Played this just now for my 3 yr old kitten who was walking on 'puter keyboard. Thanks, I remember hearing of this in high school -- not quite as far back as the gold rush.
Tell mike to check out the Youtube channel of gramophoneshane, he has posted a video of one of the recordings the composer (Confrey) made of this tune in 1921. No better source than the composer himself!
Struggling quite a bit but I understand that. It's a hard ass piece to get it up to speed. It will wear you out. Especially that last part with the run all the way down the keyboard. Good job. Keep working at it.
O.K. Now that I've heard all the various interpretations of "Kitten on the Keys" on Youtube , I have to say this is my favorite. I love the rowdy, rollicking sense of fun it has...baby boy lays it out exactly how, where and on WHAT it should be played.
I think I need to make a little visit to the sheet music store.
Its amazing what you can get out of an old piano or piano shape!!!....This is a heck of a difficult piece to play and try to be heard!! You are a Hero.......
I'll tell you what, that is a difficult piece. And to play it on a "dog" of a piano, speaks volumes for the musician. Trust me, I've played on some "dogs"... Adam
"Kitten on the Keys", composed by Zez Confrey in 1921. Inspired when his grandmother's cat ran across her piano. So yes, quite literally sounds like a cat running ontop of a piano. A great piece of music. Any info on the piano?
Incredible example of "stride piano"!

@YaDenmark As a matter of fact there are....by Sam Coslow
.Verse A-1: (A Section) There's a catchy melody that's spreadin' all around the country,
And they call it "Kitten on the Keys,"
Ev'ryone's buying it, Ev'ryone's trying its brand new harmonies.
You can close your eyes and just imagine there's a little kitten
Running up and down the ivories,
Anyone listenin' can't help a-whistlin' Kitten on the Keys.
There's more but I can't post it all...a search should uncover them.

No info on the piano - it was just a piece of furniture that went with the theme of the home. Very much a PSO (piano-shaped object)

@gretalegs depending upon the year and maker, this piano could be fully restored to look, play, and sound like a new piano.
There are several people in the U.S. who can do this, but Piano World in Illinois and Robert's Musical Restorations in Florida are two of the best.
