  • @marcelmombeekpiano ? You mean that about this performance, or Richter in general?

  • @donaldcallen Excuse me! I meant to reply to @Jarnobh! For sure I totally agree with your opinion!

  • @donaldcallen This is for sure not Hanon :) And even Hanon is musical, so I am really wondering why you are criticizing the musicality of his playing? It is part of the "musicality" to play it that fast, at that tempo.

  • Yes etudes are meant to teach and improve the technique of the pianist however on the level were Richter a more deep musical interpretation would be appropriate. He is playing the etude for the general public to enjoy not to learn the piano technique. Thus I think that Horowitz has the best interpretation of this piece. Not too fast where one can hear and enjoy the music.

  • @donaldcallen

No, this isn't. Maybe it might be on the right tempo, but then also, this is not what Chopin asked for. Chopin is a romantic pianist, do you hear and Richter, even if he's one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, is making his music ridiculous. This isn't far from ridiculous. Richter is a Bach-pianist. Chopin never said that you have to play this music like an idiot. And Richter is doing that.

  • @Jarnobh Richter is just Richter. And with all due respect, this interpretation conveys Richter's understanding of this piece of music, which is anything by "shallow". Cheers!

  • Awful. He's making Chopin ridiculous. He HAVE TO play Bach, not Chopin or Liszt.

  • @marcelmombeekpiano What is it exactly that makes you feel bored? Is it maybe an inability to comprehend Richter's playing or is it really hi?.Please explain I insist.Having no degrees I am always willing and eager to learn from experts in these matters.

  • @marcelmombeekpiano The beste stuurlui staan aan wal he Marcel..

  • no emotion :\

  • @marcelmombeekpiano This is actually an etude, no fantasy is necessarirly need ..... well....

  • actually can someone explain why is he throwing something onto the piano before he plays it ?

  • @EflatViola It's just his handkerchief, which he presumably keeps there to wipe his nose or sweat between pieces. Horowitz often did that as he got older and I often see Argerich doing it as well. Doesn't affect the sound, if that's what your wondering.

  • @marcelmombeekpiano Wow just wow why don't you go play this? You probably can't maybe to you he wasn't good but most people who are even some what good can't even play this. Until you play it that fast and put a link on Youtube no one cares what you have to say.

  • So, the lesson here is: Dont do drugs!

  • 'as an encore, it wasnt bad either...' ok, that made me lol

  • A Hydrogen Bomb is a childes play compare to what I witnessed, The Deep Blue would fry his circuits trying to match Sviatoslav's Richter's 100 megaton, blast from the fingertips of impeccable, brilliant, bombastic, and fully radioactive performance, executed at the speed of thought. Frederik Chopin's Right leg was bouncing up and down in his grave, and Chopin was saying Holy Shit !!!! I had no idea my Etude could become a Grand Transcendental Etude in the hands of a Genius, tisk tisk Franz ; )

  • Ok. . I was somewhat redundant. You will note that pianists on this level are "freaks" (not said in a pejorative sense) in their abilities in comparison with the vast majority of pianists. Of course the biggest freak was probably Bach who could improvise a 5 part fugue, including using his feet.

  • fake

  • The fastest version of this Etude I have heard. But Horowitz's version is much more musical and brings out much more of the contrasting melodies in the LH and RH.

Richter has incredible chops, the Horowitz version shows us his undeniable greatness as a musician and revealer of the piano repertory. Richter's notes tend to blur, but Horowitz's are crystal clear, like cascades of beautiful pearls.

  • @orqsilva well what hands other than LH or RH ?

and Horowitz has a much better recording.

  • How did the camera picture all of his finger movements. They are invisible to a human eye!

  • Wow, kept comparing interpretation of this, Cziffra is already very fast, but listening to this I'm wondering: Is there a sprinting competition on this piece?

  • I don't like it, too fast, I prefer Valentina Lisitsa's version.

  • i absolutely hateeeeeeeee thisssssss...............as always Richter is way too fasssstttt :S:S

  • @develish16 Nonsense. Richter rarely played things too fast. He played them exactly as the composer wrote them. His credo was to mirror the composer's intentions, without adding anything of his own. And the scary part is that he didn't miss a thing here.

  • @TomBarrister yes he is ... I've listened to many things played by him...i just cant remember exact examples...but anyways my point is that he always goes beyond what the composer wrote and what is possible....like the above example....he killed the music in the etude man....thats just not right and i dont thin chopin would be happy with that...besides this etude is Allegro Con Fuoco not presto !!!! should be played at 120 bpm ( not 170-180 !!).

  • Faster please !

  • To those saying he played this too fast:

This is an etude. A study. A piece written to address a specific technical difficulty in order to improve your skill at it. Yes, Chopin's etudes are still quite musical, but at their core they are pieces designed to improve technique. Taken this way, an etude can never be too fast or too slow, as it's based on the playing ability of the pianist.

  • @royo90 but also with chopin, the musicality leads everything. the tempo must never be at the cost of musicality or the aim of the studies is miss. There is musicality in is interpretation, but I think he could give a little more with a slower speed. The mark off the tempo on the partition he wrote are probably a little higher then what he intended them to be because the metronome weren't as accurate as ours. Anyway I guess any tempo could be good if that is how you can put musicality in it.

  • @royo90 and the possibility of the piano

  • aaaa to slow!!!faster, FASTER MR.RICHTER

  • @belialah that's what she said. haha JK i like your comment :D

  • 2 fast.... chopin whould shit on his face xD but he's still one of the best

  • holy crap, that was too fast... too fast for the music, but i have to say it is amazing he could do that...

  • He was a Robot.

  • @Herteleer I can't understande why we keep making these statements about interpretations by great musicians. We don't have knowledge or authority to do this, it's all about aesthetics and taste. Don't like Richter's interpretation, go listen to Horowitz'. Plenty of good playing out there.

  • who is kissin????

  • no one can play it like this

  • i pressed play for this video, and practically leapt out of my chair and muttered, "holy crap, that's fast!" i've never heard it performed this fast before! i like when music is played the fastest :D

  • in cre di ble tempo !

  • What's the point of playing it so fast? Just to prove you can? Richter was amazing, no doubt, but this piece simply can't be made to sound musical at this speed. Check out Horowitz's version; it's about 20% slower, but lovely! Argerich plays as fast as Richter but sounds even worse.

  • @rnewman25

You clearly know nothing about Richter. He wouldn't have played a piece and have it in his documentary just to show off his technique. He played only to mirror the intentions of the composer. By saying this doesn't "sound musical" you're directly contradicting Richter's interpretation of the piece. A very passionate one, no less. Merely because you are used to slower interpretations does not make this a worse one... also, I'm inclined to trust Richter's interpretation over yours.

  • @rnewman25 IT'S AN ETUDE!!!!!!! Chopin hated Liszt's interpretations of his pieces, yet said that Liszt played his (Chopin's) etudes the best!

if anyone knows anything about Liszt, it's that he was a show-off, and generally liked to play pieces fast with lots of flare!

so we can conclude that Chopin liked the way Liszt played the etudes FAST and like a LION (I think that was the expression he used)

    CHOPIN LOVED FAST ETUDES!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheOneWingAngeI what ur saying doesnt make sence....at first ur saying that chopin hates liszts interpretations and then ur saying that he liked it....well chopin liked liszt and was impressed by his interpretations of chopins etudes. thats why chopin only gave small concerts instead of big ones.

  • @rnewman25 Horowitz is himself as usual and Argerich is probably most likely due to nerves as usual.

  • @rnewman25 argerich doesnt play THIS etude in richters tempo...whats wrong with ur ears??

  • @rnewman25 and ur wrong ..musicality dont have to be palyed slow and quiet...musicality can also be shown in, with passionate, fast played etudes or others like this here.

  • good but a bit slow ha ha!!!!!

  • Whoa!

and I thought freddy kempf was fast!!!!

totally amazing, musicaly speaking, though not better than horowitz.

  • One take too. No splicing and dicing. No mixing and matching. The real thing. Like a live performance. I am convinced that some of the stuff I see on youtube is messed with. Valentina Lisitsa, for instance. I would guess that the recording might be made separately from the video, takes and retakes, spliced, edited, etc.

  • It's a fucking showing off version.

damn ! you should watch Kissin's.

  • ugh. Not Kissin again....

  • This piece does sound nice this fast. The sound quality of this recording doesn't. I am convinced there would be less negative replies if this had been a higher quality recording.

  • his hands at 1:26 are simply a blur....

  • What a horrible version! Much prefer Horowitz version. this just sounds like gabble of notes. Not that Richter isn't amazing, so talented to play this fast! But the piece just doesn't sound nice this fast.

  • lol, youtube kids. I'd love to hear you try and debate that "fast isn't good" with Richter. Hmm, knob who fancies himself an interpreter of music vs. one of the greatest pianists of all time. Wonder who'd win that debate.

  • there are some seconds- allthough its so fast you hear everything tone by tone...if this is not amazing- i cannot imagine what could be more amazing than that....

  • Oh fuck. My sinews exploded just watching this.

  • Oh My God that was INSANELY FAST..

  • muy superficial :(

  • Richters face has a sense of power over it..

as in the revolutionary etude from chopin like he is angry ;)

  • extremely sexy.

  • Id say this measures about a 4 on the Richter scale :)

  • @whydontyoutry Now we know why earthquakes are measured in Richter scales

  • @ilikehaku1100 That comment had 2 funny aspects on it :)

  • @whydontyoutry lmao...very witty

  • Fast does not equal to good...those who think the faster the better obviously aren't that educated in music...

  • I couldn't explain it any more clearer! You are so correct. GOSH! i wish there were ppl like you. Honestly, i think the version by Julius19 is WAYY better.

  • LMFAO x 10 * googol

funniest video/performance/recording/interpretation of a classical work EVER

  • Democracy has one unpleasant side-effect. Every idiot thinks he can criticize everything, no matter how absurd and groundless his utterings are.

  • Pity no one was around at the time to remind Richter that Chopin was an artist NOT an Olympic athlete; Richter seems to have got confused between the two disciplines and the end result is one of the worst performances I've ever heard of this piece.

  • Honestly, I think that this interpretation is the best ever. I can't even listen so snails, trying to justify themselves. This speeds allows to the artist to fully express himself, instead of just trying to type some notes....

  • people who try to play these etudes....

waste too much time on piano.....

    playing only notes...

and they dont know what is a dominant chord....

  • just say who is able to play like this has really this piece in hands... richter was very good in many ways even if I don t like some of his interpretations ( specially in bach) . Yes this is an authentic speed !!!!!

  • your comments are sucx! you are really not deserve to watch richter.

Richter was unique pianist and you are nothing. So dont say he was gay otc... He is dead and he deserve to rest in peace so dont harrase.

  • Comment removed

  • dont you prefer moskofsky or moshles...?

  • wonderful

  • i dont think this thing is art.....

    only virtuosity....

    but not art...

    i dont like etudes....

  • etudes means pratices, ... whether it is an art, ... well I guess you can have your own opinion, chopin wrote them with the intention for technical trainings

  • they wernt originally written to be listened to, but yet they are, if you listen to number six and some other etudes you will see that some of them have beautiful melodies, but keep in mind that it is not made for that.

  • Ok now I believe that I´m gonna get 10 thumbs down but..

I do think this is speeded up because of his un natrual movements. I do think that you can play in this speed it it´s not so strange, just his movements!

  • It's not sped up This is a possible speed. Have you what the videos of cziffra trancriptions... Those movements are not natural

  • I've never heard ANYONE play this fast...WOW

  • You're right about him being a melancholic man and the your comments at the end are funny, the only problem there was he was gay.

  • He gives a new meaning to the term hyperkinetic!

  • Agree! But why?! It' s nonsense! Richter was a great pianist. He don' t need these tricks ^_^

  • I'm not so sure... if you watch him playing the revolutionary etude, his fingers move already VERY fast, he could just have made it a bit faster, and with both hands. The video is old, so the quality doesn't let us see every fast moves, especially the moving fingers. I don't see why it would have been speeded up, do you think a fan of Richter wanted to prove that he was the fastest pianist? It's nonsense in deed!

anyway, very impressive performance, it could be a bit more expressive although.

  • this is faster than cziffra? huh?

  • this dude should have been taken to a mental hospital

  • Mon dieu... !!

  • My friend just finished playing this....

  • OK OK OK He's an alien.....unbelievable!!!!breathtaking

  • Is he human?

  • this man... is not human. ive tried this etude b4, 0:38-0:43 is really hard... im so fucking jealous... >:( great performance tho.

  • You're frikin right man! I can't even sustain that speed at all!

  • @caduceusguru try learning some new words also.... f bomb always so classy

  • Qué bárbaro!, qué manos!, qué velocidad! qué fascinante!

  • whoa! amazing!!!

  • Was this taken from the 'Richter: the Enigma' DVD?

  • looks like it.

  • CANT'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hooooooo0o0ly mother of mercy

  • MY GOSH

  • increible
