  • thnx! fuckin' lot!

  • Bravo! It must feel good to be able to play whenever you want.

  • Axe. I was wondering if you could do a gear video and settings for how you achieve your tone for Tool. Thanks for the vids!

  • Whoa I play that quite differently, such that all of the triplets are pull-offs on the D string. For instance, the commonly used F triplet would go F-E-D or 3p2p0. When you play your way it sounds really good but I can't get it to sound right. Any suggestions?

  • @TheDobligator downpick the pull off then upstroke the A string. Once the rhythm gets tight you can slur the entire thing.

  • @axeofcreation Thanks!

  • I'm sure Adam uses the roll technique where the A string is rolled over to emit the note.

  • @KangarooBeStoned ok...and that means what? Again, if you like the muted note then awesome. I prefer the muted open string. Really emphasizes the "roll" sound. Play what sounds and feels best to you not how Jones or anyone else plays it. It's so minute in the grand scheme of things. Not like your changing the harmony

  • I usually pull off on the D string AND the A string, kind of like a ghost note. Very good video though. It's too bad more people don't play in odd times.

  • this answered a bunch of questions. it's crazy how picky people can get on this video though

  • @luvisacigarette8 Never ceased to be amazed. Thanks!!

  • Thank you very much, this was a HUGE help- took me a while to get used to the intro, but turns out I had been doing it wrong for months anyway. Very nice job!

  • ok good lesson but i was wondering if you could put up a lateralus lesson as well as a parabola lesson these are by far my favorite tool songs and would love to know how to play them correctly i got a good jump on lateralus but as far as parabola it has me licked i think its bc i might be in the wrong tuning but I'm not sure aren't all tool songs played in drop -d ??? if you could find the time to post those 2 requests it would be greatly appreciated

  • Will you upload some more videos of how to play tool songs? Very nice stuff :)

  • I didn't use any compression.

  • @axeofcreation great sound

  • hey man nice job, cool poster

  • my best friend has that SAME tool poster

  • the open a string doesn't sound right to me

  • @bebeard17 Understandable. It's quick and muted. Try just pulling off to it with a good mute. You might prefer that way.

  • I know it might be annoying, but I wanted to know what strings you like to have on your guitars (especially on the Agile and the Schecter)??? I'm asking here coz it doesn't say on your gear page. Also how much did that Schecter set you back? And what pickups are in the Agile and the Schecter. Thanks.

  • @Yellow73mm I use Ernie Ball strings. The pickups are stock in the Agile (I couldn't tell you what they are specifically) and the Schecter has DiMarzio, X2N (bridge) and PAF7.

  • its right for the most part but you dont pick the A for the triplet in the beginning. u use your left hand and roll and pull off the d and then the a

  • @Bassmastasnake33 As I've said, Jones plays it by rolling is hand through the pull off as you said BUT I like the way attacking the A string sounds. Play however you see fit!

  • thank you DERS for teaching me one of the greatest songs known t man kind!!!

  • aaaaah too much compression :D

  • @apixx1 i agree!!!! i was going to say that!

  • @5nugg I agree with axeofcreation. Adam uses this same technique on Eulogy. Try it, it feels and sounds right.

  • Thanks so much man! Been struggling with this one for awhile. Really appreciate your explainations!

  • @edge9in Thanks! Glad the video helped out.

  • what effects do u use? (amp, pedals and setting)

  • @steveo2440 Gear is on the channel page

  • I was struggling with this song for a while but with this lesson so much easier...thanks!!

  • @kotnbronson Awesome,thanks!

  • I've been listening to it more and now i'm second guessing myself, haha. If any body had a program to slow it down but keep it in the same key, tell me if it's 5 or 6.

  • @dmoreau3000 It's 5 :) I know it can be hard to hear.

  • @dmoreau3000 check out the Amazing Slow Downer

  • Edit below, dont repeat on the 6th. Just 3, 6, 1, 10, and repeat.

  • I'm 100% positive the intro starts on the 3rd fret, then it goes to the 6th fret, not 5th. Then repeat on the 6, 1, and 10 fret. Listen to it very carefully on the album. The way your playing it almost gives it "major" sound as opposed to a "minor" sound, if that makes sense. I've been playing bass for years and that's how it's played. The bass and guitar pretty much follow that same patter. Just an observation.

  • good work man

When are you doing "Triad"? ;)

  • im gonna break into your house and steal that big ass tool poster on the wall. Where you get that from?

  • i guess others might have mentioned this but the a-string is not touched during the intro riffs. Its all bottom d-string, and you need to have the right technique to pull it off. It sort of consists of a pull-off with your left hand inbetween alternate 16th picks with your right hand, and then it will sound correct ;).

  • @5nugg Sorry man but I would adhere to the lesson. Jones has been using this technique for years now. He's mimicking a tom roll not playing 16th notes on the low string. Thanks!

  • you sir are extremely badass. i have a agile silverburst les paul, and i have that poster!

  • @AcidSh33tz You have good taste! Thank man!

  • Dude what type of amp do you use and what's your setting it's sounds amazing.

  • @3xplisit My gear is listed on my channel page. I'm using a Peavey Vypyr Head, Diezel amp modeler. Thanks!

  • yeah guys, the intro is right

  • my neighbors pump beiber one more time, I'm going to crank the old 4x12, grab my ax and chug this riff!!!

  • you should really retract or amend this video. such a mistake of a simple riff in the intro really doesn't show well

  • @cheaptrades I used to play it that way when I originally learned the song then after careful inspection I realized its not played that way.

  • @axeofcreation really, what caused your realization?

  • yeah that intro is completely wrong. he's playing 3 notes every time i.e. 3p2p0 6p5p0 2p1p0 10p9p0

  • @cheaptrades @lukitzar Sorry to disappoint you guys but try and listen a little more carefully. He's definitely not playing the intro with 3 notes. It absolutely is the pull-off motif Jones uses all the time. Watch him play it live.

  • DUDE you've TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTALLY got the intro wrong

  • are you sure thats how the opening riff is played? because ive seen it been played by pulling off the low and and dragging your finger and pulling off the a string too which creates a triplet

  • @TrippyTro See comments below. Personally I like the sound of attacking the 5th string. Try this...play the first two intro passes with the dead note then open up the 5th string when the drums kick in. Play what you think sound best.

  • @TrippyTro

I was thinking the same in that its not picked but pulled off just after pulling off the open E.

  • Liked and subscribed.

  • @punkmusicmetal Awesome!!!

  • ridiculous good job I could see you struggling at some parts, its sooo easier just to play, your teaching is amazing.

  • @gabeisatool Many thanks

  • great lesson,keep it on!

  • @lateralsx7 Thanks!!

  • O it awesome man but I live in an apartment so it never gets to spread its wings :( haha

  • O I see! My setup is a B-52 AT-100 all tube head thru a standard half stack marshall cab and my stompbox is a metal zone.

  • @Toolminion1 Nice. How do you like the B-52? Make sure that you don't use the Amps distortion with the pedal. The pedal should only be used when the B-52 is set on the clean channel.

  • I've always heard that word scooped being used but haven't ever really know wat they mean....I understand turn up ur mids but what of the other knobs to let the "boost" shine thru. Suggestions for my head/stompbox settings? (Treble @ 3 o'clock) etc. Thanks man u got a killer vid here

  • @Toolminion1 It's means your boosting your Bass (lows) and Treble (highs) and reducing your Mids, thus creating a scooped sound (try and picture an inverse Bell curve). Every amp is different so the level of each will always be slightly different. This is a great starting point. What's your setup?

  • Wat r ur amp/stompbox settings at?

  • @Toolminion1 It's your basic "scooped" EQ setting. Boost the Mids a little more than usual.

  • Adam Jones is a rhythmic monster. Nice breakdown!

  • @Caitanyadasa108 Definitely! Thanks a lot!

  • how long does it take you to learn a tool song?

  • @sahilius usually about a day, depending on song.

  • u looked baked

  • @denvermedibuds420 not this time. sorry to disappoint

  • You have set up your noise gate a bit too high :) Cheers!

  • @Kropek13 Thanks

  • Damn man, that was awesome. I been trying to learn this song for a while. Thx for the great tutorial !

  • @Ponskippa awesome!! Thanks a lot.

  • @BishopMuzoreva It's an Agile guitar, though Im not quite sure of which model.

  • What amp and pups are you using? pedals too? thanks! Kick ass video!

  • you are playing it wrong, you just need to slide your finger through the 5th string

  • @faaip0de0oaid Not wrong. Just different. I personally prefer to play (strike) the open A (muted). It feels much more natural and really captures the "tom roll" feel.

  • Uh, the 3 5 3 2 at 03:22 has the 2 played as triple again, just like in the beginning... at least that's what it sounds like on the record. I actually played it like you do for a long time until I discovered that he plays it different.

  • @JackCarver10 It's actually later in the song where the 2 has the triplet on it but seriously, it makes no difference lol. If you feel it there or he feels it there then kill it! There is so much (slight) variation on all his riffs.

  • @axeofcreation Yeah I wrote that comment just before you explained that there's the triplet on the less palm-muted part right after the one I meant and it started to make sense again.

You encourage me to PRACTICE guitar, didn't do that in years. Thanks

  • @JackCarver10 awesome!! Good luck, let me know if I can help.

  • WHERE'S THE TALK BOX?

  • @petecarvalho I don't have one. I thought I mentioned that in the video...

You can vaguely imitate one with an envelope filter and auto wah.

  • @axeofcreation awe, i didnt see the video for the lesson, just the cover, but sorry, that covers it!!

the cover is brilliant by the way!!

  • @petecarvalho Thanks!

  • You sir are a legend!

  • @xXEPICSXx92x Thank you!!

  • Awesome tutorial, I love the way you explained the more complicated chugging patterns.

  • @Mike010ekiM Much appreciated!!

  • what kind of pickups and effects do you use?

  • @steveo2440 In that guitar, the pickups are stock. Effects wise I don't use much. Hint of chorus/reverb/delay. Especially on the rhythm presets. When I kick in the lead sounds those effects are much more present.

  • I saw lot of people the A string on the first riff with their left and making a finger slip on it. What you think about this technic?

  • @IllusionaryMind8 I've seen people play it that way. For me personally I like pulling off (on the low string) and upstroking the A string. Bottom line is whichever is most comfortable for you and more importantly which ever way allows you to express the riff in the best sounding way.

  • Excellent video dude

  • @gonya33 Gracias!!

  • Im thinking of getting this same Agile in silverburst. It sounds really good in this video.

  • @HiFiKiller84 There pretty good guitar, especially for the price.

  • ADAM JONES IS A GENIUS!!! He's so awesome and you are too!! Subscribed.

  • @CaptainGalacticMusic Much appreciated!

  • AGILE!!!!!!! good cover

  • @killermind19 thank you

  • do u use a wah-wah pedal for the solo?

  • @Buckhummerable Sometimes. I'll either use a Wah or add on a Auto-Wah effect. I do this because I don't own a talk box.

  • @Buckhummerable you could use a sliide of glass.but u have to change the the B stringe in G

  • Hmm. I play this differently. I dont just pull off 3-0. I go 3-2-0 5-4-0 etc. But i could be wrong. Just my two cents lol

  • @OutsideTheWall94 When 10k days dropped and first began to learn that's what I thought he was doing as well. Try it with the pull offs (3-0) and see how it sounds.

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAH NO BEARD!!!

  • @49ers1013 hahahaha, to funny. Don't fret, it's back (in the newer videos)

  • Wow, I just started this video and I already noticed I've been playing this totally wrong. For the opening riff, I play by pulling off the 3rd fret to the second, and pull off again to open D. so like this: D---3p2p0-----5p3p0----2p1p0---10p9p0--- and so on. I'm saving and I subbed for more of these lessons, who knows how many of their songs I've got wrong lol >.>

  • @thakrazykid24 Well I'm glad that this video helped out!! Good luck!

  • It is really disheartening to learn that I've been playing all of my tool songs wrong :(

  • @TenaciousNacho I'm sure your not that off!! I hope this helps

  • this is, without doubt, the most comprehensive, helpful youtube lesson i've seen. thank a lot! and keep it up!

  • @metalmanky306 Thank you so much! I hope you find the other videos just as helpful.

  • oh wow excellent video \

  • @legon85 thank you

  • I'm a bassist myself, and I could never figure out the moving chug breakdown prior to the solo before this video. So thanks for that. Also you are an excellent teacher.

  • @blindwolf343 Thank you good sir!! That part is definitely tricky but once you can hear the pattern you can pick it up pretty quickly.

  • i would be so grateful if you would do something like this video for Tool's Vicarious.

  • @DJ330k That's probably the next one I'm going to do. A lot of people have asked for it plus it's really fun to play!

  • Good job. Great video. I didn't know you had it....hadn't been to your channel since the Adam Jone's "overall" video. Some good stuff here...

    J

  • @JosephMCorbett Thanks. Well stay tuned, more goodness on the way!

  • @axeofcreation Hey, just got a copy of Jambi up with the Talkbox! Check it out if you'd like. Of course there are some minor timing/transition issues, but overall I'm pretty happy with it :). Cheers.

    J

  • @JosephMCorbett diggin' the talk box! Good job, though it's kind of tough to distinguish you from the actual record playing.

  • great job, very well done, keep it up... i really do not get the nit-pickers being hyper-critical of your breakdown, i mean who cares if its not 100% of the way someone else does it + if they care so much they should post their own crappy video

  • @johnny0909000 Thank you!! Your words of wisdom are much appreciated. I hope they're heard!

  • Friggen awesome man. The song is a little too complex for me, but you broke it down and explained it extremely well. TYVM for this tutorial, keep em coming!

  • @XxUndeniedxX Thanks!! Let me know if I can help with anything

  • Comment removed

  • You're doing 3 on low D 0 then 0 On A but it's 3 on low D then 0 on A then 0 on low D

  • You don't pick an open A during the intro, you just drag your left hand to hit an A. You only strum the low D

  • @Buttnugglet You say tomAto, I say tomato. If slurring the open A works for you than rock it!

  • Can you do Vicarious next? I mean, it's not that difficult but the outro is very difficult

  • @TheDraconator Vicarious never seems to get the love it deserves. Great track! When you say "Outro" are you talking about the rolling triplet slurs at the end? They're pretty quick! Fun to play!

  • @axeofcreation well, I agree with you that it's a great track and yeah, those are the very triplets I'm talking about, I just cant catch it... I can't get it

  • Comment removed

  • Can you do Vicarious next? well again it's nto difficult but the ending is really difficult

  • Awesome lesson Man, that was very helpfull, please make The Grudge next.

  • @Marcian89 Thanks man! The Grudge is epic! It's so loooong haha. The ending is the hardest part. The rhythm on that outro riff can be tough to grasp

  • Dude, you rock! Is there a Pushit or Jimmy lesson comming soon? I can play bits and pieces of those songs, but I don't know W.T.F. Adam is doing on some parts. At any rate, keep the videos comming! There should be a special place reserved for you in heaven for offering these free tutorials, and I thank you.

  • @77TOOLarmy haha, thanks man! I've had a couple inquiries about Jimmy so I might do that one. Both Jimmy and Pushit are a couple of my fav all time Tool tracks.

  • maybe it's just me, but I don't hear any open A at the beginning of the original recording

  • @eccoboy I've seen people play a dead note instead of an open A but I like the way the open A sounds. Really resembles a (drum) triplet tom roll. I hear it when I play. Lines up right with a tom hit. Unless thats what I'm hearing. Either way I dig it. Theres always another way to play everything!

  • @justinmyt Can't stop, won't stop (does Chappelle shimmy) Thanks!!

  • Awesome work! Stop taking requests and just do instructionals for every Tool song. lol Seriously enjoyed this and I think ending the instructional with you playing to the song is brilliant. Great way to sum up the lesson.

  • @atomiicx Awesome! Thanks for the excellent feedback!

  • amazing/ simply amazing guitar teacher you are axe

  • @jomarqua Thank you very much!

  • I believe it does. It really emphasizes the speed of the song and rounds out the explanation of the different parts

  • Amazing!!! You might as well show all Tool songs, I highly doubt anyone will complain about it :D

  • @kalikube Thanks! At the rate the Tool requests keep rolling in I'm going to have to keep posting songs. Does having me play along with the track help? I didn't with the H. video, figured I try it out and see how people respond to seeing the song played.

  • @axeofcreation i like it when you play just on your own, simply because it can get a little muddy with all the rest of the band going along. But i think it depends, see what everyone else thinks :)

  • @09mcmahon I can totally understand that. That was my main concern with playing along. Though I felt with Jambi it was necessary since there are so many changing patterns and chugs

  • @axeofcreation I totally agree, and i forgot to mention that it can help if you have the rest of the track playing to show where certain riffs meet up with a bass line or a certain drum section, as tool seem to like their synchronicity! hahaha
