@donaldcallen This is for sure not Hanon :) And even Hanon is musical, so I am really wondering why you are criticizing the musicality of his playing? It is part of the "musicality" to play it that fast, at that tempo.
Yes etudes are meant to teach and improve the technique of the pianist however on the level were Richter a more deep musical interpretation would be appropriate. He is playing the etude for the general public to enjoy not to learn the piano technique. Thus I think that Horowitz has the best interpretation of this piece. Not too fast where one can hear and enjoy the music.
No, this isn't. Maybe it might be on the right tempo, but then also, this is not what Chopin asked for. Chopin is a romantic pianist, do you hear and Richter, even if he's one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, is making his music ridiculous. This isn't far from ridiculous. Richter is a Bach-pianist. Chopin never said that you have to play this music like an idiot. And Richter is doing that.
@Jarnobh Richter is just Richter. And with all due respect, this interpretation conveys Richter's understanding of this piece of music, which is anything by "shallow". Cheers!
@marcelmombeekpiano What is it exactly that makes you feel bored? Is it maybe an inability to comprehend Richter's playing or is it really hi?.Please explain I insist.Having no degrees I am always willing and eager to learn from experts in these matters.
@EflatViola It's just his handkerchief, which he presumably keeps there to wipe his nose or sweat between pieces. Horowitz often did that as he got older and I often see Argerich doing it as well. Doesn't affect the sound, if that's what your wondering.
@marcelmombeekpiano Wow just wow why don't you go play this? You probably can't maybe to you he wasn't good but most people who are even some what good can't even play this. Until you play it that fast and put a link on Youtube no one cares what you have to say.
A Hydrogen Bomb is a childes play compare to what I witnessed, The Deep Blue would fry his circuits trying to match Sviatoslav's Richter's 100 megaton, blast from the fingertips of impeccable, brilliant, bombastic, and fully radioactive performance, executed at the speed of thought. Frederik Chopin's Right leg was bouncing up and down in his grave, and Chopin was saying Holy Shit !!!! I had no idea my Etude could become a Grand Transcendental Etude in the hands of a Genius, tisk tisk Franz ; )
Ok. . I was somewhat redundant. You will note that pianists on this level are "freaks" (not said in a pejorative sense) in their abilities in comparison with the vast majority of pianists. Of course the biggest freak was probably Bach who could improvise a 5 part fugue, including using his feet.
The fastest version of this Etude I have heard. But Horowitz's version is much more musical and brings out much more of the contrasting melodies in the LH and RH.
Richter has incredible chops, the Horowitz version shows us his undeniable greatness as a musician and revealer of the piano repertory. Richter's notes tend to blur, but Horowitz's are crystal clear, like cascades of beautiful pearls.
Wow, kept comparing interpretation of this, Cziffra is already very fast, but listening to this I'm wondering: Is there a sprinting competition on this piece?
@develish16 Nonsense. Richter rarely played things too fast. He played them exactly as the composer wrote them. His credo was to mirror the composer's intentions, without adding anything of his own. And the scary part is that he didn't miss a thing here.
@TomBarrister yes he is ... I've listened to many things played by him...i just cant remember exact examples...but anyways my point is that he always goes beyond what the composer wrote and what is possible....like the above example....he killed the music in the etude man....thats just not right and i dont thin chopin would be happy with that...besides this etude is Allegro Con Fuoco not presto !!!! should be played at 120 bpm ( not 170-180 !!).
@TomBarrister yes he is ... This is an etude. A study. A piece written to address a specific technical difficulty in order to improve your skill at it. Yes, Chopin's etudes are still quite musical, but at their core they are pieces designed to improve technique. Taken this way, an etude can never be too fast or too slow, as it's based on the playing ability of the pianist.
@royo90 but also with chopin, the musicality leads everything. the tempo must never be at the cost of musicality or the aim of the studies is miss. There is musicality in is interpretation, but I think he could give a little more with a slower speed. The mark off the tempo on the partition he wrote are probably a little higher then what he intended them to be because the metronome weren't as accurate as ours. Anyway I guess any tempo could be good if that is how you can put musicality in it.

Horrible. Chopin would be disgusted. Listen this piece by Horowitz or Askenazy, and learn the difference between a circustrick by a trained monkey or the performance of great music by real artists.
@Herteleer I can't understande why we keep making these statements about interpretations by great musicians. We don't have knowledge or authority to do this, it's all about aesthetics and taste. Don't like Richter's interpretation, go listen to Horowitz'. Plenty of good playing out there.
i pressed play for this video, and practically leapt out of my chair and muttered, "holy crap, that's fast!" i've never heard it performed this fast before! i like when music is played the fastest :D
What's the point of playing it so fast? Just to prove you can? Richter was amazing, no doubt, but this piece simply can't be made to sound musical at this speed. Check out Horowitz's version; it's about 20% slower, but lovely! Argerich plays as fast as Richter but sounds even worse.
You clearly know nothing about Richter. He wouldn't have played a piece and have it in his documentary just to show off his technique. He played only to mirror the intentions of the composer. By saying this doesn't "sound musical" you're directly contradicting Richter's interpretation of the piece. A very passionate one, no less. Merely because you are used to slower interpretations does not make this a worse one... also, I'm inclined to trust Richter's interpretation over yours.
@TheOneWingAngeI what ur saying doesnt make sence....at first ur saying that chopin hates liszts interpretations and then ur saying that he liked it....well chopin liked liszt and was impressed by his interpretations of chopins etudes. thats why chopin only gave small concerts instead of big ones.
@rnewman25 and ur wrong ..musicality dont have to be palyed slow and quiet...musicality can also be shown in, with passionate, fast played etudes or others like this here.
One take too. No splicing and dicing. No mixing and matching. The real thing. Like a live performance. I am convinced that some of the stuff I see on youtube is messed with. Valentina Lisitsa, for instance. I would guess that the recording might be made separately from the video, takes and retakes, spliced, edited, etc.
This piece does sound nice this fast. The sound quality of this recording doesn't. I am convinced there would be less negative replies if this had been a higher quality recording.
What a horrible version! Much prefer Horowitz version. this just sounds like gabble of notes. Not that Richter isn't amazing, so talented to play this fast! But the piece just doesn't sound nice this fast.
