a depth charge doesn't actually need to hit a sub to sink or damage it. If it goes off close enough, the shock wave could crack the pressure hull or cause other major damage.

you could have a charge with a battery detonator. having the contacts on material that will flex under pressure after a certain depth the contacts short and detonate the charge i imagine you could do it with a M80 and some stuff from a rocket kit but making it water tight would need to be some sort of home made stuff.

@emel60 Pure speculation, but if you look at it, the depth charge is leaking air, probably from the fuse. When it went in, no air was trapped inside it, so it sank. But, then the air from the fuse got caught up inside the charge, and it became bouyant, thus it went back up.

I am trying to make a RC boat with light bar and siren (Police Boat) does anyone know how to do the wireless control that changes patterns for the light bar and siren tones?

@tank12war I would get a few really cheep servos and tap into the motor's power and ground. That should give you +5v 0v and -5v. Then ether build a circuit or use a micro controller for the lights. The µCntrlr. could cycle through patterns, moving to the next each time the stick/button is pushed on the transmitter. This setup would of course require at least one extra RC channel, but you really only need two for the boat. If you make your own wireless system things start to get really complex.

A dept charge does not detect subs, they simply are set detonate at a certain depth than dropped into the water. When they reach the set pressure the barometer switch clicks over and detonates the charge. As for these RC ship charges my bet would be there simply water proof fuses, cut to diffrent burn times.

The main element that "explodes" is most likely an alkali metal such as potassium or sodium since they are generally more readily available. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say those "depth charges" are small bits of frankium or cesium. A chemical reaction occurs between these elements and water when combined, produces an explosion. The reaction is largely dependent on the size of cesium or frankium, the smaller the piece the sooner it "pops".

@sweettooth80 RC Submarines kits are nothing but toys how come U guys don't use real torpedoes with plastic explosives. It would be nice have a destroyer with real depth charges. Also how bout real cannon for the battle ships, Christ this is boring and I am sure you have engineers and get the permits to make it real. Instead just a toy in a swimming pool or large pond. If U want real fun U need real action + not airsoft. Heck we use M-80's for Depth Charges + 38 special ammo for cannons.

The Depth Charges will be easy and were think of making a tournament with a large entry fee with a grand-prize considering classes + your shipped gets destroyed.
