Good vid, but I was wondering why the americans only bandage their back legs when a lot of the horse's weight goes onto the forehand when they turn for home and are pushed faster. In England, flat racers don't wear bandages but the steeplechasers will occassionally wear brushing boots on their front legs

My heart just sank when I saw her fall. Same for Barbaro who was argued to be a better turf horse than he was a dirt horse, but yet he won the KD by the largest margin since Assualt in1946.
Barbaro's death when he got sick almost made me cry. I remember I had just watched the race. I went in my backyard right after. When I came back, I saw the guy talking. My dad then told me that she had misstepped and they put her to sleep. But not the sleep you wake up from. I almost cried when I heard that.

No @ 72 Peta Needs to do research on the horse(s) before assuming things. Like with Charitable Man in the 09 Belmont. They assumed he was forced to run, they could have checked to see if he had any starting gate problems etc..

These horses are broke to ride at about 18 months of age. in order for them to start in 2YO races. Their knees are'nt closed yet. For the most part..I blame the owners..they are the ones pushing the trainers to race them. The trainer may suggest holding off until the horse matures a little bit more, but the final decision is usually left to the owner. They have a fortune invested and to them the horse is an asset or liability which ever the case may be.
Ya know.. it makes me wander why so many horses break down when their young. I heard that when horses are young and not old enough to carry weight...that if some one rides them and they break a bone...it could kill them. I may not be right...but all these horse tradjedys make me wander.
A good trainer can tell if a young horse is mature enough to train let alone race as a 2YO. 'Alleged' for instance didn't race until his trainer judged his bone structure was mature enough even though he could have entered multiple youngsters races and won. So basically racing a young horse is simply a combination of crap training and/or greed on the part of the owner/s. Short term gain and long term loss {for the horse certainly}.
what i don't think most ppl realize is that horses rest 60% of there weight on there front legs. it would be very easy for a horse to break it's leg with a bad step and to break both front that's horrible. we will miss u eight belles u will be forever loved. R.I.P.

There are alot of people involved in this sport who don't care ... but multiply that number by a 1000 and you get the number of people who do care. Both the trainer and owners have decided to retire after this year. They love their horses so incredibly much ... and were shot through the heart last year and have decided to no longer pursue racing and instead enjoy the lives of the horses they still have
The horses have to be 3yo to run The Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont. That is the only year they can run.
They are actually making changes in the industry for the safety of the horses. I believe that most people in the business care deeply for their horses, but of course, the media (and most people) just want to hear about the ones that are out to make the dollar.
If anything needs to be changed, it is the closing of the slaughter houses that kill more race horses than racing does....
I agree, I think she would have had an absolutely gorgeous baby. She tried so hard it is so sad to see her have to die that way when she still had so much to live for. I have a horse, and have seen horses with a crack in their feet. If they caught it in time he may be alright. It sounds like they have it under control and have the best farrier. My friends horse had a quarter crack and they dug it out and put a silicon patch on it and he was ok. He is a show horse. Also, i don't think polo wraps would have done anything for eight bells. It's material, it's not gonna hold her leg together.
I agree. The most humane thing to do was to put her down immediately. Barbaro may have had 3 healthy legs. But he should have been put down, when he started having set backs.
barbaro should not have been put down he was a fighter and never gave up the only reason he was put down is because all his hoves were cracking and he wasn't healing fast

And still the attention is on Big Brown when he pulls up last in the Belmont. I was like "Okay, so where's Da'Tara? Ya know? The one that just trumped Big Brown? The longshot that won wire to wire? Ya...that one there."
In case you haven't seen the papers....Big Brown has had leg problems in the past. At the present he has a crack in his left front hoof, and IMHOP sould be scratched. But they insist on running him, so I look for another breakdown.

A horse with two broken legs could never live. The horse would never be able to even stand. It's not like with humans where we go to the hospital and put a cast on it and it heals. How could that let a horse live in so much pain she couldn't even stand?
Thanks for the awesome video of the Sweet, sweet filly, Eight Belles! She ran her heart out to beat the gents. In my heart I actually retired Rags to Riches before the owners announced it. PEOPLE WILL SEE! It took a major event like the Derby with Millions watching, "Hear the Bells of sweet Belle they toll for all 'TO GET IT!'"

i am not tryin to be mean i am sorry if it came of like that but horses dont have ankles they are called fetlocks and if horses had ankles like people they would break cuz fetlocks only go forwards and backwards but ankles go all the way around so if they had ankles they would not support their 1000 pounds+, and yes i have been riding and hanging around horses for 14 yrs or since i was 3 and i do know a little about them aka i am an b in ponyclub. So reasearch if u want to fight about horses!!!!

I have a horse, and have seen horses with a crack in their feet. If they caught it in time he may be alright. It sounds like they have it under control and have the best farrier. My friends horse had a quarter crack and they dug it out and put a silicon patch on it and he was ok. He is a show horse. Also, i don't think polo wraps would have done anything for eight bells. It's material, it's not gonna hold her leg together.

I agree. The most humane thing to do was to put her down immediately. Barbaro may have had 3 healthy legs. But he should have been put down, when he started having set backs.

barbaro should not have been put down he was a fighter and never gave up the only reason he was put down is because all his hoves were cracking and he wasn't healing fast

In case you haven't seen the papers....Big Brown has had leg problems in the past. At the present he has a crack in his left front hoof, and IMHOP sould be scratched. But they insist on running him, so I look for another breakdown.

They spent $500 per hoof to have a special shoe made so his hoof problems, wouldn't be a problem. He was sound, so they ran him.

A horse with two broken legs could never live. The horse would never be able to even stand. It's not like with humans where we go to the hospital and put a cast on it and it heals. How could that let a horse live in so much pain she couldn't even stand?

Thanks for the awesome video of the Sweet, sweet filly, Eight Belles! She ran her heart out to beat the gents. In my heart I actually retired Rags to Riches before the owners announced it. PEOPLE WILL SEE! It took a major event like the Derby with Millions watching, "Hear the Bells of sweet Belle they toll for all 'TO GET IT!'"

Actually the vet's report was she tripped and caught her ankles under her, the weight of her chest snapped them. Look it up on thoroughbredsdotcom.
