Say what you will about the job he did with leading the country, Carter was one of the few and one of the last "common man" Presidents. A very moral person, and as President, kept the United States an overall peaceful place to live in the late 1970's.
And secured the Camp David agreement that is honored by both parts even today, and he advocated human rights like no other president! Carter did much good, and was a good president!
Yeah, certainly more of a common man than Regan (movie star) or either Bushes (old money). Nixon had quite modest upbringings too. But at the same time, these people all became President of the United States. There's nothing common about that achievement.
From his opening remarks, you can decipher that this was the 1978 State of the Union; January 19th, 1978. Why does he always open his speeches with his personal politcial anniversaries that people could care less abotu? THe 2nd anniversary of the Iowa caucuses, the 3rd anniversary of the Dem convention in his 1979 Malaise speech... stupid.
Being liberal isn`t a problem anymore. Obama was the most liberal U.S. Senator and was elected president with 53% of the votes. People has finally realised that liberlism is good! Thank god, conservatism has failed. It`s been proven wrong! Look at the last 8 dark hard years of conservative hell-It`s over, thank you Jesus!
You must be feeling god today after Scott Brown, a conservative, won the Senate seat in Massachusetts w/ 52% of the vote! Oh, and by the way, isn't it funny that Americans identify as more Conservative (40%) than moderate (36%) or Liberal (22%)?
I thought the american people had learned a lesson about how useless the republican party were after 8 years of hell with Bush, but apperantly they haven`t. And on the election in Massachusetts-Shame on you. You`re pissing on Ted Kennedys memory. Healthcare was his vision, and now you assholes in Massachusetts has ruined it. Fuck you Massachusetts!! May you burn in hell for that!
Yes 40% of Americans may classify themselves as conservative, but 30% of those conservatives voted for Obama. This is not a staunchly conservative country. It is moderate. Scott Brown won, but he is going to disappoint social conservatives because he has progressive views and will vote with the Democrats and Obama about 40% of the time because he is from liberal/independent Massachusetts. He isn't a conservative, he is a moderate.
Well, it's a Moderately Conservative Nation. Vast majorities still support Balanced Budgets, term limits, strong National Security, drilling offshoer, limited government, etc. And a solid majority opposes Same-Sex Marriage, while 51% oppose abortion on demand. And a great number (like upwards of 60%) support school prayer and do not believe in Evolution.
20 years from now it won because this country will become more diverse culturally and less and less religious. I'm not saying that is a good or bad thing, but it is the truth. People want balanced budgets, but raising taxes involves that. It is strange that I saw a poll that showed that 65% of Americans supports openly gay people to serve in the military. It surprised me when it showed that 58% of Republicans support that.
@Enslaved10 People has not realised (WTF) any such thing! Obama won cause he campaigned more conservative than McCain. It's what Liberals always do. Whatever it takes to acheive the goal in front of you, then reveal the truth when it's too late to reverse the decision. They act conservative on the campaign trail, and then govern from the left. America is turning away from liberalism.
No way. Mondale never had a chance, running against a popular incumbent with an improving economy. Besides that, he was too liberal, and never could disassociate himself from Carter's failed legacy.
Funny thing was that he outperformed Reagan throughout most of the debates, but he made a mistake by being too honest about his intention to raise taxes.
@sean2015 That was something about those debates that really surprised me, when you see retrospectives of those debates you see the clips of Reagan displaying his overwhelming personality and charm with a quick quip about age or some other joke, but if you watch the debates in full I was amazed at how well Walter Mondale actually did against Reagan. Mondale held his own extremely well and challenged Reagan with well thought out points, but it didn't matter. Reagan was way too popular.
@gothatway09 Mondale was also too much of a policy wonk, I suppose people saw him as very boring and technical, but give him credit for beating out Gary Hart for the nomination (Hart was much more popular and was initially ahead of Mondale in the polls). Also Reagan was very nonspecific about his plans to balance the budget and trim the deficit, Mondale was blunt and honest by announcing that he planned to raise taxes. That didn't sit too well with voters.
WTF are you taliking about? Mondale lost 49 states and barely won Minnesota (by less than 1%). He was the Vice President of a failed President (Carter). When Reagan took office in 1981, the economy was in shambles (21% interest rates, 15% inflation, 10% unemployment). By 1984 under Reagan's budget unemployment was down to 5%, inflation down to 4% and interest rates down to 7%. Why would the people want to even consider putting a Carter man back in the White House?
What about the deficit when Reagan left??? What about Iran/Contras and rising crime and poverty rates. What about ignoring the aids epedemic? Reagan was a failure! He wasn`t close to being a great president. And what`s interesting about Carter is that his legacy has improved since he left office. In a recent poll 64% of the american people said he was a good president. No historian rank him among the worst presidents, only die hard republicans who NEVER voted for him in the first place.
Wow America was so white then, the good old days...hehehehe!!!

A total disaster. With him the Western world in grave danger. Nicaragua, Iran, El Salvador ... a great danger. And in economic ruin.
Thank God we beat Reagan.
Reagan saved the economy, created jobs, raised the U.S. and won World War III without firing a shot.
Carter handsome. But lousy president.
REAGAN THE BEST OF ALL NO DOUBT.

Reagan had nothing to do with the Cold War ending. The Soviet Union collapsed on itself because the Soviet political culture was not sustainable.

I didn't say i wouldn't. However, I can see how Obama would be a common man in some respects. Spot on, mate.

Overall, Not a great president, but I like him. Morally speaking, he was probably one of our best presidents.

Mondale was not weak. He was just too liberal and honest for the American people at that time in history.
And this is coming from a moderate.
