can anyone help me find an egg timer?? i checked my dollar store, bed bath n beyond, target, and smart n final! i feel like it shouldn't be this difficult, and the ones i'm finding online are like $7. im going to try this with my android powered phone and see if it works as well!
For slower panning, a battery-powered clock motor works fine. I added a ball-bearing to the hour shaft for smoother panning. Look for Youtube user GeezerRay for an example.
great idea. just made mine from a stainless steel egg timer and dense rubber inserts for a snug fit. i had to drill and tap the bottom for a 1/4 -20 nut to accept the tripod mount. i much prefer using this setup for time lapse's instead of my mechanical shutter camera as there is much wear and tear on it (canon using chdk software) thanks for the video of this idea.
How did you realise that the bottom of an egg timer perfectly screws into a tripod thread? What would be the purpose of having a threaded hole in the bottom of an egg timer in the first place do you think?
I can't believe how well this works thanks for sharing.
my 3G iphone is version 3.0 and it does not work wiith any of the time-lapse photography apps I've tested it with.. it's too much trouble to upgrade, so if anyone knows what app would work for me? thanks a bunch!
Very MacGyver. I made one but couldn't find an egg timer so used a pear instead. Just did a quick test in the house and see that I didn't get the smooth pan like you did with the egg. Damn pear doesn't make a smooth rotation but rather moves every few seconds. I'm guessing the egg moves continually thus giving you the smooth results. Where did you get the egg? Heading to the U.S so I'll probably have better luck finding one there. Thanks again for this great idea!
@BadCop - Yes the Egg does move smoothly just like a clock would. I picked up the egg from a Dollar Store. I have the app set to take pictures every 2 seconds @ 15fps for the demo. I have also used 30fps for a quicker but still smooth rotation.
The egg timer that I am using ticks like a clock when set for panning. Try searching Surplus Stores too, I've seen them there as well.

One suggestion: Configure it so it can pan left to right.
onsitestudios 1 year ago
Pan to the right right, not left. Make that change for your next one and you'll go off the hook.

Good idea . I'm going to make 1.

How did you make the cut in the top of the egg?
BadCop 2 years ago
@BadCop I used a cheap box cutter knife.
I heated the knife with the stove element and it cut through like butter. I also purchased the knife from dollar store.
Cheers!
