  • I will be in your debt if you could explain to me how i can achieve any of the following when preparing blu-ray in compressor 4: encode 5.1 LPCM uncompressed 24/96; encode 5.1 losslessly at 24/96 with DD true HDD or DTS codec; encode 5.1 using DD better than 640kbps (which is all i can seem to get) such as the "Dolby Digital +" that on BD is meant to bring to 1.7 Mbps & possible also access to 96 but i doubt it. Any advice much appreciated & if none of these ok in compressor is there alt? thx!

  • @jkcfx I'll have a look but I can't find an option for Dolby higher than 640 nor is there a preset for Dolby Digital Plus. I'll have a look at DVD Studio Pro too... I'll get back to you...

  • @jkcfx I also have Sorenson Squeeze. Sorenson does have the Dolby Digital Plus setting but it also max at 640 and a 32 Sample size limit. VC-1 supports a higher data rate than 640 but only supports stereo. I would not recommend encoding VC-1 anyway. I understand what you are looking for. The specification for Dolby Digital Plus are promising but I believe the only software licensed to encode at that level is Dolby's own Media Producer Suite which comes at an enterprise level price...

  • @steevepatrick i think the DD+ on BD has a basic 640 stream built in plus additional parity data bringing quality level up where supported but only to 2mbps or so. thanks

  • @jkcfx As for Linear PCM. Select AIFF 5.1 (whichever configuration you captured or edited with) Rate 96.000 and 24 bits sample size are available. You can select best quality at which point there will be no change from your source material. Are you creating the surround in Compressor or are you importing an existing file from the final video? Do you create your Blu-Ray in Compressor?

  • @steevepatrick superb! - thanks so much for all your help. i tend to export from fcpx to ProResHQ which has the 5.1 LPCM in it. Compressor then offers DD by default. I cannot export from fcpx into compressor direct x so flipping glitchy on my system. until i got 16GB ram it was crashing constantly with projects not much more than an hour long on the latest 17MBP. LPCM on BD isn't aiff so missed it but it says 5.1 LPCM in the spec so fingers crossed. All channel arrangements okay? Thanks again

  • @steevepatrick & just one more thing - you able to show how to put in project chapter marks etc please?! any alternatives to compressor that allow mastering BDs better but haven't been dropped by apple?! thanks

  • @jkcfx DVD Studio Pro is still available but directly from Apple and only by buying Final Cut Pro Suite. The ones I know cost a fortune and don't do much more than FCPX. Adobe Encore is limited and although Adobe has resurrected the mighty Macromedia Director, no Blu-Ray features have been added. I do it all in DVD Studio Pro still. I'm curious as to why you want to create a Blu-Ray in true HD / Dolby+ as it isn't supported by the average equipment nor would many notice the difference.

  • @steevepatrick i intend to be very wealthy and own amplifiers and speakers costing hundreds of thousands and i will definitely here the difference then! agree that my clients may not appreciate it immediately or ever or understand any tangible difference (and your tip is helpful for me also in stick LPCM on DVD) - always deliver in both DVD and BD. Lossless compression is sweet though but latest project 1hr08mins and used 3/5 of BD at max video data rate & DD640 so LPCM fine in this case. thx

  • @jkcfx (continued) not that it should stop you and it doesn't answer your question but the state of the media industry is still in flux. My clients are still requesting DVD and YouTube is as popular as ever. Dolby Digital Plus is also not widely compatible with all equipment not only because it requires HDMI 1.3 but also because it can't be transmitted through any other means as S-PDIF doesn't support it. Perhaps all I'm saying is that the format has not been adopted by the mainstream yet.

  • @steevepatrick DD+ on BD is always compatible in its low def 640 rate i think but it is the master audio or whichhaveyous that are lossless. thanks again for the videos and grateful for you enthusiastic help in this matter.

  • I don't have Compressor but thought I'd check out the video anyway. Your new style of filming I think is unique and gives it something extra! (just thought you may like some feedback).

  • @Convertape Cheers! There's a lot more to Compressor and a few more tutorials will follow. I decided to put myself in it to put my rambling into context. It's more entertaining to watch me make a fool of myself than listening to my babbling over screen captures.
