  • The only race that beat this is Monaco GP 1996.

  • "...and there goes Patrese, Patrese's on the move again very fast, but no hope of catching Pironi... who goes into the tunnel for the la-Is that Pironi stationary? IT IS! MY GOODNESS! THE THIRD LEADER IN TWO LAPS!"

  • More like "Murray Walker, with Monaco GP"..

  • no one wanted to win lol :P

  • Heard of the story when Bernie Ecclestone was watching this race? He was still the head supremo at Brabham and overjoyed that Prost was out and his driver Patrese was going to win it.

When Patrese spun out, Ecclestone got furious and thought "well, there goes the race win!!", immediately left and drove to the airport. When he landed home in England, they congratulated him for the win in the Monaco GP. He was surprised to hear what had happened when he had left, and that Patrese DID win afterall

  • People only remember this GP for the mad last few minutes, but let's not forget that it had been processional for the other 95%. Similar really to Belgium 08. The proportion of races that are compelling/average/boring from start to finish (and those that are remembered for only one or two brief incidents) are about the same as they've ever been. We only ever get the highlights in retrospect.

  • @kisbie take your point but the last two laps of this race were extraordinary

  • Murray Walker what a hero

  • LOL @ 1:02

  • "well we're having this ridiculous situation where we're all standing at the start-finish line waiting for a winner to come past and we don't seem to be getting one!"

    Haha, classic James Hunt :)

  • And this is why we need poor reliability to come back!!

  • Well Lotus are making a comeback in 2010, plenty of unreliability there XD

  • Tell them not to use exotic materials....use aluminium and titanium on the engines, metal suspensions, ban paddle shifts, put a clutch paddle besides the brakes and you'll have a good F1 season I think

  • I agree, except that aluminium is highly flammable, and some other materials that you mention might also be unsafe. I agree 100% about the clutch pedal though.

  • Aha! See what we got? Safe cars but boring racing. But I rather have that than seeing drivers die horrible deaths like in the old days...

  • I agree with this, and this is also why I'm prepared to put up with racing that's a little more boring, knowing that horrible things have happened in the past, and safety has improved immensely since. And depending on a number of factors, sometimes there is an interesting season, like 2009, and I enjoy those fully and thankfully. =3

  • actually from 2005-2009 f1 has been adsolutely brilliant and this season doesn't appear to be any exception...

the problem in 1998-2008 was lack of mechanical grip and in 2009 it was the diffusers but their was still a lot of good racing, you can't deny that...

  • My favourite race from my favourite year FAB!

  • Incredible! I always thought Monaco 96 was a strange race, but this even beats it!

  • thanks to all who post formula one videos.! i live in the states and only can watch F1 during the season.and never during the high times of the 70s,80's w/walker and hunt.priceless videos.ty

  • Really stadioazteca, great days!!

  • Walker and Hunt were a FANTASTIC pairing...how I miss them. Bring back Murray!

  • @bradgotch then dont fcking watch it then!

typical aussie whinging his nuts off about a pom!

  • great race, great drivers, great commentary...great days!!

  • Unbelievable.

  • Classic Walker/Hunt

  • Comment removed

  • Man, was like Monaco GP nobody wanted to win!!!

  • You right

  • So true. :D

  • The sound at 2:08 is just incredible.

  • What a race, its a shame was 26 years ago. I was only a few months old.

  • If someone had protested, then Patrese might have been disqualified for receiving the push start. However, no one wanted to lodge such a protest as Patrese was the only car to go full distance, and therefore his disqualification would have meant the whole race being declared null and void!

  • Comment removed

  • The race would *not* be declared void, read the rules!

I always heard/read that he managed to bumpstart the engine, because after all it is a downhill!!!

Remember that in those days with mechanical gearboxes that would be possible... as when you don't have battery to start the car (so you previously parked on a downhill): you put 2nd gear, hold the throttle to the metal and when you have some speed, you release the clutch.

Another thing is: in those days, drivers knew what to do with a car! :D

  • FANTASTIC

turbos were unreliable, this isnt a sport, only car was important ;) but was like wrestling, only show.

  • The first win of my favorite driver off all times. ah F1 was amazing in those years...

  • What can you say about that? Fantastic!

These clips are so much better with the original commentary. Thanks so much for posting, if you have any more we would love to see them!!

  • how comical would it have been if patrese had dropped it at la rasscase?

i miss the exciting days of F1. i don't think the turbo era can ever be emulated and it was surely F1 at it's prime with the best drivers in the world driving the fastest cars in the world!

  • its because every team almost had a chance of winning a race as the turbos were unreliable and the normally aspirated engines could pik up a win - the champ results: 1. Rosberg - 44 2. Pironi - 39 Watson - 39 4. Prost - 34 5. Lauda - 30 6. Arnoux - 28 and in 8th with only 1/2 a season of racing tambay - 25 pnts - amazing season - strikes, 11 different winners, betrayal and 2 deaths, no one winning more than twice - and people say 2007 was an amazing season!!

  • Comment removed

  • Comical indeed... but Mansell (4th, +1 lap), de Angelis (5th, +1 lap), Brian Henton (8th, +4 laps) and Marc Surer (9th, +6 laps) were running, so eventually any of these could win... had they been able to reach the finish line!

Actually, considering Patrese finished the race at 1:54:11.259, so nor Henton nor Surer would win, because the race would be stopped anyway on the 02:00:00.000 marker, and it would be difficult for Henton to make 4 laps in under 6 minutes, since fastest lap was 1:26.354.

  • Not sure if anyone knows this, but if Patrese hadnt have recovered after his spin then Mansell and De Angelis wouldve come 1st and 2nd and Brian Henton (heard of him?) may have come 3rd!

  • ye henton raced for arrows but are you sure that he would have come 3rd cos he is stated as finish 8th 4 laps down so that would mean that the retired cars in fornt of him would still have beaten him

  • Street racing at it best.

  • that's what I call "The God's Will"

    lol

  • DeCesaris must have been delighted he hadn't crashed out by that stage. The one time he doesn't crash and has a chance of winning the car runs out of fuel. They probably light fueled him because the mechanics didn't think he'd last the race distance.

  • 1:36-1:42. That has to be the most amazing thing that a motor racing commentator will ever say! James Hunt and Murray Walker are absolute legends!

  • Man that was like a MESSY DIVORCE....

  • The commentary is absolutely brilliant, Murray Walker and James Hunt. Danish F1 commentary is just....well......boring!

  • This was one amazing race ... so near and yet so far for Derek Daly and Andrea de Cesaris! It's great to hear the original Walker/Hunt commentary too.

  • great race, great season despite the loss of life!

  • at least this was more exciting than the rubbish thats on F1 now......this was when everyone was at their wits end to the conclusion of the race

  • Something I've never seen before! Patrese has a lot of CULO.

  • aparently patrese didn't know he had one the race and was suprised when the marshalls directed him to the podium and even more suprised when he was told to go to the top step

  • F1 gone crazy! I miss days like these. This was classic edge of your seat racing.

  • agree entirely

  • Brings back many happy memories - thanks for posting

  • When This Grand Prix Was On I Was Only Like 2,3 Or 4 Years Old.

Also Didn't Keke Rosberg Win This Coz I Remember My Father Taped This When It Was On. Maybe It Was The Year After.

  • no Ricardo Patrese won this race

  • Kek Rosberg won a year later in 1983 in Williams Ford.

  • Great race. One of the best races for me. I was 11 !

  • Its Sad For The other People Having To Retire In The 3 Laps! :(

    Nice Video!

  • Another one of 'Murray's Magic Moments'

  • Dulac79 It Is Not True!

I Tryed It And Did Not WOrk!

  • If these things were true I'd be dead a hundred times by now.

  • never say it'ok until the end of the last lap......

  • fantastic murray walker trousers on fire moment!!!

  • That was crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
