwagon of doing it. Its funny that people think that just because its in America, we've somehow been ignorant and brutishly disrespectful....when in reality the people that introduced the Haka to this team were Kiwis that played on it.
This looks great - some good actors in the piece and I don't think a major movie about Rugby has been made. Seems a little bit stereotypical on the college sports movie front but I'll reserve judgment and go see this movie (or on DVD) as soon as I can!
OMG!!! i can't wait to see this freaking movie!! it's about Highland High School's rugby team!!! i fraeking go there!!!!!!! i can't wait!!!!!!! :D :D :D
Highland has done a haka for 33 years because they believe it what it stands for. There is a strong NZ influence with coaches & style of play. Not only has the Maori community given their blessing to Highland's haka, the marae even wrote a special haka that Highland does in addition to Kama Te. For the movie, the studio flew in two Maori representatives to oversee the haka and persoanally approve its inclusion in the film. Its not only done with respect, its dome with belief.
The tackles looked like an SBW tackle...just like SBW did in Toulon France...lol and got sent off for it...ha ha ha...btw SBW is Sonny Bill Williams...this dude has one of the maddest should charge tackles in rugby league...pity those aren't allowed in rugby...otherwise dude will carve up...
LOL at all the people on here getting angst at the use of the haka on this movie. Get over it. What's done is done. I tautoko the movie for honouring our haka. Check the AB teams lately?? We've had tongans, samoans, fijians, pakehas performing the maori haka. So why not americans? As long as they respect our tangata whenua then all is good...
Ouch lol!!! I form america i think im a fairly good rugby player. Also my team doesnt try to do the haka none of us are from any island and have no reason to do it!!!
the highland rugby team actually perform the haka before games. I just hope that they have some sort of permission or reason to perform it, seeing as it couldn't have any less to do with America and it's only link to Rugby is the All Blacks
another studio following a classic underdog formula and using the "based on a true story" line in an attempt to authenticate what is essentially american ignorance toward a sport relatively unknown there.
not cool including the haka: i would assume new zealanders would be outraged exploiting their culture for such a frivolous film
I am a Kiwi and yeah that's what I felt but men, com'on give them a chance, they are americans (they make movies about everything and I won't be surprise if we soon watch a trailer about the life of Michael Phelps) is not like we could make people do or not do the Haka I mean I TOLERATE the use of the haka as long as they respect it and honor it
by the same token its pointless taking offense to what is being said hear! So unless you have something to add that has anything to do with what is being said...move on paluca
OK I HAVE A FEW PERSONAL MSG NOW>>>>THE HAKA ...THE ONE THEY PERFORM IS UNIQUE TO N-E-W Z-E-A-L-A-N-D!!! the haka they perform 'KA MATE' is for us. And for any smart ass that looks up its meaning you'll find its about death and life and the hairy man that performs it, but it was gifted to the All Blacks by the Ngati Toa tribe to represent US as a people. NOT a high school in the STATES. Comprise your own haka, use what YOU know! Be original!!Just stop doing that one!!!!
you missed the point of what i said....did that high school move to New Zealand? No! so again rugby movie fine. American high school doing a haka to reprersent their school ?...not fine...again regardless of who brought it to them. I saw the preview and as far as some of the tackles go....bullshit!!! I come from the greatest playing nation in rugby and never have i seen a teenage boy hit another player so hard with his ...wait for it... elbow...so the opposing player flipped in the air.
yea i have to agree with the tackle with the elbow.. and also i saw some tackles in the movie.. and some of them look really high. In high school rugby in canada at least, you are not a loud to make high tackles..
I totally agree on the HAKA being displayed in the film...The ALL BLACKS perform it because it's something that is part of the New Zealand and Maori culture....It has nothing to do with the team in America and the leader is calling it wrong anyway!!! His words sound jumbled!!
This is one of the best films based on a true story I've ever seen. Sean Astin and Big Buddah were awesome. It was the New Zealand players who taught the team how to do the Haka, and it became a part of who they are, and continue to be to this day. Don't knock anything about this until you have actually seen it. Not many films bring me to tears. This one did, and a lot of rip-roaring laughs as well.
We're not talking professional rugby here; it's a high school. Their record speaks for itself.
And the comment about other countries having a haka...yes other countries do but its not the New Zealand Haka. If the states want a haka for their movie go talk to some Native Americans down at the local Reserve Casino and get the blue print for a rain dance and stop useing things that bare no relation to your own country
OK actual New Zealander talking.yes the haka is over done by new zealanders.but it is a new zealand haka!! We can over do it because its ours. Its signifigance is only practical for new zealanders!!!! They play basketball and gridiron here in NZ but we don't sing the star spangled banner before each game.because its not ours to sing. Its fucking stupid that its in this movie.all these kids in the states will maybe see an actual all game one day and say "there's that thing they did in that movie"
bro. NZ over do the haka so much it ain't funny. The haka isnt sacred although I agree i am not sure why american rugby teams would do an NZ 'dance' and adopt so much NZ things.
I reckon America will one day become a power in rugby, it would be really cool if they did, alot more money would be introduced into it. USA have more playing rugby than NZ so in theory America should one day be able to compete with NZ and South Africa. looks like a pretty good movie though.
gizzmo your a dumbass. their are two maori starters on the nz team. all the pacific islander countries do it too. why should they not be allowed to do it? nz is famous for it cause their amazing at rugby so people know them.
"all the pacific islander countries do it too"? each Pacific Island country has a specific dance which is native to their homeland. they don't all do the haka. the haka is a Maori dance which is only performed by people from NZ...and apparently the US as well
Why the hell does everybody sound pissed about the fact that they are doing the haka? There are so many teams in the states that do it so its not new or anything.
thats a very stupid thing to say. i doubt that a lot of teams in the U.S. do the haka. they shouldnt do it, it should be something that they earn, something that they have to work for through blood, sweat, and tears. i dont think that they have any true maori on the team, which is just an insult to them, and a doubt that they actually got permission to do the haka, which is disrespectful on so many levels. i think that no team in the states should be allowed to do the haka, only new zealand
No no.. teams in the states do not do the real haka. Lots of teams make up there own versions that look similar so other teams think there badasses. Also, Gizzmo, why would you bring up the fact that there are no Maori on the teams. There are so many players on the all blacks that arnt Maori either.
So, because my University (University of Nevada Las Vegas) has Maori players (which WE DO!), and has one of the largest rosters full of Polynesian players, are you against the fact that we do the Haka?
Just so you know, we don't do the Haka, but had three opponents do it (Hawaii, BYU and University of Utah...which all have many polynesian players on their rosters). Johan Asiata, a Maori that plays for us, just thought it was ridiculous that they were doing the Haka, but didn't really care.
hidaka1223 i know you reffer to the 'all blacks' when you say 'arguably the best'. but in my opinion the only thing anyone could argue is how they are the biggest disapointment in RWC history. I mean dont get me wrong they are a very good team...but a disapointment none the less
Now that I've seen the trailer... I wish they had worked on the pronunciation of the haka a bit more than it sounds like they did... as in, a lot more.
What the heck! They make a movie about rugby and they base it in America?! Its as though they are taking the piss, esp with their attempt at the haka - which btw is awful. I just hope this movie doesn't get released here in NZ, because if it does, there are going to be a lot of angry people, or they will laugh because it is so ridiculous. Why couldn't they base it on American Football?
Personally, I'm a bit tired of football movies. And I would really like to be able to watch a rugby movie. There aren't too many available here.
And as for the haka. It is kinda stupid, but a lot of teams (both rugby and American football) do the haka or variations of it. Think of it as a tribute to what is arguably the best rugby team.
okay. At first i was like "oh cool a rugby film, most likey based in new zealand". Then as the video progressed it reminded more of an american football film. I realised its based in america. Why the hell are these guy doing the trying to do the haka? This just looks stupid. im sorry but to me this is just retarded
i love rugby with all my heart... and i cant accept American's doing THE haka... i think as bad ass as you are..only NZ can do it.. i hope it is better than the trailer looks.. (crosses fingers)
Utah (where the movie's based) has a huge polynesian population. Not necessarily Maori, but its not just the Maori's doing the versions of the "haka" you see around anyway. I guess you just hate Americans... What's new...we're used to it.
what a soundracks of this trailer ?

Don't know "Never Back Down", but this film is just premièring, so it must have been made after.
Anyway, you can always check it on IMDB, it's faster than waiting for an answer ;)

Well, considering NZ could only manage sending 4 athletes to both the 1920, and 1924 games, Is it surprising we didn't send a whole rugby team?
Winning rugby gold in 1920 is like the baseball world series, except more countries competed! 3!
Anyway, digs aside,
I would like to see US rugby develop, gotta be good for the international game.
I am impressed by by what I have seen of US rugby, not their winning record against rugby powerhouses, but their attitude to the game.
peace.
richardduncankey 3 years ago

Hapu ?

sorry but this looks really cheesy

bw92 3 years ago
bw92, it will seem cheesy to you because you get it, i.e., you understand rugby and everything around it. Americans don't. As an American, I started playing rugby 31 years ago in college and I still play. A movie like "Forever Strong" should help Americans understand at least a little bit about the sport, the teamsmanship, and the dedication of a sport like rugby.

you asked me if i know highland rugby and I obviously do.

I know who they are but do they care who "we" are?
razbra33 3 years ago
i just saw a screening of it, it was sweet
harrypotter1k 3 years ago
regardless of whether the Ka Mate haka was introduced by Maori it is a Haka reserved for use by New Representative teams.
All Americans would be up in arms if they thought Chinese Basketball teams did that.
razbra33 3 years ago
FYI, this team has toured New Zealand various times, and just recently wrapped up a trip to NZ earlier this year. There's nothing that they do with the Haka that they haven't done with the utmost respect. razbra33, do you even know anything about this team other than they're American. I'm just asking, you may, but it really doesn't sound like it.
unlvrebelx 3 years ago
Highland are the holders of one the greatest records in world rugby. Almost 400 wins and only 9 loses. A 33 year old program and rightly the base material for a movie. The coach has strong ties to Church college of New Zealand (a mormon school). They are well known for importing players and "apparently" giving our players a better quality of life because we are regarded as a third world country! Or that is the story when explaining why so many Kiwi players are needed for an American team!
razbra33 3 years ago
It was a great movie. The directors came to a special screening for the past two days, and I saw it just a few hours ago. It really was good. There were lots of funny parts in it too. (:
didntdaniel 3 years ago
When I first saw this preview, I thought it must be based in NZ because of the haka. The haka should be left for the kiwis - you don't see Australians doing it, and we're next door neighbours with a huge kiwi population. Go see an authentic haka, and you will understand why it shouldn't be imitated. BTW - Aussies also kick arse in Rugby!
zanity2 3 years ago
This team usually has a handful of Kiwis on the team. The team has strong ties to New Zealand and actually has permission from a chief to do the Haka that they do, which, by the way, they've been doing for about 20 years....they didn't just jump on the recent bandwagon of doing it. Its funny that people think that just because its in America, we've somehow been ignorant and brutishly disrespectful....when in reality the people that introduced the Haka to this team were Kiwis that played on it.
unlvrebelx 3 years ago
This looks great - some good actors in the piece and I don't think a major movie about Rugby has been made. Seems a little bit stereotypical on the college sports movie front but I'll reserve judgment and go see this movie (or on DVD) as soon as I can!

We've had tongans, samoans, fijians, pakehas performing the maori haka. So why not americans? As long as they respect our tangata whenua then all is good...

pathetic. crap film.
another studio following a classic underdog formula and using the "based on a true story" line in an attempt to authenticate what is essentially american ignorance toward a sport relatively unknown there.
not cool including the haka: i would assume new zealanders would be outraged exploiting their culture for such a frivolous film
fyfeindie 3 years ago 2
I am a Kiwi and yeah that's what I felt but men, com'on give them a chance, they are americans (they make movies about everything and I won't be surprise if we soon watch a trailer about the life of Michael Phelps) is not like we could make people do or not do the Haka I mean I TOLERATE the use of the haka as long as they respect it and honor it

Be original!!Just stop doing that one!!!!
razbra33 3 years ago
you missed the point of what i said....did that high school move to New Zealand? No! so again rugby movie fine. American high school doing a haka to reprersent their school ?...not fine...again regardless of who brought it to them. I saw the preview and as far as some of the tackles go....bullshit!!! I come from the greatest playing nation in rugby and never have i seen a teenage boy hit another player so hard with his ...wait for it... elbow...so the opposing player flipped in the air.
razbra33 3 years ago
yea i have to agree with the tackle with the elbow.. and also i saw some tackles in the movie.. and some of them look really high. In high school rugby in canada at least, you are not a loud to make high tackles..
rugbyaalex 3 years ago
High tackles are not allowed in Rugby at all!!
I totally agree on the HAKA being displayed in the film...The ALL BLACKS perform it because it's something that is part of the New Zealand and Maori culture....It has nothing to do with the team in America and the leader is calling it wrong anyway!!! His words sound jumbled!!
Slaterations11 3 years ago
This is one of the best films based on a true story I've ever seen. Sean Astin and Big Buddah were awesome. It was the New Zealand players who taught the team how to do the Haka, and it became a part of who they are, and continue to be to this day. Don't knock anything about this until you have actually seen it. Not many films bring me to tears. This one did, and a lot of rip-roaring laughs as well.
We're not talking professional rugby here; it's a high school. Their record speaks for itself.
iStageMom 3 years ago
And the comment about other countries having a haka...yes other countries do but its not the New Zealand Haka. If the states want a haka for their movie go talk to some Native Americans down at the local Reserve Casino and get the blue print for a rain dance and stop useing things that bare no relation to your own country
razbra33 3 years ago

USA have more playing rugby than NZ so in theory America should one day be able to compete with NZ and South Africa. looks like a pretty good movie though.

gizzmo your a dumbass. their are two maori starters on the nz team. all the pacific islander countries do it too. why should they not be allowed to do it? nz is famous for it cause their amazing at rugby so people know them.
firemonster98 3 years ago
"all the pacific islander countries do it too"? each Pacific Island country has a specific dance which is native to their homeland. they don't all do the haka. the haka is a Maori dance which is only performed by people from NZ...and apparently the US as well

Why the hell does everybody sound pissed about the fact that they are doing the haka? There are so many teams in the states that do it so its not new or anything.
RFU231 3 years ago
thats a very stupid thing to say. i doubt that a lot of teams in the U.S. do the haka. they shouldnt do it, it should be something that they earn, something that they have to work for through blood, sweat, and tears. i dont think that they have any true maori on the team, which is just an insult to them, and a doubt that they actually got permission to do the haka, which is disrespectful on so many levels. i think that no team in the states should be allowed to do the haka, only new zealand
gizzmo117 3 years ago
No no.. teams in the states do not do the real haka. Lots of teams make up there own versions that look similar so other teams think there badasses. Also, Gizzmo, why would you bring up the fact that there are no Maori on the teams. There are so many players on the all blacks that arnt Maori either.
RFU231 3 years ago
ya, but they got premission from the tribes to do it. what im trying to get at is that they didnt get premission so its disrespectful to the maori.
gizzmo117 3 years ago
So, because my University (University of Nevada Las Vegas) has Maori players (which WE DO!), and has one of the largest rosters full of Polynesian players, are you against the fact that we do the Haka?
Just so you know, we don't do the Haka, but had three opponents do it (Hawaii, BYU and University of Utah...which all have many polynesian players on their rosters). Johan Asiata, a Maori that plays for us, just thought it was ridiculous that they were doing the Haka, but didn't really care.

ratujr 3 years ago
Now that I've seen the trailer... I wish they had worked on the pronunciation of the haka a bit more than it sounds like they did... as in, a lot more.
Hidaka1223 3 years ago
What the heck! They make a movie about rugby and they base it in America?! Its as though they are taking the piss, esp with their attempt at the haka - which btw is awful. I just hope this movie doesn't get released here in NZ, because if it does, there are going to be a lot of angry people, or they will laugh because it is so ridiculous. Why couldn't they base it on American Football?
NZspud 3 years ago
Personally, I'm a bit tired of football movies. And I would really like to be able to watch a rugby movie. There aren't too many available here.
And as for the haka. It is kinda stupid, but a lot of teams (both rugby and American football) do the haka or variations of it. Think of it as a tribute to what is arguably the best rugby team.
