  • Love this song! Man was he young and skinny!

  • MF....still swingin' up there in Jazz Heaven!

  • maynard ferguson: the worst trumpet player to ever receive payment for a gig

  • @tpstrat14 I don't know what bad shit you are smoking to make a comment like that.....Oh well...different strokes for...yata yata yata.

  • @frowe327 for real. he's horrible. He sounds like a goddam mouse...

  • That is Pete King on alto; after MF !

  • GREAT stuff - I always liked those MF horn recordings the best. Does anybody know who is in the trumpet section? I don't recognise the faces ( I can't see Derek Watkins) but I know Alan Downey was Maynard's lead player for a long time.

  • Ray Cooper on the Bongos, he the guy you see bald guy with the Mr. Magoo glasses with Elton Johns band and a lot of the English bands etc.

  • C'mon what a badass!!! Can you feel the bands power? R.I.P. MAYNARD

  • The description says Maynard took a solo on the valve bone - this is incorrect - that's a Superbone. (They are very different instruments, although they look similar at first glance)

  • @amsivertson Maynard made the Superbone with Holton after he got the MF Horn, and was made in the 70's, after he came back from the UK, but they do look similar it's true

  • @TheTheTrumpeter thank you i didnt know wat the hell that was, as a young trumpet player

  • Great Band ! Geat Leader ! Thanx Maynard !

  • Holy, bajoly! Very tasty. Thanks for sharing!

  • man. I dont know where he got that energy but man he could play.

  • This guy was just magic. really amazing.

  • WOW! This is the first LIVE version I have ever heard of El Dopa! Even though it is a shortened version of the album version, it is GREAT! I saw Maynard at least 5 times in the 70's when I was a young high school jazz ensemble trumpet player from a small town in Ohio.. He was my idol then. Maynard, Woody Shaw and Freddy Hubbard. I listened to them all for hours. God bless them all.The Jazz world has lost great icons. I do miss them. Thank you for posting this video. You have touched my heart.

  • is Lynn Nicholson the dark haired trumpet in the back??

  • @itwontcomeout5678 No, this was 1970 and Maynard's British band that put out MF Horn 1, 2 and 3. This is a little too early for LN.

  • @itwontcomeout5678 no, also the lead tpt is Alan downey who wrote Give it one.

  • This is one the best Maynard charts ever. Awesome arrangement and performances. The vintage videos are the best. I have been listening to L-Dopa since grade school, but to finally see an original performance is really cool....*^%$ .....Maynard sure resembles Mike Myer's AUSTIN POWERS character from the mid-90s here in the video! The dancing, smile, clothes, hair, etc...Could it be a young Mike Myers spotted Maynard on Canadian BBC in the early 70's and used this image to create his character???

  • The alto player is Pete King

  • Awesome album, every tune great. This had to be one of the best bands MF put together. RIP MF, your energy and music are still on the planet and smokin'!

  • If the hairs on the back of my neck had hairs, they'd be standing up. Simply awesome.

  • I love the way they recorded this band in the UK back then. The reverb, booming bass, clearly defined voices.

Fantastic sidemen too of course. The drummer, Randy Jones, was still touring with Dave Brubeck the last time I looked.

  • No...this is the British band...I know Pete King played alto with this band, but that doesn't look like him....this is before Andy Macintosh....It's definitely NOT Ronnie Cuber though....

  • @MrKhedger def Pete King

  • Este es un dels meus favorits!!

  • If I was soloing and someone was dancing around like Jerry Lewis beside me, you would have to pick me up off the floor. Good stuff

  • Maynard was the BEST. Not only in his playing but that he shared the spotlight with the band and always played for the audience's enjoyment. Thanks for sharing this video, it's a treasure.

  • darn, i know i've heard that quote at 1:24 somewhere before, but I can't remember where. Sounds Parker-ish.

  • thank you so much for sharing this.. an energetic live version of a Maynard classic .. seems like everyone had fun, even Maynard! .. as they say in the business, it cooked man! ..

  • Thanks for uploading this. It was my intro to Maynard and I am truly grateful.

  • Maynard is the MAN. I used to sit and play along for endless hours. SCREAM baby SCREAM.

  • I saw this version of Maynard's band on Boston Common at what was called Sunset Series. They were all wearing these funky afghan vests. He was opening for Weather Report but we left after Maynard's band because we didn't want to forget what we heard.

  • I must have visited this months ago and forgot to favorite this. I'm glad I found it again. This is probably my favorite MF clip on youtube.

  • Poor Righteous Teachers sampled this well on "Shakiyla." I worked at Sony Music for a while and MF Horn hadn't even been released on CD. I had to have my vinyl copy transferred to CD to have this song. Worth it.

  • WOW I MISS THE "BOSS"

  • Awesome!!! Maynard really loved to play. He always took risks with his music too. I went to several of his concerts over the years and every one was a blast. Thanks a lot for sharing.

  • The best Maynard Ferguson I've ever seen. Who was that guy playing in the beginning and at the end? Had no rhythm, no beat to his body, but could play his ass off. Maynard could dance!!!!!! I never knew he had such rhythm from listening to him. He was the bomb.

  • Believe it was Danny Moss...a monster!! TOO MANY great players in this british-based band....

  • Fantastic job on one of the best tunes he or anyone ever recorded and an ever better solo by Maynard than on the MF Horn album. 5 starts by everyone. Amazing energy, and Maynard looks so thrilled after his solo! He should be. It was great.

  • do you feel that?

that is the power of MAYNARD, baby.

    In-friggen-credible performance

    thank you :)

  • @econoroller The power of Maynard! I couldn't say it any better. There will never be another Maynard.

  • Intense stuff! Missed this tune. My old cassette had worn out and demagnetized (and eventually lost during multiple moves.) I LOVE THIS SH*T!

  • Skinny Maynard? Amazing

  • Shut up dude, he gained weight in the late 70's so what, he probably didn't excersize that often because he was to busy GIGGING, and playing his horn, its not like he was always overweight, who cares anyway, he is awsome

  • Sounds like the same sax players as on the album.

  • alto alto pete king (big boss)

  • Comment removed

  • O at about 550 he screams a double E

  • I've been a fan of Maynards (and his bands) since I was ten, which would coincide with the time of this recording. I don't know what it was about the British bands, but the albums he made with them seem to be a little bit better. Not sure if it's the charts, arrangements, age of band members or what, but there seems to be more controlled energy in the British bands. MF Horn and Alive and Well In London ("Maynard Ferguson" album here in the States) are amazing pieces of work

  • Lol, i think that is just a myth that he would drop derek watkins for playing higher because they probably have about the same range and also lin biviano can play higher than maynard that doesn't mean he is better

  • actually, I take that back, in recent discovery i have discovered that maynard ferguson could play up to triple c's he just never did that often in performances.

  • una vez mas te felicito boricua jazz excelentes joyas , cuidate mucho haber si te animas a visitar el klan del sabor . exitos

  • who's playing lead?

  • Derek Watkins (legend has it that MF dropped him out of the band for playing higher than him!)

  • You know sleepy night records has the whole show on DVD. Ernie Garside has a whole treasure trove of MF audoi and video.

  • Wow, what a hoot. If you wonder if you are blowing well on a trumpet, have the good air, etc. try playing a trombone once in a while. You have to really blow to get a sound, then go back to the trumpet and you can unravel it.

  • hell yaaaa superboneeee

  • The bass player is Dave Lynane,Pete Jackson on piano & Randy Jones on drums, all brilliant players. Bill Geldeard.

  • TOTALLY agree with you!!!! I've seen the US bands from the early 70's on,BUT I would have KILLED to see these brits play in public.....

    "Live Music Is Best"........

  • In answer to one question I think that's Pete King on alto. Jon Stone

  • The cadenza (5:28) on this tune always kills me! Thanks for this great video!

  • Wow! Great video! What energy! Is that Ronnie Cuber on alto?

  • I think so...

  • I believe it to be Pete King on alto. And what amazing bass playing!. Jon Stone

  • @playbari Pete King is the alto player

  • @playbari it is Peter King

  • Bitching! I miss Maynard. He was the best.

  • Me too.

  • That full band solo actually did make the room start changing colors like that in real life, too. It's no video effect. I can't get enough of this song. Every member of Maynard's band was a monster at this point.

  • You are so right...

  • Do you mean that the lights were like that in person? They were playing like crazy there!!!

  • THIS is hard to find. I have been looking for this song for soo long. Thanks. Danny Moss is a BEAST on this tune and now I know his name. I mean he must have some sort of crazy computer chip in his brain to come up with the licks he does and I spent my youth trying to play like what I heard him do on this song.

  • I'm glad you liked the video.

  • Damn! Where do you get so many wonderful classics!?! Thanks for sharing.

  • Everything on my channel I've recorded myself throughout the years. Alot of memories and hard work. I'm glad you and others like you enjoy my videos, come back soon. More videos to come in the near future. -bye-

  • Great video! Thanks for posting it. :)

  • Thank you...

  • it's sad Danny passed away

  • Yes it is.

  • Danny Moss sadly passed away last week. May he rest in peace and forever blow that wonderful tenor horn in Heaven...

  • Thanks for the info...

  • wow this is just sick!

  • The "Boss", Mr. Maynard Ferguson may he RIP.

  • This is MF's British band. Peter King on alto, Danny Moss on Tenor and Alan Downey (wrote 'Give It One') on lead tpt.

  • Thanks for the comment...

  • Sorry bori. My comment was a little 'cold' shall we say. This chart is from my favourite album MF Horn 1. This has special significance because I did a gig with Alan Downey a few months before he died, which in turn was a few months before MF died. He told me many stories about MF. All of them good. Apart from being a great musician it seems he was the ultimate human being. MF RIP. BTW do you have a live performance of Eli's comin?

  • No problem amigo, Would you like to share a story or two about MF? Is it true that MF was jealous of Alan Downey and other trumpet players in his band? Or is this horse shit.

Thanks in advance... Jazz Eliot from Puerto Rico.

  • Horse shit I think. I never came across anyone who had a bad word to say about MF - and by anyone I mean the brits that played for him that were still around for me to ask - Alan, Pete King and John Huckeridge. (Alan sadly died just before MF). John said they were great days.

  • Thanks for the comment...

  • Thanks for this, please post more

  • I will try...

  • Wow...thanks for this...fantastic....loving the solo's

  • Thank you for stopping at my channel. Please come again...

  • Great arrangement and performance. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hello, and thanks again for stopping by...

  • He just made music so exciting. Pretty wicked dancer too. I said the same of the other clip of this - it is the best MF clip on YouTube if not anywhere that I've seen. RIP MF

  • Thank you so much for your kind words, every video clip on my channel is from my private collection. There is no copy/paste here... I have thousands of video clips, yes thousands, but I have to be careful with the copyrights so youtube won't suspend my account again... Last time I had some problems with all my Chet Baker clips there's this guy that keeps emailing youtube because of the copyrights, damn rat! Anyway thanks again my friend, come back soon, -chao-Mr. Jazz Elliot from Puerto Rico.
